The NYT is reporting that AOL is providing software to customers to block pop-ups. The sheer number of ironies in this article is simply delicious, and renders further comment unnecessary: 1) "AOL pioneered the often annoying but effective pop-up format" 2) "10 percent of its users had chosen not to receive pop-ups from AOL's own service, an option that has been harder to find than the new blocking software." Hard to find? Almost impossible. 3) "the number of sites that will accept pop-ups is increasing, including ever more sites owned by AOL Time Warner like Mapquest and CNN.com."

Staying social

Staying social 06/05/2005 11:35 PM

June is finals month, but the call of @media 2005 is hard to resist. I won't be attending the actual conference (sadly my student budget doesn't stretch that far) but I'll be in London on Saturday the 11th to ride on the coat-tails of the conference.

PPK (yes, that PPK) is hosting a JavaScript get-together in the afternoon at a Thames-side pub; confirmed attendees so far are PPK, myself, Stuart Langridge, Dean Edwards and Jeremy Keith but anyone else who wants to set the JavaScript world to rights is more than welcome to attend.

Planning a little further ahead, I'll be in and around San Francisco from the 11th to the 16th of July. My diary is more or less open at the moment, so if there's anything fun going on I'd love to hear about it.

Update: I almost forgot, I'm also attending the London Geek Dinner on the 7th of June. If you're interested, there are still 12 places left (out of 200).

Staying valid

Staying valid 05/02/2004 05:01 PM

Andrei Herasimchuk:

There seems no automatic way to keep a site valid with web standards unless you close it off to the rest of the world to contribute to it. I will not do that anytime soon.

There is: I'm doing it. Next Thursday will mark the one year anniversary of my switching to application/xhtml+xml as the content-type header for this site, for user agents that support it. Using that content-type forces Gecko engine browsers to refuse to render pages if they are not well-formed XML, so if a page is invalid I hear about it pretty quickly.

So how do you keep a frequently updated site with data from external sources and user comments valid? There are really only two things you need to do. Firstly, ensure that everything going IN to the system (entries and comments) is valid XHTML. I do that using a simple validation system for comments and a bookmarklet for my own entries. Secondly, any and all data from external sources (my blogroll from blo.gs, blogmark URLs added using a bookmarklet) needs to be entity-escaped before being displayed on the site. In my case, a call to PHP's htmlspecialchars() function is all that's needed.

I'm not saying my system is ideal - the need for well formed markup in comments is a major usability issue even on a site with an audience consisting mostly of web developers. But it's certainly possible to operate a site in XHTML with frequent updates and user comments while staying valid at the same time.

Sponsorship, jobs and staying alive

Sponsorship, jobs and staying alive 08/07/2004 05:37 PM

I really think Om Malik is just jealous - as Anil has the perfect job - getting paid to do what you LOVE to do.

Anil works for SixApart - has a real adult boss now and (in theory) is building up a bunch of founder's equity in a company destined to go places. So here's Om Malik complaining about Anil plugging his product.

MORE BELOW from ME on this issue of staying alive and getting paid for it......

Here's Om's post.....

File this one in the "Blogging world is so incestuous category." By now unless you are a presidential candidate you have heard about Anil Dash, a former New York hipster who has sold his soul to Silicon Valley and moved to the left coast. He has this little blog, which is kinda popular, and that makes him an A-List blog-dude. On his blog, he has this thing called sidelinks, which actually got the whole sidelink movement started. It is a compilation of lots of funny things, interesting things and even sometimes sad things.

So why is it that I see at least one or two mentions of MoveableType/Six Apart every day? I am sure there is a world, and links outside those cubicle walls. My theory is that Anil just is drinking the kool-aid :-) and like all SV folks is becoming tunnel visioned. We want the old Anil back.

(PS: Anil still remains one of my favorite peeps in Planet Kalifornia! Also I simply ran out of things to say, so I am picking on AD! :-) Anil no offense meant!)

[Gigaom]

OK - back to Marc....

So my last post was on all the obnoxious amount of money that Google has at it's disposal and how that money is actually making it's way out into the community, via 7 job listings for UI work at Google.

That's 7 new jobs people.

So I'm sitting here thinking "Damm" - I need a coprorate sponsor for my micro-content roadshow.

Let's see - something like:

floatidea.jpg

Or perhaps I could write Tucows on my chest - like Chris Pirillo offers. Either way it's clear that corporate sponsorships have come to the blogosphere.

