These newly UL Approved windows provide thermographers with a safe and efficient means of inspecting medium and high voltage electrical equipment. The windows work with all infrared cameras. The performance of these windows has been improved and the cost drastically reduced by innovating a new infrared transmissive material and controlling the entire manufacturing process. Intel Delivers Breakthrough PC
Technologies To Enhance Digital Home and

06/25/2004 08:27 PM
“Improved Audio, Video and Graphics Enable Broader Set of PC Uses SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 21, 2004 - In one of the most significant PC platform changes in a decade, Intel Corporation today announced products that usher in a range of audio, video and other capabilities previously found only on specialty PCs. In addition to making the PC experience more entertaining and productive, these technologies pave the way for such emerging capabilities as High Definition (HD) video, 7.1 surround sound and robust file protection for office and home users. These technologies are helping create a new kind of PC, an all-in-one “hi-fi” device with high-definition video, high-fidelity sound and wireless connectivity, according to Louis Burns, vice president and general manager, Intel Desktop Platforms Group.”Just as an afterthought, that press release reminds me of what I dislike intensely about politicians- glittering generalities. “New technologies” and “digital revolution”. Hogwash! In a year we’ll look back and decide that the technology was just another evolutionery step in CPU design and that all those marvelous toys are just so much hype, since about 1% of it ever happened. Oh, the future is certainly bright enough, but look at the realities of it all: Intel has to accept AMD’s 64-bit chip code as the gold standard, their new chips are hobbled and flawed, and they’re pinning their hopes on dual-core chips that aren’t in fab yet, because they weren’t supposed to be produced until 2006. It’s pretty clear that Intel, for whatever reason, made a serious tactical error when it came to 64-bit desktop chips and now they’re trying ever so hard to catch up. I’ve never cared that much for Intel, it’s true. I simply think that they produce good chip concepts, but the execution is a little lame and the prices are too high by 40%. At least they make good motherboards (usually). And in all this time, they haven’t figured out their errors. Maybe they can come up with an entirely new bell or whistle to regain the lead, but I don’t know what it could be… Maybe direct I/O ports on the CPU? Who knows.I do know one thing- “an all-in-one “hi-fi” device with high-definition video, high-fidelity sound and wireless connectivity” doesn’t hold the promise of anything startlingly new and innovative, to me. I think they call it a ‘Home Theatre’ package.

Global Grids and Software Toolkits: A Study of Four Grid Middleware Technologies by Parvin Asadzadeh, Rajkumar Buyya, Chun Ling Kei, Deepa Nayar, and Srikumar Venugopal
http://www.gridbus.org/pa pers/gmchapter.pdf

Grid is an infrastructure that involves the integrated and collaborative use of computers, networks, databases and scientific instruments owned and managed by multiple organizations. Grid applications often involve large amounts of data and/or computing resources that require secure resource sharing across organizational boundaries. This makes Grid application management and deployment a complex undertaking. Grid middlewares provide users with seamless computing ability and uniform access to resources in the heterogeneous Grid environment. Several software toolkits and systems have been developed, most of which are results of academic research projects, all over the world. This chapter will focus on four of these middlewares--UNICORE, Globus, Legion and Gridbus. It also presents our implementation of a resource broker for UNICORE as this functionality was not supported in it. A comparison of these systems on the basis of the architecture, implementation model and several other features is included.

Mobilization of Software Developers: The Free Software Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchi
http://ope nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdf

Abstract by Author:
Free/open source software (F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open disclosure.

How can free software compete with

How can free software compete with
commercial developers?
11/05/2003 10:55 AM
The amazing thing about the free vs. proprietary software race is that free software is in it at all. With all the resources larger proprietary software companies have at their command, you'd think their products would be unfailingly easy to use, virtually bug-free, and priced so low that no one would mind paying for them. But this is not the case. Why isn't it? You'd think a software company full of carefully-selected programmers, project leaders, market researchers, quality control personnel, professional documentation writers, and a technical support staff would have no trouble beating any open source project -- with both hands tied behind its corporate back -- even if it gave the open source project a 3 km lead in a 5 km race.
