There Is Another...Lightsaber
07/01/2004 10:11 PMFollowing up on a report from Rebelscum reader Caleb, I checked out my
local Target store today and came across another lightsaber in the
Original Trilogy Collection Role Play
assortment: Anakin Skywalker's Electronic Lightsaber. This is the same
toy that was released in the
Saga and
Clone Wars
assortments, only this time in the black-and-silver packaging without
the OTC logo. The basic lightsaber assortment was also hanging on the
pegs, with a simple black-and-silver
Star Wars logo.
Town Sold On eBay Not Really Sold
Town Sold On eBay Not Really Sold
12/29/2003 04:51 AMEarlier this month, I wrote about how it's become popular to use eBay
as not just a buying and selling platform, but also as a
PR
platform for such things as selling towns - because you're almost
guaranteed to get press coverage for selling something weird. Of
course, it looks like there might also be a downside. Last year, a
town in California received a ton of press for being put up on eBay,
after conventional attempts to sell it had failed. That press
coverage helped push up interest in the town until someone
"won"
the town with a bid of $1.8 million. Of course, as we pointed out
at the time, with many such high profile auctions, the top bid is
likely to be bogus. A few months after the original auction, it was
reported that
the
sale still hadn't been finalized. Now, exactly a year after the
original eBay auction happened, the folks who "own" the town are
admitting that
the buyer disappeared and
never sent a check. Even worse, the sellers then went down the
list of everyone else who bid on the town and failed to find a single
legitimate buyer. Thus, the town is back up for sale - but not on
eBay and at half the price of what they "sold" it for last year.

08/17/2004 09:33 PMIn reponse to
yesterday's
report of a second prequel lightsaber being released in the
Original Trilogy Collection Role Play
assortment, Rebelscum reader JediDaxter writes in to let us know that
he spotted
yet another weapon in his local Wal-Mart in Mount
Vernon, Illinois! This time it is Count Dooku's lightsaber. This is
the same toy that was released in the
Saga and
Clone Wars
assortments, only this time in the black-and-silver packaging without
the OTC logo. Can Mace Windu's lightsaber be far behind?

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AMBack in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville,
the small (mostly deserted) California town was
put up
for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8
million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only
problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and
the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that
the
buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has
been sold again -
but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking
price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go
through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on
eBay," contributing to the
use of
eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and
sellers.

I've sold out!
I've sold out!
02/10/2004 02:44 AMWhat can I say - the lure of the mighty dollar proved too much.
I've just made my first post to my new client-side scripting blog over at SitePoint, as a paid
columnist.
I'll answer the most obvious question straight away: I'm not going
to stop writing here. My SitePoint blog is a subject-focused blog
covering client-side web development - CSS, Javascript, HTML and their
role in modern web site creation. This blog will continue to host my
thoughts on other subjects - mainly server-side stuff, but also
general programming, web related rants and anything else that strikes
my interest. Oh, and bashing Microsoft, naturally ;)
I'm a big fan of strictly subject-driven blogs, so it's going to be
fun working on one right from the start. Lambda the Ultimate (programming
languages), Column
Two (content and knowledge management), the Daily Python-URL and
Adrian Holovaty's online journalism blog are all great examples of blogs
with a topical focus, and I hope to take my SitePoint blog in a
similarly focused direction.
Incidentally, the blogging system at SitePoint has only just been
launched and evidently there are still some issues to iron out. I
know the site doesn't validate, and I hope to work with
SitePoint to resolve some of the other markup and Javascript issues
I've spotted. I hope to write up some of the problems and solutions on
the blog itself in coming weeks.

McGraw Hill sold me out
McGraw Hill sold me out
04/16/2004 02:12 AM
Like everyone else on the internet, I get a fair amount of spam. I
tend to keep my main work as clean as possible, while skipping over
the spam in my lower-traffic personal account and cleaning it up every
week or so.
While cleaning out the latest batch, I noticed that a number of
undesirable emails had been delivered to an address which I had used
as a "spam trap" - I had only used it once when signing up for a
particular service. I ran a search for all messages sent to that
address and found this charming missive, dated March 15th:
As a subscriber to or customer of certain products and
services
published by The McGraw-Hill Companies, The McGraw-Hill List
Management
Center's commitment to you is to keep you current, by email, on
products
and services from third party (non-McGraw-Hill) advertisers that might
be of interest to you. Each email message will be preceded by the name
of the company offering the product or service, so that you know the
source and purpose of the email before opening it.
If you do not wish to receive these informative emails from The
McGraw-Hill Companies List Management Center, please follow this link
[-- link removed --]
You will be taken off of this list to receive email messages from
these
third party advertisers. It will not affect your status as a customer
of or subscriber to any McGraw-Hill product or service in any
manner.
They'd opted me in to their third party mailing list. Obviously I
would have hit the "I don't want your disgusting spam" link if I had
actually seen it, but the subject of the email was "++SPAM++ Special
Offers" (the ++SPAM++ part was added by my University's spam filter)
so naturally I had skipped straight over it assuming it was yet
another piece of worthless spam. I guess that's almost ironic.
In the month since receiving that email, I've had 12 unwanted
commercial emails sent to that address.
I'm usually very conscientious about ticking the "don't
ever, ever spam me" box when I sign up for things. Maybe I was less
vigilant than normal in this case, but I sincerely doubt it. The
service I had originally signed up for was a free trial of Zinio. I just checked the
registration form and it has two clearly labelled "you may send me
junk" boxes, which I'm certain I would have unchecked. I can only
conclude that they ignored my initial request, sent me an easily
missed "we're about to spam you" message and proceeded to fill my
inbox with garbage.
Maybe this kind of thing is covered by their privacy policy
(which I can't access at the moment as their site appears to be
unavailable). You know what? I didn't read their privacy policy. I
don't read privacy policys. I don't read EULAs either - heck, I don't
read anything that looks like it was written by a lawyer and is likely
to BREAK IN TO CAPITAL LETTERS at any moment. I assumed that checking
the "don't spam me" boxes was enough. Evidently my faith in basic
human decency let me down.
McGraw Hill: I'm
absolutely disgusted with you. Your behaviour in regards to bulk email
sickens me, and I will never again knowingly purchase one of your
products or support your business in any way.
Oh, and the final insult? They signed off their treacherous email
with Thank you for being a loyal McGraw-Hill customer.
Words
fail me.

06/09/2004 10:26 AMEuropean free software advocates, Green Party activists, Socialists,
economists, small business owners, and other radicals are working to
keep the European Union from instituting U.S.-style software patents.
But don't give up hope. The U.S. government and some of the biggest
U.S. software vendors are working to bring those backward Europeans
into the modern world, where software development can eventually be
limited to responsible companies instead of being done by any-old-body
with a computer and a good idea.
