part of Hewlett-Packard's effort to gain a competitive advantage

Hewlett-Packard endorsement, analysts say, is also a sign that open

Cheap Computing and Open Source Movement
Reduce Software Costs By 90% For Small
Business.
01/05/2005 03:13 AMSmall Businesses who want enterprise software such as CRM (Customer
Relationship Management), Project Management, and eLearning have
typically been ignored by the software industry. Change is coming,
however, and it may be the software makers themselves who end up
feeling left out. With abundant and cheap computing power and new
feature-rich Open Source Business applications, small businesses can
now bypass commercial software altogether. With Managed Application
Service providers filling the technological gap, small businesses can
digitize key parts of their operations without making large
investments in consultants, hardware, or software licensing. [PRWEB

Metadot Portal
Server is a leading open source portal system. Its revolutionary ease
of use allows non technical people to create very powerful websites
and portals just with the clicks of a mouse. Its architecture makes
it extremely easy to customize and deploy. It is available for free
under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It provides
collaboration, content management, as well as My News Page (like My
Yahoo) and online database applications. Typically it is used to
create web portals, intranets, extranets, organization and project
websites. When it was first released in April 2000, it revolutionized
the way complex websites are built by giving easy-to-use tools to
non-technical users allowing them to create powerful database-backed
websites without having to involve a webmaster or the IT department!
It runs primarily on Linux, Apache, MySQL and Perl and supports also
commercial environments like Sun Solaris, Windows OSes and Oracle
database. It is available for free and it can be downloaded
here.

Slow?
Is Microsoft Moving Too Fast Or Too
Slow?
05/03/2004 03:50 AMMicrosoft just can't win. After taking quite a beating (deservedly
so) for their software's flaws, when they decide to stop pumping out
new operating systems at the same rapid pace that caused many of those
flaws, they get
criticized for
moving too slowly. It wasn't that long ago that similar articles
were screaming for Microsoft to stop just releasing new operating
systems every few years and, instead, focus on fixing what's already
released. That's basically what they're trying to do (successfully or
not), and the thanks they get are people trashing them for taking so
long to get their next operating system out. I don't think there
should be any rush for them to get Longhorn out, if they can actually
get XP working better. People don't
need to jump operating
systems every two years.
