Oh man, we really don't want people to think we're fixated on the whole cellphone number portability thing (though it is nice to be pre-occupied with something besides the dismal failure of the N-Gage), but there's a new report out from Mobile Competency about how the cellphone companies still aren't ready for November 24th, the first day the new rules go into effect (even though they're had no problem charging their subscribers for it for months). They're recommending that if you can manage it, to wait until next year to switch. Read...

Carriers Still Trying Last Minute Delays
On Number Portability
11/19/2003 07:03 PM
This just never ends... While most of the major wireless carriers have given up trying to stop wireless local number portability (and in the case of Verizon Wireless, publicly embraced number portability), it appears that some of the smaller carriers are now making their last minute desperation play to stop it. A group representing smaller rural carriers has given the FCC an ultimatum, saying that if they don't stop number portability by tomorrow, they'll go to court to get portability delayed. They claim that number portability leads to an unfair competitive situation where the bigger carriers can stomp on the smaller ones. The FCC's response? Nope. Number portability is going into effect Monday no matter how much carriers of all sizes complain about it.

New Largest Known Prime Number
http://www.mersenne.org/24 036583.htm

Josh Findley, a volunteer in the Mersenne.org research project called the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS), has discovered the largest known prime number. Findley used his home PC and free software by George Woltman and Scott Kurowski as part of an international grid of 240,000 networked computers in virtually every time zone of the world. The new number, expressed as 2 to the 24,036,583th power minus 1, has 7,235,733 decimal digits and was discovered May 15th. It is nearly a million digits larger than the previous largest known prime number, and belongs to a special class of rare prime numbers called Mersenne primes . The discovery marks only the 41st known Mersenne prime, named after Marin Mersenne , a 17th century French monk who first studied the rare numbers 300 years ago. Mersenne primes are most relevant to number theory, but most participants join GIMPS simply for the fun of having a role in real research - and the chance of finding a new Mersenne prime.

Largest Prime Number Ever Found

A 26-year-old graduate student in the US has made mathematical history by discovering the largest known prime number. The new number is 6,320,430 digits long. It took just over two years to find using a distributed network of more than 200,000 computers. Michael Shafer a chemical engineering student at Michigan State University used his office computer to contribute spare processing power to the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS). The project has more than 60,000 volunteers from all over the world taking part.

"I had just finished a meeting with my advisor when I saw the computer had found the new prime," Shafer says. "After a short victory dance, I called up my wife and friends involved with GIMPS to share the great news."

Prime numbers are positive integers that can only be divided by themselves and one. Mersenne primes are an especially rare type of prime that take the form 2 p-1, where p is also a prime number. The new number can be represented as 220,996,011-1. It is only the 40th Mersenne prime to have ever been found.
