Graphics: An answer
08/02/2004 11:50 AM
I've been trying to find out if the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chipset in the Thinkpad X40 will outperform the Radeon Mobility in my Thinkpad X22. I've looked lots of places and blogged the question, but it's been tough finding any info other than that the Intel chipset uses system memory rather than onboard memory, meaning it can access more, slower memory. IBM tech support had no info, so I called the account manager for Harvard, since I'm looking at doing the upgrade through my Berkman affiliation. The first person I talked with, Eric G., didn't have an answer, but...

Radeon 9800 Pro Video Card $155 Shipped

Radeon 9800 Pro Video Card $155 Shipped 09/16/2004 09:09 AM

visiontek_9800pro.jpg imageNew York electronics superstore J&R has the VisionTek Xtasy ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) video card on sale for just $150 with $5 shipping (New York state crew pays tax). The 9800 Pro isn't the most cutting edge video card out there today, but I can personally vouch for its continued ability to play all the newest games. It's still able to pump polygons in Doom 3, Tribes: Vengeance, and Rome: Total War just fine. Better than fine, actually, and I paid $300 for mine just six sad months ago.

Oh, and despite the dorky name, VisionTek is a fairly well-known brand, so I wouldn't worry about that.

My question is this: You can get the 9800 Pro with 128mb or with 256mb. Does any game actually use 256mb and is it necessary to pay the extra to have the extra memory?
