Sony Corp. has unveiled its first hard-disk drive-based digital music player to bear the Walkman name. The device was launched on Thursday as the Walkman brand marked its 25th anniversary. The NW-HD1 features a 20GB hard-disk drive and is, according to the company, the smallest music player at this capacity. It measures 89 millimeters by 62.1 millimeters by 13.8 millimeters and weighs 110 grams. The capacity is half that of Apple Computer Inc.'s highest capacity iPod, but Sony says its player trumps Apple's in terms of the number of songs it can store: 13,000 on the Walkman versus 10,000 on the iPod.

I'm in the process of reverting to a default Movable Type template because I can't stand the fact that my site is illegible in any Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox browser. No one seems to be able to translate Radio templates into MT ones so I'll lose the cool design Bryan Bell created for TSL, but I'd rather have you able to read the content.

I also hate the fact that I can't get my YACCS comments code to display no matter what I do. Based on the MT comments horror stories I've heard, I'm reluctant to go that route. So after a search to resolve the YACCS and MT issue turned up nothing, I'm asking for help from anyone that has successfully gotten the two to play nice together. If you are such a person, HELP! Email or IM links are on the right-hand side of the page. ANY help is much appreciated!

Another batch of ongoing housekeeping. I added a search field up and to your right, which just outsources the problem to Google. Eventually there’ll be something with an ongoing look coming out of this. Also I fixed a long-standing bug in the date display, which convinced me the whole date-hierarchy subsystem was basically broken so I re-did it, check it out. Quite likely I broke something, if so let me know, my email address is on the front page of a Google search for my name. Also, IE6 was refusing to render ' properly for reasons I couldn’t figure out, so I skated around that.

We've already written two different stories about Marty Pichinson, the "dot com cleanup guy" who made quite a name for himself after the bubble burst in shutting down and liquidating failed dot coms. Now that the economy seems to be picking up, you might think that Marty is looking for a new line of work, but he believes that things couldn't be better in the liquidation business as he's quite sure that there are a large number of "walking dead" companies that aren't going anywhere. In fact, he recently moved from LA to Palo Alto since he expects to be quite busy in Silicon Valley over the next few years. I'd bet he's also smelling the latest dot com bubble, and expecting that it will pop soon.

While on vacation I read Forever: A Novel by Pete Hamill. It was The Count of Monte Cristo meets Interview with the Vampire, which sounds cheesier than it was. It was perfect beach reading, and I enjoyed a great deal of it. It got me so much more curious about the City's history and made me more determined than ever to dig into Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898.

Perhaps the most interesting bit for me was actually after the book. My edition contained an interview with the author in which he talked about completing the book on September 10, 2001. And then of course, needing to go back and re-write a good chunk of the end. After all, his protagonist had supposedly experienced all of Manhattan's major events from about 1740 on. I imagine the process must have been difficult for Mr. Hamil. The "present day" world where his novel ended no longer existed, and ceased to exist the morning after he put down his pen.