The recent BlogON conference was an example of it. The whole thing started off with Mena and Ben Trott standing up and handing out awards for the best Moveable Type plug-in. Now I don't mind awards, or husband-wife teams airing their laundry, but the whole thing got a bit weird.

It was clear the next day that this conference was being run with different goals and agenda - then other conferences. There were all sorts of tables out in the hallway, with people hocking products or services. The agenda of the conference was very cut and dried, pre-packaged for investors and marketing people to understand.

But the worst thing were the peopel chosen to participate. Without naming names (AOL, Cnet, Yahoo - ooops :-) it was clear that certain companies got to appear - where perhaps they had never appeared before.

It was like "how much does it cost for us to participate in the blogosphere" kind of attitude. They were sitting up there - telling us how our industry was gonna evolve and I thought "damm, look what's happening!"

This is what corporate sponsored events are about. Giving companies - who pay - access to "customers" and influencers. Bought and paid for - just like any piece of meat or soda.

Or CD. Or Movie. Or piece of Art. Or sex. It's all about money - right?

So there's nothing wrong with Anil having a job or me hussling for sponsorships for my tour. It could be worse. You could be working for Yahoo, AOL or Microsoft and have to tow company line and try and believe in what they're doing.

Being an independent member of this world - means your rep is everything. We all respect Anil EVEN MORE now that his tunnel vision is making it clear where his bread is buttered. Right on for Anil!

And right on for anybody else who figures out how to stay OUTSIDE that corproate world and stay alive.

Staying creative in the Mac design world

Staying creative in the Mac design world 03/14/2005 04:22 PM
Working in the Macintosh design industry can be both inspiring and rewarding, but maintaining a solid stance in the increasingly competitive field takes the latest software and hardware, a creative mind, and artistic talent. Just as Mac users often show an incredible amount of enthusiasm for their computers, creative individuals show passion for their work. Being passionate about creative work also takes a certain amount of inspiration. So, how do design professionals stay inspired and maintain a creative outlook? Brian Brisebois is a Senior Art Director at a Minneapolis advertising agency and manages to stay creative by studying everything around him from a design aspect. "I constantly experiment in different styles, techniques and mediums... testing in different art forms gives new perspectives," Brisebois told Spymac. "I read several creative trade magazines, go to museums and don't go anywhere without my camera. Try to keep-up on applications as much as I can." Chicago designer and artist, Matt Maldre also tries to keep on top of what's new in the computer industry and art world. "It's just almost a standard to look through Print, CA, etc., but I just don't just look at the pretty pictures," Maldre says. "I try to read these magazines from cover to cover." Self-educated graphic/web designer and cartoonist, Thomas Michaud, has been working as a freelance or corporate employee on and off for 17 years and has maintained a creative outlook by carrying out different design work like drawing cartoons, designing clothing logos as well as doing freelance work. "I started out drawing political and strip cartoons for the The University Daily Kansan, at the University of Kansas, between 1988 and 1991 where I studied Political Science - with an English minor. After graduation, I moved onto t-shirt design and corporate newsletter layouts and then onto ad and catalog layouts. After moving to southwest Michigan, in 2001 to marry my wife, I've been working as an in-house graphic designer/illustrator and some video production for Lane Automotive, along with various freelance projects through my personal business IVfx." There are a number of things that Michaud says help him stay creative. "The first thing that helps me to stay creative is to just get away from all design for about a week or two - taking a vacation to just recharge my mind." With time off from design, Michaud enjoys reading, playing sports, video games, and working on his house and yard. To gain inspiration, he subscribes to design magazines and reads various blogs published by graphic and web designers. Some of Michaud's inspirational sites include Mike Davidson, Camron Moll, Jason Santa Maria, Netdiver, Core Industries Gallery, monc, HOW Design, Veer and Speak Up. Staying Alive: Robot Recharging 12/02/2003 12:23 AM
Boyoon Jung and other researchers at the USC Center for Robotic and Embedded System (CRES) have been studying the problem of how to keep robots alive for extended periods when they depend on batteries that last a finite amount of time. They have released a research paper (PDF format) that describes a method of allowing robots to become self-sustaining by autonomously recharging as needed. Their idea, not suprisingly, combines a docking station for recharging with power management software that allows the robot to intelligently decided when to interrupt other tasks for recharging. Boyoon's website includes video clips of their robot docking (AVI format) and busy at its normal sentry activity (AVI format).
