Review: Today, you can buy two variants of the Athlon 64 processor 3500+. One is built using AMD's older 130nm process, the other manufactured on 90nm. Do these make a real-world difference? We take some thermal readings, and speculate on why you can't buy faster Athlon 64's on 90nm.

01/06/2005 12:23 PM
PowerLogix and Other World Computing (OWC) today announced the PowerForce 750GX G3 processor upgrade for original PCI-based Apple Power Macintosh computers. The 1.0 Gigahertz (GHz) PCI 750GX is the latest addition to the PowerForce G3 processor line. It operates at 1GHz and includes 1.0 Megabytes (MB) of L2 cache, also running at 1GHz. The PowerForce 750GX utilizes the 20x bus multiplier of the IBM PowerPC 750GX processor to allow older PCI-based Power Macs to reach 1GHz speeds. "The PowerForce 750GX allows older Power Macs to operate at modern CPU (central processing unit) speeds, extending the life of these machines at minimal expense," said Larry O'Connor, president of OWC. "And not only can users of the original PCI-based Macs now work faster and more effectively than ever, since the card is compatible with Mac OS 8.6 and higher, they'll also have the added benefit of using the operating system of their choice. This includes Mac OS X, which is simply phenomenal, especially when used with OWC's XPostFacto." The PowerForce 750GX is compatible with the 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600 models, as well as select Power Computing and Umax clones. It alsos include a built-in fan sink to provide necessary CPU cooling, fail-safe protection circuitry (in case the card is not fully plugged into the motherboard CPU slot), CPU Director software for adjusting speeds on the fly and compatibility with add-on PCI cards.

Shuttle Athlon 64 XPC: SN95G5

Shuttle Athlon 64 XPC: SN95G5 08/11/2004 09:58 AM

sn95g5_3d2.jpg imageI don't know if it's been officially announced or not, but a new Shuttle XPC small form factor PC has shown up on the Euro version of Shuttle's site, dumping plenty of details about the SN95G5. The new aluminum barebones system uses Nvidia's nForce 3 Ultra chipset (meaning it's for Athlon 64 CPUs), the custom "ICE" heatpipe for low-noise cooling, Serial ATA and more (basically it's v v hot and will be v v fast).

Looking over the site I can't imagine it's a leak - some non-English reviews are going up today - but it doesn't look like anything has been announced in the US market yet. Reader Kristian Norland quoted a price of around $575 just for the unit, though - that's about twice as much as previous XPC cases from Shuttle have retailed for in the US. If anyone would care to qualify that, I'd appreciate it.
