SkyPort Fiber Optic Skylight System

SkyPort Fiber Optic Skylight System 04/18/2005 10:04 AM

skyport_luminaries.jpgDirect from Sweden, Parans shows off their Skyport system: light-collecting panels which you install on your roof, allowing them to feed a remote part of your house with the purest of natural light. The Skyport system uses SunWire—"light transporting cable" (read: fiber optics)—to bring sunlight to its connected "luminaries". Björks, as they're called, are specially designed to generate a light output of up to 4,000 lux, presumably on a clear day. The SunWire allows for you to distribute sunlight up to three stories down into a building and the Björks come in three different shapes, letting you maximize light output for a particular room's layout. Pricing and availability are heretofore a mystery, so you'll have to wait for now.

Their advantages over the Ethernet interfaces that come standard in Power Macs lie in the fact that fiber optic cables can cover distances up to 550 meters without repeaters and are resistant to outside RF and electro-magnetic interference. Small Tree's new product also supports jumbo frames for higher data transfer rates and can improve networking performance when used with the company's 802.3ad load balancing software.

Digital sundial: passive timekeeping

12/02/2003 01:39 AM
Gosh, this is clever.
...the device is purely passive - it operates without electricity, and has no moving parts. Instead, the sunlight is cast through two cleverly designed masks in the shape of numbers that show the current time of day. The sundial is available in two versions, for use in either hemisphere. Placed on the inside of a south-facing window (north-facing in the southern hemisphere), the sundial can be read through the horizontal mirror. The display updates every 10 minutes, and gives a remarkably accurate record of the time during the daylight hours.

reserator1plus.jpgZalman has officially announced its Reserator 1 Plus passive water cooling system, a hulking black upgrade to the blue model first released over a year ago. The new model includes new CPU and GPU cooler designs as well as providing an anti-corrosive water additive in the box. I hope they changed the internal pump they used on the previous model, as I discovered the 1 Plus while searching for solutions to quiet the clattering propeller in the original Reserator sitting on my desk.

Since Zalman's website doesn't really have good information on the Plus 1, have a look at this pre-production model "review" on Hexus (really more of a 'we saw this thing at a show'). The release model isn't blue, but black, and will cost $300. Despite the noise problems I'm having with my current one, I sort of want to upgrade, but only because that would be a convenient excuse to build a whole new gaming rig.

Compound Eyes and Optic Flow

Compound Eyes and Optic Flow 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
A new Wired article talks about the increasing interest among researchers in optic flow as a solution for UAV vision. Optic flow is the method by which insects with compound eyes, such as Dragonflies, perceive the world. It allows creatures with tiny brains and low resolution eyes to gather enough information quickly to perform highly accurate navigation even in complex environments. It's worth noting that optic flow has been a topic of interest among neural net and software researchers for decades.
