The "Gravity" lamp reclines and goes to sleep when you're not in the
room. When you enter, it awakens, stands up, and turns on.
Fun Furde says, "The
Gravity is equal parts cute and creepy. Cute because it's sort of like
a pet that's happy to see you when you come home. Creepy because it's
a lamp that moves by itself! No idea if they're actually going to make
this or how much it will cost if they do. Or how they keep the
lightbulb from smashing when it hits the ground."

jazz's first theoretician, and remains its most important innovator.
His ideas led directly to the conception of three seminal jazz albums
in 1959: Miles Davis's Kind of Blue, John Coltrane's Giant Steps, and
Russell's own New York, New York. For the first time in nearly a
decade, Russell has released a new recording. Today he turns 82.

Well, you can, although now it has the ominous sounding name of

perhaps the coolest-looking of the bunch.)

Xeni Flies Zero G #10: goodbye, gravity
Xeni Flies Zero G #10: goodbye, gravity
09/16/2004 01:40 AM
Xeni Jardin:

Remember dreaming you could fly? It's exactly like that.
Before you move into weightlessness, between parabolas, g-force is
about double what it is on earth. Suddenly you're 300 pounds, and it
pushes your hair to your skull to your spine to your tail to the floor
and the meat on your body is suddenly stone. They tell you not to look
back, to keep your head still and aligned when the pressure starts.
Anything to avoid vertigo, because where there's vertigo there's
vomiting.
Waiting, your face becomes newly dense. You're a chipmunk carrying
cheeks full of bullets. Your blood strains. Your veins are streams
carrying too much silt.
And then, when the weight is worst, the invisible hands cramming your
spine into the plane's padded floor lose interest and lift away. What
was concrete is cotton. The hands reach beneath you, and lift you up
into nothing, and you float. And all there is to do when this happens
for the very first time is to laugh. Because it's impossible. Because
it's unnatural.
But the joke in your bones is that it feels perfectly natural, like
all your life you were intended to float. After all, just before you
came into the world, that's what you were doing in liquid. When you
leave, there you are again, becoming vapor. Breaking down from matter
to dust to air. Floating.
Last week, a friend said, "You'll tell children and grandchildren when
you're old, over and over again. Your family will be totally sick of
you explaining how awesome this felt the first time." He was only half
right. The grandchildren won't need my explanation. They'll know it
better than I do now. These zero-g joyrides will seem as crude and
dated to them as Model T Fords or ink-ribbon typewriters are for us.
They'll be floating plenty.
As I sit here, I can still feel it in my body. It comes in waves. I
want to hit "post," shut the application, close the laptop lid. Then
bend my knees a little and shove off, push up into the air above my
desk. Do the superman. Do a backflip. Bust a "crouching tiger hidden
dragon" move, karate-chop martian foes mid-air. And float away into
bed. It's natural now, and will remain that way forever. I miss it
already.

OSDL: Linux center of gravity?
01/09/2004 09:58 PMNewsForge learned recently, as a result of electronic conversations
with an anonymous (but well-known) Linux kernel hacker, that chatter
among some kernel hackers reflects a degree of distrust of OSDL, the
Open Source Development Lab. This report airs the major issues
identified in those conversations and allows OSDL the opportunity to
respond to them. We also asked IDC analyst Dan Kusnetzky and two
kernel hackers who work for OSDL, Linus Torvalds and Andrew Morton, to
weigh in with their own comments on OSDL's role and behavior.

A man who thought that
sunlight looks beautiful as it refracts through the side of a CD-ROM
shouldn't be trusted with power tools, but I guess they're more lax
about that up in Canada. Jim Watters, a former QA tester, had about 70
CDs and decided to make a lamp in order to recreate that warm, plastic
glow. The resulting DIY project is a wonderful fire hazard made of a
tube light and some plywood. (Thanks, Luke)

HOWTO make a gravity-defying room
HOWTO make a gravity-defying room
03/24/2005 02:22 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Two UC Berkeley students explain how they transformed their co-op room
into a mind-bending, gravity-defying suite of surreality:
The way this all got started was that my
friend and i were sitting around at dinner chatting about what to do
for the upcoming room-to-room party. We went through a whole bunch of
ideas for room themes. And then — you know how, sometimes when
you're bored, you look up and imagine what it would be like if gravity
turned upside down and you got to walk around on the ceiling? (Does
everyone have this daydream?) Anyway, we both mentioned it at the same
time, and then it dawned on us that we could make it happen. Or a
variant, anyway. I think sideways actually works better than
upside-down, because then you can integrate real people into the scene
in strange ways.

