Gateway 7000 Series Ideal Security
Solution for Small Office

Gateway 7000 Series Ideal Security
Solution for Small Office
07/15/2004 01:42 PM
Gateway's 7000 service access points include all the security and authentication that an office of 5 to 25 users need: Gateway released its two 7000 series models a few months ago and have received very little press. The unit comes in 802.11g ($299) and 802.11a/g ($399) configurations. It sports support for all the popular standards, including 802.1X passthrough, WPA-PSK, WDS (Wireless Distribution System), and others. It even includes two separate wide-area-networking (WAN) interfaces: if you have a separately segmented guest wired network, you can physically connect the device through the guest interface to your public WAN and the private interface to your private WAN. The device can segregate all wireless traffic. It can also do this using Virtual LAN (VLAN) tagging by providing multiple SSIDs that are logically separate for guest and authorized user: the traffic is routed by your VLAN switch or system. But the real winning feature in this unit is its built-in RADIUS server that supports both WEP and WPA over 802.1X using PEAP (Protected EAP). Because Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.3 both include PEAP, and it's possible to use PEAP affordably on other platforms including Linux and Solaris, PEAP is currently the broadest standard to support. Effectively, using a $299 or $399 device, you can have enterprise-level security without a separate RADIUS server or the administrative overhead. But it only supports a handful of users. I was interested immediately in this built-in server aspect, and received a review unit some time ago, but was unable to get past some initial confusion in configuration. I started from scratch today, using the factory defaults reset button, and had no problems whatsoever with the same instructions, software, and firmware, so let's attribute my earlier issues to user error. The device is extremely easy to configure. I followed the directions and powered up the unit, plugging my wired LAN into the LAN1 port. I ran the auto-configuration software that finds the access point. It assumes that you have a DHCP server running and this software handles the discovery of the 7000 series IP address. You click a link in the software to open a browser and enter the default passwords to connect. Once connected, there's very little to configure for an ordinary network. I went to the User Management section and created an account for myself. I then clicked on the Security tab under the Advanced section and...

BenQ P50 in February for $800

BenQ P50 in February for $800 01/06/2005 02:56 PM

BenQ finally showed off the P50 smartphone, with built-in Wi-Fi and GSM/GPRS radios, as well as a 1.3-megapixel camera. The bummer is they are quoting a price of $800—almost twice as much as its main competitor, the Treo 650 (after rebates).

Benq P50 Launches in Italy (Maybe)

Benq P50 Launches in Italy (Maybe) 04/18/2005 03:08 PM

benq_p50.jpgI'm relying on machine translation here, but it looks like BenQ has finally released the long lusted-after P50—in Italy. The quad-band GSM phone should work in the US just fine, though, so if you really want to get a hold of the device that is a lot like a 'Windows Treo with Wi-Fi' (in my estimation, at least), then you'll probably be able to import one for the better part of $1,000.

We might be wrong about the launch, though, since machines have a hard time parsing language (let alone crazy). We've been talking about this one forev er, though. I don't know what the hold-up is.

BenQ E40 Lady Phone 07/20/2004 12:36 PM

Women scrawl; Lord knows how they scrawl! (Especially on pictures, you know.) Thank goodness, then, that BenQ's new E40 digital camera, targeted at "fun, fearless females" has the ability to scrawl all over pictures. All over the place! Scrawls! On the pictures! What's a scrawl! No idea!

Even better (read: not better), you can add "photo frames" to your images. Presumably you can scrawl on those, too.

Expansys Takes Pre-Orders for Benq P50

Expansys Takes Pre-Orders for Benq P50 12/24/2004 12:16 PM

benq_p50xp.jpg imageMy search for mobile satisfaction continues. I haven't been blown away by the Treo 650—not enough to pay $650 for it, at least—and my laptop still seems like best size-to-effectiveness tool I have. But I'm holding out hope for the BenQ P50 Pocket PC Phone, which Expansys just listed for pre-order on their site (for what that's worth) at just $450. It's faster than the Treo, has a better camera (at least higher megapixel), and has built-in Wi-Fi. My holy grail is to be able to update the site from a phone (including image editing, which is the big rub). I might just be able to pull it off with this one—I hope this means its coming soon.

benq_fp231w.jpg imageThe only bad thing I can say about BenQ's new FP231W large-screen LCD monitor is that my video card might not have the polygonal prowess needed to pump out 1,920 by 1,200 pixels worth of videogame. However, if there were one sitting on my desk here -- and I'm cleaning off a little spot, actually, just so it knows that it would be welcome to stay over -- I would take the 23-inch, 16ms flat panel and a favorite game and try. Sure, we might drop some frames here and there, "chug" some of you kids call it, but we'd be trying something new together, which is beautiful, really, and although it might be a little awkward at first, I'm sure we'd both learn to make it work.

According to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30, the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold, compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. Two New BenQ Audio Players: Joybee 102
and Joybee 180
06/02/2004 04:48 PM

joybee_180_102.jpg image

Two new mobile players in BenQ's Joybee line, the Joybee 102 and the Joybee 180 (pictured right). The 102 is billed as the world's smallest, a moderately-contested title that we'll let those to whom size matters sort out, and comes in 128MB and 256MB versions and three different colors. It is also interesting to note that along with Windows and MacOS, the Joybee is specifically listed as support Linux.

The Joybee 180 is slightly more interesting, with a built-in FM transmitter/receiver/recorder, interchangeable face plates, and a 'walkie-talkie' feature -- no idea if it can communicate with any other devices besides other Joybees. It beats its little brother in battery life, too, with the Joybee 180 getting 15 hours compared to the Joybee 102's 8.
