The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora --
upcoming book
09/20/2004 02:37 PM

Mark Frauenfelder: I'm waiting to get my copy of "The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora," a new book coming out from Fantagraphics. Flora was a record album cover illustrator in the 1940s and 1950s. I discovered him about 15 years ago when I bought a Benny Goodman record with a Flora cover at a garage sale for $1. Finding this illustration reconfigured my brain.

Here's a good description of Flora's style (from the back cover of the book):

floraVintage music buffs have long been bedazzled by bizarre, cartoonish album covers tagged with the signature "Flora." In the 1940s and '50s, James (Jim) Flora designed dozens of diabolic cover illustrations, many for Columbia and RCA Victor jazz artists. His designs pulsed with angular hepcats bearing funnel-tapered noses and shark-fin chins, who fingered cockeyed pianos and honked lollipop-hued horns. In the background, geometric doo-dads floated willy-nilly like a kindergarten toy room gone anti-gravitational. He wreaked havoc with the laws of physics, conjuring up flying musicians, levitating instruments, and wobbly dimensional perspectives. Yet Flora's wondrous, childlike exuberance was subverted by a sinister tinge of the grotesque. As Flora confessed in a 1998 interview, "I got away with murder, didn't I?"

There's a nice Flora art gallery online, which is maintained by Irwin Chusid, who compiled the book for Fantagraphics.

thecatFantagraphics also published a book by one of my other main influences, Gene Deitch, called The Cat on a Hot Thin Groove. He did the covers for a jazz fanzine in the 1940s, called The Record Changer. In the '60s, Deitch was the art director for UPA, the cartoon studio that produced Gerald McBoingBoing. ABout 10 years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Deitch in his San Francisco home (He lives most of the year in Prague). He drew a great picture of his jazz character, The Cat, for me and presented it to me. I interviewed him for the print edition of bOING bOING, but I never got around to transcribing the tape. I hope I still have it.

blairOne of my other big influences, Disney Artist Mary Blair, got her own book this year too! (Illustrator Bob Staake has a couple of pages with Blair's art.)

Now, all I need to round out my library of illustrator-gods are books about the work of Tom Oreb and Ed Benedict.

Dark Horse reveals more details of upcoming issues of Star Wars: Republic, detailing more battles in the Clone Wars. Obi-Wan Kenobi is presumed dead, but is actually locked away with Alpha in Asaj Ventress' hidden base. In the meantime, Anakin gets a new master, Quinlan vos descends further into the dark side, and more teasers for Clone Wars Adventures and Jedi: Yoda are promised. And in a follow-up to last week's report, it looks as if the Star Wars: Countdown series has been canceled, although elements of the story may find their way into the Republic series. Jim Flora in the New York Times

Jim Flora in the New York Times 12/30/2004 12:22 AM
Mark Frauenfelder: I've written about my favorite illustrator, the late Jim Flora, several times on Boing Boing. I'm happy to see that the New York Times has an article him, and his influence on today's artists.
Images 2004 12 30 Arts 30Flor.184 "I came across his work in 1993," said Michael Bartalos, a San Francisco-based illustrator who was among the first to locate Flora. "Our styles were very similar - strangely similar, actually - but after I met him I was even more influenced." Among the other prominent artists and illustrators today who are strongly influenced by Flora's art are Tim Biskup, Gary Baseman, J. D. King and Melinda Beck, who all wrote appreciations for Mr. Chusid's book, each praising his effortlessly jazzy spirit. Gene Deitch, a contemporary of Flora's, admits that through the 40's and 50's he was "brazenly imitating his style."

hitachi_mx1.jpg imageHitachi has announced a new Japanese PDA called the FLORA-ie MX1, a 400MHz Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003SE. The most stand-out feature of the MX1 is definitely the Zaurus-like slide-out keyboard which is certain to make it lusted after by many Western Pocket PC fans, who have been privy to integrated keyboards before, but nothing quite the same. As a big fan of the Zaurus form factor (and less so the Linux environment it runs) I'd say it's a pretty appealing design. I hope Hitachi considers bringing it to the US.

It's beefy, too, with a 4-inch VGA screen, built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and SD and CF slots—everything a Windows pocket-sagger should be.

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

Upcoming Blogging and RSS Presentations

Upcoming Blogging and RSS Presentations 01/07/2004 04:55 PM

If you're in the Chicagoland area, here are two events at which I'll be speaking during the next two months. If you've heard me talk about blogging and/or RSS, there won't be much new here, but if you want to make a New Year's resolution for your library or for yourself (as in, find out why news aggregators are so great), come on by because they're both free!

  1. A Blogging Overview with Jenny Levine
    A Reference Librarian (RLA) Program
    Tuesday, January 20
    9:30 AM - 12:00 PM

"Exactly what is a blog? Why are blogs rapidly growing? How can blogs be used to promote library communications and services?

Come hear Jenny Levine, Internet Development Specialist at the Suburban Library System and creator of the very popular Shifted Librarian blog www.theshiftedlibrarian.com give a comprehensive overview and update on blogs. Information maven and innovator Levine will talk about the advantages and practical applications of blogs in the library."

  2. How to Use RSS to Know More and Do Less
    SLS Tech Summit
    Thursday, February 19
    1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

"RSS, also known as Rich Site Summary, is an XML format that allows syndication of Web content. But what does that really mean? Learn how to use a news aggregator to read multiple sites to keep current while reducing the strain of your workload. Learn how news aggregators help you beat information overload and keep you more informed at the same time! In addition, you can start providing RSS syndication of your own news for your library's patrons."

