Villette Numérique in Paris

Villette Numérique in Paris

Villette Numérique in Paris 09/21/2004 05:03 AM

David Pescovitz: The Villette Numérique digital art extravaganza starts tomorrow in Paris. It's an intense two-week program of international tech/culture exhibitions, performances, workshops, concerts, and films.

bondageDozens of artists including Atau Tanaka (image at left), JoDI, Greg Niemeyer/Chris Chafe, and Maclej Wisnlewski will present new work in the "Zone de Confluences." BB's Parisian liaison Alexandre Boucherot and his colleagues from Fluctuat.net are acting as mediators of the media art, providing insight into the pieces for visitors to the exhibition. I'm also looking forward to Sigur Rós's Odin's Raven Magic, an adaptation of Icelandic sagas backed by a full orchestra. Tomorrow night, experimental musicians Scanner and Simon Fisher Turner will twist knobs in a planetarium, and this weekend we'll catch a performance of Stockhausen's Mantra.

If you're in the vicinity, now is a good time to catch an easyJet flight. Hit the Villette Numérique site for background on all the artists mentioned above and plenty of more information worth a look even if you can't make it to Paris. Link

When next in Paris

When next in Paris 03/14/2005 05:38 PM
From the New York Times travel section comes this nice article extolling the virtues of the ninth arrondissement: In Paris, the Rue des Martyrs Is a Slice of Village Life. I don't think I've explored that area before, so I'm going to put it on my list of sites to see when I'm in Paris in April.

My Paris picture set

My Paris picture set 04/04/2005 08:32 AM
For those that read megnut.com through a news reader, you may be missing my photos from Paris that I've been posting to the site via Flickr. If you want to follow along on my adventures, you can check out my Flickr photo set, April in Paris 2005. So far there aren't a lot of photos, but as I wander the streets, I'll take more. They're all from my phone, so the quality isn't great. As I get (hopefully) better photos from my digital camera, I'll post those as well.

The best chocolate in Paris

The best chocolate in Paris 12/19/2004 03:21 PM
From the Sunday New York Times comes this delicious article, In Paris, Boutiques and Cafes Where Chocolatiers Raise the Bar. Herewith, then, a guide to Paris for the chocolate aficionado. It is by no means exhaustive; the Paris phone book has several pages of listings for chocolatiers, but I think this represents a selection of those most worthy of your time. It contains a good listing of the top spots in the city. Closer to home, if your home happens to be New York City, is the Chocolate Bar. Oddly enough, I've never visited this place, even though it's so close to my house. When I first moved to NYC, I assumed I'd go here regularly, and yet it's never happened. Perhaps this afternoon I'll pay them a visit. All this reading and thinking about chocolate has made me hungry!

Five restaurants in Paris

Five restaurants in Paris 01/22/2004 02:19 PM

The NY Times had an article the other day about Comfort Food at Comforting Prices in Paris. While all five spots sound delicious, I'm especially tempted by Le Petit Pontoise if only because it's located on rue de Pontoise, the location of my mother's first apartment, rented for her 1996 sabbatical.

[O]n a recent visit, there was a wood crate filled with freshly gathered girolle mushrooms. It's the season, and the mushrooms were too tempting not to order. Quickly sautéed so that they remained juicy and slightly chewy, they were perfectly accented with garlic and parsley.

I'm really longing for a trip to Paris, it's been just long enough (seven months) that I'm missing it very much, especially since my favorite mittens from La Samaritaine got a hole in the thumb! I mean, I could replace my mittens here in NYC, but somehow French mittens seem superior, certainly these ones are, except for their hole.

Something you loved in Paris

Something you loved in Paris 04/09/2005 07:53 AM
It's hard to believe one quarter of my time here in Paris has passed already. I don't feel like I've even begun to do all the things I want, never mind the things I don't know I should be doing! Before it's too late, I'd like to hear some recommendations for interesting things you've done or experienced in Paris (or France, for that matter, if I could find the same wine in Paris, etc.). Is there a little restaurant you loved? An amazing unpasteurised milk cheese you tasted once? A small store that sold lovely little things? Something you just don't think I should miss while I'm here? Comments are open, share what you will. Thanks!

Paris in April

Paris in April 04/14/2005 10:32 AM

So, I'm in Paris for a few days. It's a pseudo-vacation of sorts, but I'm keeping up with the site while I'm here as well. I've had the chance to get out with my camera the last couple of days, something I always enjoy doing here. It feels like cheating in a way...it's so easy to take good photos here. Anyway, here's a selection from the last two days:

Photos of Paris in April

The above photo (larger version) is one my favorite photos from the past few months. I was walking around in the Jardin Des Tuileries, saw him reading by the fountain, and just knew I'd found a good picture. I imagine actual photographers get that feeling all the time, but it was a new one for me. Hopefully I'll find a few more good ones for another one or two selections while I'm here.

Other memories of Paris

Other memories of Paris 06/05/2005 11:56 PM

Remembrance of Things ParisLike a lover who, after the affair has ended, desperately revisits old letters and photos to hold onto the magic, I cannot stop reading about Paris! I ordered Remembrance of Things Paris: Sixty Years of Writing from Gourmet, edited by Ruth Reichl, while I was in Paris so it would await me upon my return. I've been reading the short articles whenever I have a few minutes break, and it's bringing it all back. What's even more amazing is how many of the spots I know -- and the articles I'm reading were written shortly after WWII! But the streets, cafés, restaurants, and hangouts are all still the same. At least it assures me that when I do return, I'll be able to enjoy many of the same things. As this enjoyable book demonstrates, Paris sure has continuity going for it!

Yay!! Red Sox in Paris. I know, it's a terrible photo but I really couldn't get a better photo of the TV. But the bar, if you need to know, is: The Highlander Pub, 8, rue des Nevers, 6° Paris. They will show the rest of the Sox games, as long as they don't conflict with Scottish Football. And yes, we won. Finally. It's a long season, but this was a very good win. :)

Studying French in Paris

Studying French in Paris 06/05/2005 11:56 PM

As many of you know, while I was in Paris last month I took French classes. I searched online for a schools and was overwhelmed by the Google results. Then the first day I was in Paris, I was reading an ex-pat's blog (he too was in Paris) and he mentioned studying at the Alliance Française. The next day, I headed over there, took a placement test, paid my fee, and got my student id. Sure, I could have done more research, but somehow, this just felt right, so I went with it.

I signed up for two hours a day, four days a week. The off day (which is the same for all courses), the Alliance offers cultural outings for students. From the very first day, I loved my class. Our teacher (Madame was what I called her, as her last name was complicated to pronounce and using her first name seemed too casual) was wonderful. Fluent in French, English, and Spanish, she also seemed to speak Chinese and Russian when the moment arose. She spent time talking about French culture and history in addition to grammar and vocabulary.

The class size was about twenty people, but it didn't present too much of a problem, and Madame made sure we all had opportunities to speak aloud (during which time she'd correct our pronunciation) both within small groups and to the whole class.

I really enjoyed it, and my classmates, and was very sad on the last day, especially since the rest of my group was continuing together with our teacher in Paris, and I was returning to the States. I learned a lot and felt that my French really improved a great deal, to the point that I could understand a lot of what was said to me, and could (in most situations at least) make myself understood.

Based on my limited experience, I'd definitely recommend taking classes at the Paris Alliance Française. I certainly plan to return to Paris, and when I do, I'll sign up for more classes there again.
