Scientist
Imagines Elevator Reaching 62,000 Miles Into Space: This seems so
wrong on so many levels.
President Bush wants to return to the moon and put a man on Mars.
But scientist Bradley C. Edwards has an idea that's really out of this
world: an elevator that climbs 62,000 miles into space.
Edwards thinks an initial version could be operating in 15 years, a
year earlier than Bush's 2020 timetable for a return to the moon. He
pegs the cost at $10 billion, a pittance compared with other space
endeavors.
Wikipedia has a
huge article on this concept, in which they say this:
A space elevator would present a considerable navigational
hazard, both to aircraft and spacecraft. Aircraft could be dealt with
[...], but spacecraft are a more difficult problem. Over a long period
of time all satellites with perigees below geostationary altitude
would eventually collide with the space elevator, as their orbits
precess around Earth.
Yeah, that sounds safe.

06/19/2004 04:53 PMI am quite excited about Mondays flight that if it succeeds will
result in a significant event in manned spaceflight. The first ever
successful private launch into space. I am sure their will be
Television coverage of the launch and being I am laid up in bed
recovering I will definitely be tuned in.
My dad who does not follow these types of things closely was even
aware of the launch and he posed a question to my Mom if she would pay
to go. Her answer was no but the speculated correctly that I would
jump at the chance. I am hoping that in my lifetime it will be
affordable to view the earth from space. This frontier has been
limited to the chosen ones and to think we are on the doorstep of
opening manned spaceflight to regular Joe's and Janes.
Some of you have read Science Fiction books where people travel to
other solar systems spending a lifetime doing so forever leaving the
bounds of earth. I wonder in my mind how far we are away from doing
this. I am sure someday someone will be asked to make the ultimate
sacrifice for the chance of a one way trip to the outer reaches of the
solar system. Obviously we have a long way to go in that propulsion
systems that have yet to be invented would be needed to push a
spacecraft to the velocities needed to achieve such a thing. Pushing
ones imagination you would have to raise children in space to continue
the mission as the original crew would never make it in a lifetime.
Probably to far fetched to consider but if the human race makes it
another 1000 years imagine the possibilities. [w

06/02/2004 01:36 PMScaled Composites, the X-Prize competitor funded by Microsoft mogul
Paul Allen, and led by aviation uber-genius Burt Rutan, has scheduled a test flight that, if successful, will be the first
space launch in history by the private sector.
SpaceShipOne will rocket to 100 kilometers (62 miles)
into sub-orbital space above the Mojave Civilian Aerospace Test
Center, a commercial airport in the California desert. If successful,
it will demonstrate that the space frontier is finally open to private
enterprise. This event could be the breakthrough that will enable
space access for future generations.
This flight won't qualify for the X-Prize since the prize
stipulates that you have to take 3 people to space, instead of just
one. It is likely, however, a preliminary flight to get ready for a
shot at the prize, and the precursor to commercial space travel. One
of the reasons that the Mojave Airport is on its way to being licensed
by the FTC as the world's first commercial spaceport. We have
spaceports now! My jet-pack and flying car must not be far
behind!

their own preferences and mood, while also blocking out certain
elements of the outside.