Upcoming events in Keene, NH 03/22/2005 05:12 PM
In the fall of 2003, the Many-to-Many blog announced Andy Baio's upcoming.org, a collaborative event calendar. Ray Ozzie noticed, and asked a bunch of questions about calendar formats and mechanisms for syndicating and aggregating events. I weighed in with some examples of the XHTML microcontent techniques that I was (and still am) exploring. But eighteen months later it's clear that we were just philosophers debating how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. None of our arcane technical discussions really mattered because upcoming.org hasn't gone viral the way del.icio.us did. This isn't just my own observation. Recently someone in Edinburgh asked: "Why is upcoming.org not more popular?" ...

On April 11th I’ll be doing a “Keynote Debate” with Jean Paoli and Jon Udell at the Gilbane Content Management Technologies conference (what a long name). Some of the press coverage is trying to spin this as a “My office XML is better than yours” debate, which seems lame to me, there’s plenty to debate about the right way to put markup to work without getting into boring product specifics.

Upcoming events of note

Upcoming events of note 06/03/2004 09:56 PM
June is always a time that's slightly crazed for me (in a good way): it's the month when I celebrate both my birthday and my wedding anniversary; plus it's solstice time, when the days are longest and (for light-seeking souls like me) spirits highest. It's also the period, in the trough between Memorial Day and the start of high vacation season, when lots of events get planned. Here's some that are on my horizon: This Sunday I'm heading off to the Wall Street Journal's "D" Conference, run by Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg -- featuring, among others, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Last year, I understand they shared a stage (I wasn't there to confirm the executive convergence). We'll see if that tradition continues.

Next Friday, the same Long Now Foundation series that hosted Brian Eno's amazing talk last fall will present Bruce Sterling, at Fort Mason in San Francisco. If you've ever heard Sterling's seemingly free-associational -- but really, I'm convinced, carefully choreographed -- riffing, you know it's a treat. The topic? "The Singularity: Your Future as a Black Hole."

Last year, the Digital Storytelling Festival in Sedona was a blast. I can't make it to this year's event -- June 10-12, in Sedona once more -- but it promises to be even better, with J.D. Lasica talking about his "DarkNet" project and lots of other folks presenting their work.

Finally, Supernova returns to the Bay Area June 24-25. A year and a half ago, Kevin Werbach's first conference served as a great intro to the issues around Wi-Fi, Web services, and other grassroots-driven, geek-centered technologies whose adoption has begun to fuel a new wave of Silicon Valley buzz. It'll be interesting to see where Werbach takes these subjects now that it has begun to move from the edge to the mainstream.

On RSS feeds and upcoming redesigns... 04/12/2005 06:26 AM

This is more of an update than a post and won't be of enormous interest to an awful lot of you, I'm sure. Basically for those of you reading this site via an RSS newsreader, I've decided to remove the splicing of photographs from my Flickr photostream. This is for a number of reasons, but mainly because I've started to feel a bit uncomfortable about the enormous shifts in tone between the two feeds and how they inter-relate to one another. If you enjoy seeing pictures from my photostream however, you can still subscribe to a dedicated feed.

For those of you who are not familiar with the plasticbag.org feed, or with newsreaders in general, then I can recommend the Wikipedia article on RSS and newsreaders and if you're using a Mac, then NetNewsWire remains the client of choice.

This little job is just the first of a large number of changes that you should be seeing around the site over the next few weeks as I work to redesign the place from the ground-up. I can warn you now that many of you are not going to like what I'm going to do with the place. I'm taking it very stark and simple. But I'm finding it quite exciting. If you're of the speculative sort, then why not have a look at my page on a design history of plasticbag.org and see if you can spot the trends.

Upcoming US Phones Roundup 08/02/2004 10:25 AM

If you have a hard time keeping track of which phones have been released, which ones you should be keeping an eye out for, and which ones you really don't care about (and Lord knows, it's hard), MobileTracker has a wide (if shallow) round-up of some of North America's upcoming phones, including old favorites like the MPx and some just-released (if not widely) units like the Motorola A630. Not a bad place to catch up if you've been out of the scene for a little while (or, you know, tried to be in the scene, then gotten all flummoxed. It happens, booboo.)

On my upcoming trip to San Francisco...

On my upcoming trip to San Francisco... 06/17/2005 03:22 PM

So here's the plan - I'm flying to San Francisco on Saturday and I'll be hanging around until the 26th with all my geek hipster friends. But don't take that to mean that I'm busy all the time - I'm keen as ever to see (and meet) as many neat people as possible. When I go to San Francisco, I normally try and set up some kind of drunken evening at the Tonga Room - because the rain and the thunder and the tiki stylings and the lounge act are all so cool. But I am also aware that the cocktails are terrible and that maybe I've milked the experience as much as I can. So, guys, does anyone have any better ideas?

While I'm at it, I might as well put out another call - are there any glorious geek events, any particularly cool exhibitions or bars that I'd regret not going to? It's not every day I get a full week in my spiritual homeland to reconnect with the mothership. So what should I be doing?

Of course, no trip comes without its inconveniences, and this one is particularly poignant - while I'm on the flight to SFO I'll be missing the big reveal in the final episode of Doctor Who. This is doubly galling since I'm currently enduring hundreds of lunatic comments on my Doctor Who and Bad Wolf post. Regular visitors to the site may be getting bored of hearing about this, but things are way out of control - the post has received seven hundred comments as of now, and sometimes they come in at the rate of one or two a minute. The whole thing's starting to remind me of Kottke's famous Matrix meltdown. All of which is a roundabout way of saying don't spoil it for me until I've got my hands on a copy.

Anyway, as of this evening, I'm either in pre-flight limbo or stuck in some terminal interzone, and I'm hoping to take the opportunity to catch up with all the notes and writing I've been doing recently but haven't had a chance to post to my site. So more later...
