You've Got Dust... Networks

You've Got Dust... Networks 09/20/2004 05:07 PM

For quite some time, we've been hearing various stories about "smart dust" with most of the talk coming from Dust Networks. After all this time, they've finally launched a product. It's clearly nowhere near the "smart dust" level yet, but looks to be a wireless mesh networking technology for letting a variety of sensors communicate easily, without killing batteries too quickly. Still, it's a big step forward for the space, meaning we should expect plenty of gushing news stories about the technology in the near future.

Gridlogix, Inc., a leading creator of enabling interoperable XML Web Services technology today announced enhanced support for Dust Networks’ SmartMesh™ wireless sensor network. SmartMesh is a wireless mesh sensor network used in remote monitoring and control. The Gridlogix EnNET® XML Web Service application extends the functionality of the SmartMesh system to include robust protocol translation between the wireless mesh network and other automation protocols and systems. EnNET translates the SmartMesh wireless protocol into BACnet/IP, SNMP, and LonWorks® allowing Dust Networks’ wireless sensor network to be seamlessly integrated with existing automation networks. Pervasive networks—a ubiquitous “fabric” of computing, information, entertainment, and telemetry capability tied together by high-speed wired and wireless networks—are emerging from a flurry of new communication technologies now being used in home and office networks. Though communications carriers do not offer this type of continuous communication as a service today, the piece parts are already in place. [PRWEB Dec 20, 2004]

The city of Salinas, CA has decided to address budget concerns by cutting a number of services*. Most surprising, though, is the decision to raise ~$7Mil. (or 2, depending on the PDF) by clo sing all of the libraries* (hey, at least they're not burning novels) in a town whose population is mostly Hispanic.
Reminds me of that bumper sticker: "Welcome to America: Learn English."
Which begs the question; Where?

New Scientist.com says that the robotic space probe StarDust survives daring comet fly-by. StarDust flew through the tail of comet Wild-2 and was pelted with bullet fast rocks and survived! The Stardust mission in addition to catching minute partices of the coment in its aerogel tennis racket- like mitten, it also took some great photos of comet Wild-2. Now that Stardust has captured some comet particles, it is now on its long journey home with its payload to land in the Utah desert (yes, back to Earth) sometime in 2006. Hopefully, StarDust will survive the landing. Also, don't forget that tomorrow, hopefully, we'll find out of the Spirit Rover survived Mars!

Researchers at the University of Calgary have built a tele-operated fingerprinting system for bomb disposal robots. Typically, the only way to grab prints from an explosive device after a 'bot blows it up is to search through the detritus. The new system sprays a jet of superglue fumes at the supsicious package. According to a New Scientist article, "the superglue vapour reacts with the organic fingerprint deposits to form a conspicuous white polymer" that can be photographed using the remote camera before the bomb, and often the robot, are blown to bits.
