Congrats to Roland and Boris and.....

They've just launched Bryght - a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving there.

Vancouver is hot.

Here's Roland's post....

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this one. Yes, we are all Bryght guys :-) !

We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required, no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght site, please contact us.

Whither StreamLine you might ask? StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging platform.

The O'Reilly Factor

The O'Reilly Factor 12/19/2004 03:40 PM
I'll get back to the history tomorrow (Saturday). For now, though, I want to tell you about my experience tonight as a guest on the Bill O'Reilly show. I received a call this afternoon (Friday) from the producer inviting me to debate O'Reilly on the question: “Is dissent disloyal?” After the producer and I discussed this issue, O’Reilly (according to the producer) decided to redefine the question: “Can an American want the United States to lose the war in Iraq and still be patriotic?” Of course, this is a loaded question. It not-so-subtly implies that those who oppose the war want the United States to lose and, even worse, want American soldiers to die. One of Joseph McCarthy’s favorite tactics was to imply that anyone who believed in the social or economic principles of communism also supported the violent overthrow of the government. The tactic of guilt-by-inference is all-too-familiar in American history. (I'll return to McCarthyism in my next entry.) In any event, in our “debate” O’Reilly insisted on his “narrow” framing of the question and, when I called him on the issue, denied that he intended to imply anything about those who merely oppose the war. I accepted his framing of the question (it is, after all, his show) and argued that a patriotic citizen could in principle want the nation to lose a war if the war is unjust and if losing meant that fewer American soldiers would die for no good reason. O'Reilly maintained that losing a war necessarily means that more American soldiers will die than continuing the war and that no one could therefore patriotically wants the nation to lose. O’Reilly tossed out such ugly phrases as “despicable,” “traitor,” and “disloyal” to describe those who would disagree. The purpose, of course, was to excite his audience. After the show, I received dozens of emails, most of which were along the following lines: “You ought to be arrested, tried, convicted of wartime treason. And I don't have to tell you the penalty for that.” “I hope they are checking you out for being a traitor!!!” “You are not only despicable, but should go ahead and move out of the USA.” “I must imagine, Mr. Stone, that you will look over your shoulder a little bit, because maybe some soldier in a foxhole somewhere might be a tad angered with you and your lunacy. There may be a few G.I.s in Chicago even that would like to ‘speak’ with you.” “There is the tendency for citizens to take the law into their own hands in these cases. Decent, ordinary people, not of the left, are angry enough at the far left to be willing to go along with things you would consider unconscionable.” “You're a despicable Piece of feces, A Gutless Traitor. and I strongly suggest that you get your Terrorist Sympathizing Worthless ass out of this country while you can still walk and talk.” And so on. What do you make of all this in light of our on-going conversation?

UK Law
12/15/2003 01:00 PM
Just ahead of the US's spamming law, the UK has had their spamming law go into effect. It has different problems than the US law, but most people still feel it will do little to stop spam. In the meantime, though, there was a bit of pent up demand, as the agency set up to deal with spam complaints was inundated with people reporting spam. Now comes the real test: what will they do about the complaints and will that do anything at all to stop spam?

Lots More People Shop Offline, Buy

Lots More People Shop Offline, Buy
Online
09/23/2004 03:21 AM
Last year, people ripped me to shreds for mentioning there were times that I would window shop in a store, but eventually buy online. Well, if that's as evil as people made it out to be, it appears I'm in some good company. A new study says that nearly 70% of people now admit to doing some offline browsing, before purchasing online. The thing is, to me, it's no different than comparison shopping offline. If I'm looking to buy something, I may visit a few stores offline before finding a reasonable deal. Sometimes, a store will immediately offer a good enough deal, or a level of convenience or additional value that it's worth buying right away -- and sometimes not. Sites online are just one more place to comparison shop. At the same time, the reverse is true as well in some cases. There are plenty of times I've researched products online before buying locally at a store. Either way, it's clear that most people now have no qualms looking for the deal that makes the most sense for them, whether it's on or offline -- and both sides need to learn to deal with that.

the modesty of Bill O'Reilly

the modesty of Bill O'Reilly 05/11/2004 10:46 AM
WHYY reports that Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly, host of The O'Reilly Factor, will not authorize Fresh Air to relicense segments from his amazing appearance on Terry Gross's amazing show. Speculation why he'd ban the repeat of his worlds elsewhere is growing. But it is obvious to this writer that it is nothing more than a flash of modesty by this engaging figure, no doubt motivated by a desire to drive traffic to Fresh Air's site (again, it is here). Yet another example of commercial media reaching out to help noncommercial media.

Steve Earle vs. Bill O'Reilly 11/03/2003 09:29 PM
In this corner, Left-Wing Redneck Steve Earle! "The deal is, he's gonna interrupt me and then eventually he's gonna tell me to shut up," Earle says. "That's what he does, then on to the next thing. Equating any of that with a serious political discussion is like thinking pro wrestling is real. But the worst that comes out of it is I get the shit kicked out of me on Fox News and we get free publicity for the tour. It's a win-win situation. The worst part is I actually have to watch Fox."

I *heart* Steve Earle.

Sorry, but it's probably already been aired by now. Anyone catch it?

Terry Gross conducted an extraordinary interview with notorious demagogue Bill O'Reilly on her Fresh Air last October (listen here). Now, O'Reilly is withholding permission for NPR to relicence portions of the program. Please tell all your friends about this interview and get them to listen to it, so that O'Reilly's plan to bury the interview backfires and this becomes the definitive O'Reilly interview of all time. Bill O'Reilly mistakes Globe and Mail
for Socialist Worker
04/22/2004 02:38 PM
Bill O'Reilly called The Globe and Mail, a rock-ribbed, conservative Canadian newspaper "the far-left Toronto Globe and Mail," because a columnist in the paper descibed the Fox News Network (which is coming to Canada) as humorously exemplary of American foolishness. O'Reilly urged his listeners to write in to the columnist and give him what-for, and they did, calling him an "intellectual" and a "Canadian" and asking if he'd ever served in Vietnam.
Reacting to my column, which cheerfully suggested that the proposal to bring the Fox News Channel to Canada should be acted upon promptly, so that we can all take a look, and get a laugh, O'Reilly gave us a Fox-style whacking. In his segment The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day, he quoted from my column (which called him "pompous"), dismissed The Globe as a lefty outfit and said, "Hey you pinheads up there, I may be pompous, but at least I'm honest."

bt800_rev.jpgFor the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge, which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though, Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.

Sapir/Whorf raises its head again in study of the Piraha tribe. I can't stop thinking about this article which appeared in the Globe and Mail Friday.

A study appearing today in the journal Science reports that the hunter-gatherers seem to be the only group of humans known to have no concept of numbering and counting. Not only that, but adult Piraha apparently can't learn to count or understand the concept of numbers or numerals, even when they asked anthropologists to teach them and have been given basic math lessons for months at a time ... the Piraha are the only people known to have no distinct words for colours.
They have no written language, and no collective memory going back more than two generations. They don't sleep for more than two hours at a time during the night or day. Even when food is available, they frequently starve themselves and their children, Prof. Everett reports.
They communicate almost as much by singing, whistling and humming as by normal speech.
They frequently change their names, because they believe spirits regularly take them over and intrinsically change who they are.
They have no creation myths, tell no fictional stories and have no art.

Can any of our anthropologists or linguists comment? I had thought that narrative was the common link in all human cultures....
