Crown Castle Selects Windows Media
Deliver TV Via Mobile
04/18/2005 04:38 PM
Crown Castle Mobile Media, a subsidiary of Crown Castle International Corp., and Microsoft Corp. today announced that Crown Castle Mobile Media has selected Windows Media Audio, Windows Media Video 9 and Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) 10 for its Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) broadcast service deployment. As a preview of the exciting possibilities this relationship will deliver, Crown Castle Mobile Media will be demonstrating with Microsoft live mobile TV on Windows Mobile (TM) -based devices at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas from April 16 to April 21, 2005.

Windows Media helps enable the secure delivery of high-quality digital entertainment services over IP and other digital networks. The components of the Windows Media 9 Series platform are available from Microsoft in source code format, may be ported to mobile devices based on any operating system, and are licensed under published terms that provide significant commercial advantages for device manufacturers compared with alternative solutions. Windows Media Video 9 is Microsoft's implementation of VC-1, the proposed Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) standard.

"Windows Media is a superb solution for delivering audio and video services over mobile broadcast networks like DVB-H because of its quality and efficiency," said Michael Schueppert, president of Crown Castle Mobile Media. "We are excited to work with Microsoft on this endeavor."

Ford Fusion Web Site

Ford Fusion Web Site 03/22/2005 04:31 PM

Ford mines consumers' wants: This is pretty brilliant. Ford is using a Web site to let people outfit fantasy Fusions — a new sedan coming next year. But they're not just throwing away the data.

It's an attempt to more closely align consumer demand with actual production, which often can be difficult.

The company is letting virtual shoppers build their own Fusions on the Web, including pricing options and picking colors. At the end, people are asked to fill out a survey giving their thoughts on what else they'd like to see on the cars.

So if 60% of the people make fake Fusions in the color blue, guess what color the majority of real Fusions will be?

The War Against Cold Fusion. Are our scientists selling us short? Is there a conspiracy? Are we addicted to large, expensive and ungainly projects? Are our scientists blinded by the almighty dollar, the grandiose, the overtly kinetic?

If it seems too simple or too good to be true, are we even capable of accepting proof if it isn't? Is free - well, almost free - a dirty word? Are we getting screwed in the interest of profits yet again?

Of Cold Fusion And Perfect DRM

Of Cold Fusion And Perfect DRM 04/19/2005 11:06 AM
It's funny how every year or so, some company comes out with a claim that it has created the absolute perfect copy protection system that works perfectly every time, preventing unauthorized copying, but allowing authorized playback. The latest such claim comes along with amusing boasts such as its ability to "wipe out" file sharing. Beyond the fact that most content companies (despite their claims) don't want to wipe out file sharing, there simply is no way to make a perfect copy protection system. If the content needs to be seen, listened to or read, then there will be a way to make a copy and get it on a file sharing system. It's that simple. Of course, we're dealing with industries that seem to have no problems whatsoever in exaggerating claims -- so perhaps it's normal. Next thing you know, we'll find out that these firms are working on cold fusion and perpetual motion machines.

Fusion research is generally considered something of a pseudo-science in some circles as almost every major announcement in the field is later disproven or made highly questionable when the results weren't reproducible. However, some researchers won't give up, and some are saying that, while it may still be early, some of the experiments are showing reproducible results, suggesting that there may actually be something to the theories. After so many people have been burned by cold fusion claims, it makes sense to remain skeptical for now, but maybe the science isn't as pseudo as some believed.

Cold Fusion versus PHP

Cold Fusion versus PHP 02/17/2003 08:07 AM
Cold Fusion versus PHP I just picked up some work (Pro Bono; sigh but for a good cause) doing Cold Fusion work and this resource (albeit quite dated) helped me wrap my head around it. It is also STILL the top resource for "PHP versus Cold Fusion" via Google which is quite impressive for a 2 12 year old technology article on web development. Testament to Google's ranking of weblogged content. [_Go_]
