New Study on Who is Building Large
Networks and Why
09/08/2004 12:19 PM
The University of Georgia's New Media Consortium recently conducted a study examining large Wi-Fi deployments in the United States: The study differentiates between what it calls Wi-Fi clouds, which have continuous coverage and Wi-Fi zones, which offer interrupted coverage. The researchers found 38 clouds and 16 zones. The study examines who owns the networks and what the owners hope to gain from building the networks. It's a thorough report on the intentions of hotspot builders today. The next step will be trying to figure out if the intentions of hotspot network developers are being met. For example, 43 percent of cloud developers cited stimulating economic development as a motivating factor for building the network. But it's not clear if large Wi-Fi networks in small towns actually succeed in stimulating economic development [link via Rushton]....

Survey says Apple employees optimistic
on company’s future
03/30/2005 05:20 PM
Apple Computer employees are optimistic on their company's future, New York research firm Vault has found in new employee surveys on the computer giant. Says a former customer solutions specialist, "The business of the company is doing great especially with the iPod and their innovative designs. However just as any large corporation the large scale structure, the organization gets lost at the lower levels. The micromanagement needs to be but to a minimum and something needs to be done to increase retention and lower the turnover rate which is substantial." A project manager writes, "Apple has its challenges for market share, and will never compete directly with Dell or HP. Instead, the focus is on creativity and the Digital Hub. Products such as the iPod are keeping us profitable during the economic downturn. If Apple continues to develop innovative and quality products like the iPod, then the long term picture should be secure." Another project manager observes, "Apple today is just like any other conservative company. Just managed the service implementation for a new product we will announce at MacWorld 2005. This should be a good year for Apple but it will not reflect in my salary or any kind of bonus I dream of receiving." Vault's employee surveys give investors and jobseekers insight into the company's business operations. Neither Vault nor its employee surveys are endorsed by or affiliated with Apple Computer.

When 4-year old Graham logs on to the PC in his bedroom, he discovers he can't play his favorite computer game because he is out of his weekly allowance of "FUN credits" that had been issued by his mom on Saturday morning. What to do? Well, Graham can earn more FUN credits by cleaning his room or by picking up his toys. That's because each toy is equipped with a tiny electronic device that sends a "credit" notice back to Graham's computer once it is placed in its rightful spot in his toy box or room.

01/03/2005 12:03 PM
Apple Computer may acquire TiVo during 2005 in a bid to become a major player in the digital home, suggests a new report by Forrester Research. "The Battle For The Digital Home," a new report from Forrester Research, Inc., evaluates ten industries, including consumer electronics, PC, content, games, telecommunications, and cable, that are vying for control of the digital home. It concludes that some industries are better positioned for success, but all must focus on capturing and controlling new revenue streams through key cross-industry partnerships and acquisitions. Because the digital home power positions traverse industry lines, Forrester sees many partnerships forming during the next three years. Potential digital home alliances include: Apple's acquisition of TiVo, providing Apple with a service platform for TV and video on-demand; a joint venture between the NFL and FOX to create an immersive experience where sports fans can choose viewer-selected camera angles and split-screen content; Sony's acquisition of Clear Channel to combine Sony's music and devices business with Clear Channel's radio stations to offer personalized time-shifted digital radio; Google's acquisition of TV Guide's interactive program guide allows it to deliver a best-in-class personalized media application – video search; a partnership between Microsoft and BellSouth, Verizon, and SBC to provide an operating platform for IPTV, and finally, Disney's acquisition of Electronic Arts.

Research Director Of BSA Study Admits

Research Director Of BSA Study Admits
BSA Is Misleading The Public
07/19/2004 06:21 AM
Two weeks ago we noted that the BSA had come out with their latest bogus study on the numbers concerning losses associated with illegal software copying. The main problem we had with that study (as with any such study) is the ridiculous assumption that every piece of copied software is a "lost sale," as well as the failure to admit that unauthorized copying often also has a positive result in introducing the software to those who can't afford it -- but who later do buy it when they can. Now, buried at the end of a NY Times piece that mostly focuses on the ridiculous INDUCE Act, is the fact that IDG, who did the study for the BSA, admits that the BSA is being purposely misleading in how they presented the results. The article quotes the research director at IDG saying that they believe approximately 10% of copied software represents a lost sale, and that they call the total number they came up with "the retail value of pirated software." It was only once the BSA took the study and started promoting it, that they called it "sales lost to piracy." Considering the number of laws that get put in place because of misleading studies like this, shouldn't this be top-of-the-article news, rather than hidden down at the end? Meanwhile, the BSA responds to the claim by saying it doesn't really matter if the real number is "a little lower." I had no idea that numbers inflated by a factor of 10 were just a little bit off...
