Gartner: Microsoft Security Improving
Gartner: Microsoft Security Improving
02/10/2004 12:13 PMA recent Gartner report corroborates what industry observers have
known for months: Microsoft's security initiatives are paying off for
the software giant, and as customers move to more modern Windows
versions such as Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, they will
participate in the benefits as well. Gartner did, however, hedge its
bets by chiding Microsoft for blaming many of its security compromises
on those who write malicious code, perhaps in a bid to make its
otherwise glowing report on Microsoft security seem less one-sided.
The report is also careful to cast Microsoft's security improvements
in guarded terms.

Gartner: Ignore Standards for Web
Services Security.
11/13/2003 07:42 PM"Gartner advises firms to rely on vendor-provided technology to
provide security for web services-based transactions until 2006, even
though it may not comply with standards."
But IMO, the decision isn't that straightforward. After all, look at
Google and Amazon.com, both of whom offer web services which cross
organizational boundaries and use relatively little security. Okay, so
these aren't business-process web services, but my point is that there
are many classes of web services that can be deployed today without
the need for complex proprietary security solutions. At the same time,
I have to say that the Gartner report is probably about right, that it
will be 2-3 years until one can find a fully standardized security
stack based on WS-Security and its add-ons that is sufficient to
support complex web services which cross security domains. [Source:

Optimistic Gartner Report
02/18/2004 01:17 PMGartner says that the number of hotspot users worldwide will grow to
30 million in 2004, up from 9.3 million in 2003: The firm warns that
companies should take control of how their workers pay for the
service, recommending contracts rather than one day usage fees.
Managed service providers like iPass, FiberLink, and GRIC will be good
solutions for companies. It goes on to say that alliances, mergers,
and acquisitions will be prevalent in the second half of the year.
Most of the recommendations in the report seem to point to the lack of
unity in the market. Today, companies must sign up for service with
multiple operators to get access to the most hotspots. More roaming
and interconnection deals will likely encourage more use by heavy
travelers....
