Cool technical resource for artists

Cool technical resource for artists 09/22/2004 10:22 AM

David Pescovitz: Audrey-Samsara-stillEarlier this year, I posted the story of Amy Jenkins, a video artist who had been invited by the Salvatore Ferragamo company to create an artwork inspired by their 5th Avenue store. The store deemed Jenkins's completed artwork "distasteful" and refused to display it because it showed her baby daughter breastfeeding. Amy wanted to show the video somewhere else but it was made for a widescreen display that she couldn't afford to buy. Today though, I received the following email from David Gilman, a Brooklyn-based production manager with experience in sound and video engineering:

"I wanted to let you know that thanks to that post, Amy now has my 60" plasma screen in her studio. And in October, I'll be bringing it up to Boston so she can show her piece at a gallery there.

So, Go Internet!

I also wanted to point you towards Art Answers, a website I started after my initial meeting with Amy. While I can't lend every artist in the world my equipment, I can try to help them get the information they need. My dream is that one day Art Answers will have a storefront with reference libraries, on-staff experts, and a tool lending library. In the meantime, people can email or call with their art creation questions, and I'll try to get them answers."
Go David! Link

What's a namber? A namber is a word that acts as a mnemonic for a number. For example, 65 is drum, and 181 is push. A namber address uses an arbitrarily-chosen list of nambers to represent each of the numbers from 0 to 255 in order to assemble four words to represent any IP address. Metafilter.com's namber is earth .frog.brown.tooth, and mysteryrobot.com conveniently provides translation and forwarding to the real IP address.

skyeearMy latest article for TheFeature.com is now online. It's about art that incorporates, and sometimes critiques, mobile technology:
"Research laboratories are the avant-garde art galleries of the 21st century. That shouldn't come as a surprise though. Art is a lens through which engineers can raise tough questions about the science fictions that they create, and we inhabit."

Cuban artists

Cuban artists 01/07/2004 04:27 PM

One of our friends has a young Cuban lover and she goes to visit him there periodically.  This situation spurred some reflection:  "Why are there so many artists and musicians in Cuba?"The next thought "Well, why not?"In the U.S. when Johnny decides to ignore his family's advice and take up oil painting or guitar playing instead of investment banking it is a big crisis.Johnny is very likely giving up the opportunity to own real estate, send his kids to private school, and otherwise enjoy the great festival of materialism that is the United States.  In an economy with hardly any opportunity, however, why wouldn't a person choose to do art or music?

Art doesn't require a lot of capital investment.  You really just need a crayon and some paper (or scissors and paper if you were Matisse).  If human ability is equally distributed across the globe you'd therefore expect the best art to come from the poorest countries where people have no competing bourgeois job offers.  Yet paradoxically the art for which people are willing to pay the most money seems to come from advanced economies such as Germany, England, Japan, and the U.S.

For the comment section:  Why?

[I'll start by throwing out a personal opinion:  art can only touch you if the artist shares a similar social and economic environment, which is why Westerners mostly like the art that is produced in Western countries; art produced in poor countries is actually much better but we can't appreciate it because, despite heavy doses of ecotourism, we can't understand the milieu in which it was produced.]

Fant astical paintings from Chinese artist Fang He. I think I like Subway Underpass Bird best for its vague sense of creepiness, though Chinese Pavilion No. 1 appeals to my love of old time sci-fi illustrations. Check out similarly whimsical Zhang Gong's cute p hallic creatures (NSFW), or peruse the large collection of artists at Courtyard-Gallery. (Related Chinese art posts here and here.)

Iraqi artists express outrage over Abu
Ghraib
06/15/2004 04:30 PM
Interesting article in the Christian Science Monitor about a visual response by 25 artists in Baghdad to the torture of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. At left, a sculpture by Abdel-Karim Khalil depicting a hooded detainee. Snip from CSM story:
[Iraqi Union of Artists deputy chairman Qasim Alsabti] created a life-size figure of a woman wrapped in a bloodstained white shroud. It symbolizes the rape of women detainees in Abu Ghraib, says Alsabti, who heard of allegations of women prisoners being raped at Abu Ghraib five months before the scandal broke. "There was a letter circulating in Fallujah from a woman inside Abu Ghraib," he says. "She was begging the resistance to bomb Abu Ghraib and bring down the walls on their heads so that their suffering would end. I felt like screaming when I heard this. I wanted to draw the attention of the American people."

[F]or many Iraqis, including artists like Alsabti, Abu Ghraib has become synonymous with what they see as the injustices of the occupation. "It's like an adviser from Saddam Hussei's regime has come back to Iraq and is now advising the Americans," he says.

Forget guitars, basses and drums. Ignore singers, rappers and deejays. As we enter 2005, and cast our eyes back at 2004, it seems like the real revolution in music hasn't come from a musician, but from a piece of technology. Namely: the almighty iPod. By Jim Farber, New York Daily News

We've got to put them up for sale on the Internet -- they're being traded free every day on the Web and we're all losing money.

The Irish Recording Music Association, whose members pay no taxes on their earnings, is calling for a European copyright term extension to 70 years to create "a level playing field with the USA" (the US's 70 year term is the result of an effort to "create a level playing field with Europe" -- notice a trend here?). This despite the wealth of folk music that is embodied in Irish culture and performance, folk music that enrihces the public and artists without any copyright. Link (Thanks, Bernie!)
