All quiet on the western (European)
front

All quiet on the western (European)
front
08/29/2004 10:56 AM
Once again, I find myself writing on the eve of an Apple event, and as the exhibitors set up and the attendees arrive, I’m left to sit on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and speculate. However, while this should, by all means, be the most exciting event in recent recollection, it just doesn't seem to have the anticipation it should. Maybe it’s me, but the imminent release of a new iMac should be generating quite a bit more rumors and discussion that it has. The only related rumor came in the form of specs from Think Secret on Aug. 13, and if it hadn’t come from Apple itself, I wouldn’t even believe a new iMac was even on the horizon. I mean, this is a new iMac people… the computer that has consistently put Apple on the map and twice redefined personal computing as we know it. It’s a cultural icon, a household world; the only blip on the consumer desktop radar worth mentioning over the last few years. For the first time, Apple fans actually have something tangible to look forward to, and we’re speechless. So, maybe it’s all a trick. Maybe there’s no iMac coming Tuesday, and maybe Apple has pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes as Steve sits in a hospital somewhere watching it all. I mean, how many companies can make headlines by not releasing something? Seriously, though, the iMac is coming, and perhaps a few other surprises as well. For one, rumors have been popping up that a new iSight camera is due. Save the addition of a magnetic mount (so as to not muck up the new displays with sticky residue), the iSight hasn’t seen an update since its introduction last year. So what about this scenario: Phil Schiller takes the stage at 10 a.m. and begins the normal rundown of the iPod, iTunes and G5 stats, takes another look at Tiger and its new features, and introduces the new iSight to accompany the new iChat AV, walks over to a 2.5GHz G5, launches iChat, sets up his new higher-resolution iSight, and connects to a fully-recovered Steve Jobs at his home in California. And of course, Steve proceeds to unveil the new iMac. Or, Steve could simply walk out sometime in the middle of Phil’s presentation. Or. MacCentral could be wrong, and Steve’s actually prepping his speech as you read this. Whatever the case, it brings me back to my original question, which is why? Why hasn’t speculation been running rampant at Spymac? Sure, “The Official Spymac iMac Prediction Thread” has been running strong for some time now, but where are the wild rumors? Where’s the conspiracy theory and the search for specs? Is it me, or was more excitement for last year’s Bluetooth mouse!?!? With just 40 hours or so remaining, I’m still waiting for a rumor that’ll really get my attention — like the 17-inch PowerBook blurb from MacRumors just before MacWorld San Francisco in 2003; or (ahem) the iWalk hype before the iPod; or even the mock-ups of the first flat panel iMac. So, let’s get going people! Are we gonna let Apple taken the fun out of pre-expo supposition by telling us what’s coming? Are we gonna take that?