I'm sort of in love with this Tube Lamp by
Nik Willmore, which is a really dangerous thing since he lives and
works right here in New York. At $225, though, it's almost
cheap enough to just get and justify as a heirloom or something.
Here's your inheritance, kids, and it glows!
Oh, and if you are worried about getting one just because the bulbs
might burn out, apparently the 25-watt tubular bulbs can be gotten
almost anywhere, even Home Depot. And of course, you can't forget the
finishing touch - the control knob is a chromed replacement for a
Fender Telecaster.

It Lamp is great. Why ship a lamp in bulky packaging when you can make
a lamp from the packaging itself? Pop open the tube, flip out clip and
roll-out shade, and unfurl the cord. The lamp base will still have the
stamps and your address on it, but that's even better. It's on sale
for about 23 bucks.

Microsoft Looks to Extinguish LAMP
Microsoft Looks to Extinguish LAMP
06/17/2005 03:18 PMMicrosoft engineers have toiled for years to make the company's
software industrial strength and worthy of large corporations'
dollars.
Now the software giant faces a different challenge: fending off
open-source alternatives that are good enough for most jobs. At
Microsoft's TechEd customer conference last week, executives spelled
out the company's lineup to combat these cut-rate incursions onto its
turf.
In particular, the company is focused on improving its alternatives to
the so-called
LAMP stack, the combination of the Linux operating
system, Apache Web server, MySQL database, and
scripting languages PHP, Perl or Python.
Microsoft's anti-LAMP strategy is to heap features into its low-end
products and to build a comprehensive set of tools--spanning
development to management--in the hopes of making Windows Server more
attractive.

Chris
Cardinal—Hopefully carved from the finest anodized
aluminum by nude Pagan witches or something, the Oskar Table Lamp
delivers in areas other $465 dollar lamps fall hopelessly
short. Groundbreaking features include its ability to "fit in compact
spaces", and also provide "multi-directional lighting for tasking".
It gets better:
Able to stand alone or function as a
bookend, the best-selling design stays fixed while multidirectional
lighting is provided with a flexible metal arm and fully rotating
aluminum reflector.
While many other lamps (or bookends)
may also provide an "integrated toggle switch for turning the lamp on
and off," we challenge you to find one that has been blessed in
ancient Triskelion Rite Of Tea rituals to ensure the unrelenting favor
of the Sun. In fact, it's probably not this one, either.
Bulb not included.

eWeek: Sun to promote LAMP
eWeek: Sun to promote LAMP
08/16/2002 05:51 AMSchwartz said that at the edge of the Web, Sun will promote a LAMP
(Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) solution to developers. LAMP, a generic
open-source solution, is Sun's Linux-based solution available on its
newly released LX50 Intel-based machines running Linux or Solaris.
Schwartz referred to Sun's version as Sun LAMP. Apache is an
open-source Web server, MySQL is an open-source database and PHP is an
open-source language for creating middle-tier HTML applications.
"Our competition is Windows, but it will increasingly suffer from the
economic model Linux will promote," Schwartz said.
While Sun will continue to drive large deployments to the Java 2
Enterprise Edition (J2EE) infrastructure, the company will promote
LAMP for less complex applications.

Somebody
needs to steal the concept of the Ventana scroll lamp and manufacturer
a cut-rate version for less than the $700 the original goes for,
because I would like to place dozens of them in my apartment for
various uses, such as lighting up things, looking at, and swinging
them out 180° on their mounts and saying "huh," and "would you
look at that?" As it stands, though, a couple of halogen bulbs and a
roll of space toilet paper isn't going to pry the better part of a
grand out of my pocket.
The Ventana isn't the only lamp Pablo Designs has, either, and I
found many of them to be pretty nifty.

06/24/2005 06:58 PMThe LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl) software stack is emerging
as a popular and cost-effective Web development platform. This is
understandable given that it comprises a free operating system, Web

having a number of separate open source components is integration. The
XAMPP project aims to eliminate this problem. With XAMPP, there is no
reason for developers to skip over an open source solution when
