Marco over at PHP Arch is talking about a new approach to computer
book publishing, focusing on online books that cover detailed aspects
of PHP (think about a mini book just on GD). [_Go_]
Bias Note: Marco did ask me if I want to be an author in this series
but I haven't made any committments or even thought about if I'm
really interested. I do think that Marco has a good idea here and one
that is long overdue. I'm tired of books that try to cover everything
and leave out what I need. If I get a review copy when it comes out
then I'll review it here.

Open Access Publishing Takes Another
Step Forward
06/17/2005 05:02 PMScience Commons - a new project of Creative Commons that works to
encourage sharing of scientific and academic knowledge - has launched
an Open Access Law Program. The Program is designed to make legal
scholarship "open access," that is freely available online to
everyone, without undue copyright and licensing restrictions. The
Program involves an Open Access Law Author Pledge, Open Access Law
Principles and an Open Access Law Model Publication
Agreement. Our very own Chairman & CEO, Lawrence Lessig, is one
of the first signatories to the Open Access Law Author Pledge. In
addition, 21 important law reviews have adopted the Open Access
Principles, or have policies that are consistent with them. Leading
journals like such as Michigan Law Review, Animal Law, Harvard Journal
of Law & Technology, Indiana Law Journal, Lewis & Clark Law Review,
Michigan Law Review, Michigan State Law Review and, New York Law
School Law Review, Texas Law Review, Vanderbilt Law Review, and Wayne
Law Review and Michigan State Law Review have signed on, as have all
of the journals published by Duke Law School and Villanova Law School.
More information about the Program is available at the Science
Commons Program page. The Program is one part of the Science
Commons Publishing Project, which is working to support open access to
scholarly research in a wide range of disciplines including
agriculture, entomology, biology, anthropology and now law.

PUBLISHING
YOUR OWN BOOK
PUBLISHING
YOUR OWN BOOK
03/06/2004 02:08 AM
The New York Times recently
wrote a stor
y about self-publishing,
noting that it's come a long way from the old, expensive, disreputable
'vanity publishing' scams of a few years ago. Some major publishing
houses now have a stake in the leading so-called 'print on demand'
(POD) publishers, and although it's still a one-in-a-million
proposition, a few self-published books have made the leap to best
sellers (though average sales is only 150). Mostly, these successes
have come from the author's own initiatives, using viral marketing,
and
primarily from online sales.
The 'Big 3' in POD publishing are:
Borders Group/Random House
(Xlibris -- $500 for graphics, proofreading, an ISBN number, LOC
registration, copyright, online sales page, and a listing in major
book
vendors' catalogues and online sites; softcover)
1stBooks
($698 for graphics, extensive marketing support, an ISBN number, LOC
registration, copyright, online sales; softcover or hardcover)
Barnes
& Noble
(iUniverse -- $459 for cover graphics, marketing toolkit, 5 free
copies, an ISBN number, LOC registration, copyright, and a listing in
major book vendors' catalogues and online sites; softcover)
All three vendors also offer more extended services (hard copy,
promotion etc.) at an extra charge, all three offer a pdf e-book
version of your work, and with all three you retain ownership of the
work, so you can shop it to a mainstream publisher later at no
additional cost. Here is a table the Times provided with more information:

I've been giving some though to who to get to publish my book, when
it's finished in June. I'm partial to New Society Publishers,
since they promote themselves as 'The Activist Publisher' and publish
exclusively "Books to Build a New Society". They were the printers of
Radical Simplicity,
and they're Canadian to boot. But one way or another, my book is going
to see the light of day, and if that means self-publishing, so be
it.
I know many bloggers have aspirations to land a book contract, and a
few that I know have succeeded, though some of these contracts are a
lot more generous than others, and none are for what I'd call big
money. What do you think? Do you have dreams of publishing your work
in
more than the emphemeral world of the blogosphere? If so, would you
self-publish? How would you get around the challenge that faces all
new
writers (exactly the same paradox that faces new university graduates
looking for work): If you haven't already been published, no one will
publish you.

Online Publishing Discussion List
Online Publishing Discussion List
04/09/2004 04:02 PMMarketing Wonk has changed their name (again) to MarketingVox.
Apparently "wonk" has a negative connotation to some people.
As part of the change, the "I-" series of discussion lists
are being changed to reflect the new branding. So I-Sales becomes MarketingVox
Commerce and the other lists have similar changes. I-Blog, the
list I moderate, not only has a new name, but a new editorial focus as
well. Rather than just discussing blogs in business, we’re now
talking about all sorts of online publishing. I-Blog is now MarketingVox
Publishing.
If you have a question about CMSs, want
to talk about the best content strategies to increase sales leads, or
are wondering about the changing business model for online newspapers,
MV|Publishing is the place to do it.

Shirky: stupid (c) laws block me from publishing own work online
Clay Shirky tells Boing
Boing:
Welcome to the Copyfight. So, at Etech this year, I
gave a talk entitled
Ontology is Overrated. I want to put a transcript up online, and
Mary Hodder, who recorded the talk, graciously agreed to give me a
copy of the video.
When she came by NYC last week, she dropped off a DVD, which I then
wanted to convert to AVI (the format used by my transcription
service.) I installed ffmpeg and tried to convert the material, at
which point I got an error message which read "To comply with
copyright laws, DVD device input is not allowed." Except, of course,
there are no copyright laws at issue here, since I'M THE COPYRIGHT
HOLDER.
Got that? I am in possession of a video, of me, shot by a friend,
copied to a piece of physical media given to me as a gift. In the
video, I am speaking words written by me, and for which I am the clear
holder of the copyright. I am working with said video on a machine I
own. Every modern legal judgment concerning copyright, from the Berne
Convention to the Betamax case, is on my side. AND I CAN'T MAKE A COPY
DIRECTLY FROM THE DEVICE. This is because copyright laws do not exist
to defend the moral rights of copyright holders -- they exist to help
enforce artificial scarcity.
Copyright holders in my position, who want to use Creative Commons
licensing to share material, are treated as pathological cases,
because we're not behaving in the extortionate manner that current
regulations are designed to protect.
I've gotten the copy another way, and the transcript will go up,
but this is the state of the world, circa 2005: I can be prevented
from copying my own words from my own devices, precisely because I
want to share them freely, a use the law is perfectly prepared to
regard as irrelevant.
Yes. Welcome to the
copyfight. The scary thing is that more and more people are beginning
to think it is NORMAL not to be able to do what Clay is upset about
not being able to do.

How hard is it to put a book online,
legally?
How hard is it to put a book online,
legally?
04/09/2004 06:31 PMSometimes people ask us why we created the Creative Commons, and we
often say that we wanted there to be an easy way for you to share your
creations and also to build a large pool of creative work that is easy
to redistribute, print, (and if the license allows) collage, remix, or
even sell to others.
If you're wondering what the world without Creative Commons is
like, check out this helpful primer on the question "How Can I
Tell Whether a Book Can Go Online?" The answer, as you can see, is
quite complicated, including the various laws around the world. The
page doesn't mention CC, but if it did, one of the top bullets would
be "look for a Creative Commons mark" and the permission and legal
questions that take up the rest of the page would be solved.
