Microsoft Office 2003 offers self
destructing documents

Microsoft Office 2003 offers self
destructing documents
10/29/2003 01:16 AM
According to an article in NewScientist.com: Office 2003 features new versions of Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint, along with various usability tweaks and new functionality. But the software also comes with the ability to let users control the way other people use the documents they create. This can be used to prevent other people forwarding, copying or even printing a protected email message or document. "It should work," says Simson Garfinkel, a computer forensics expert at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). '"But it could be defeated by a hostile user. There's no way you could prevent someone from taking a digital picture of the screen." ... The rights control feature in Office 2003 depends on having an intermediary computer system with Windows Server 2003 and a software package called Rights Management Service installed. A protected email message sent between two users is encrypted and the recipient's version of Outlook will check with the server to see if the user is allowed to edit, copy or forward the message. A time-stamp can also be applied to make the message unreadable after a certain date. While I suspect that people will quickly figure out how to break this first generation DRM with the equivalent of a magic marker or using the shift key, and of course the expired documents will still be on the (Windows) server, this is probably a pretty good indicator of where governments and corporations are headed, and Microsoft has a history of successfully iterating products. While others debate DRM, Microsoft is creating facts on the ground. Not an encouraging development....

Office Source Code

Office Source Code 09/21/2004 01:11 AM
I’ve been trying to think of something intelligent and new to say about Microsoft’s recent Office source code maneuver, but Simon Phipps took care of it. Anyhow, when it comes to Office software, I’m less interested in its code (source or object) which should be disposable and replaceable, than I am in its output. Some call them “office documents”; I prefer “intellectual heritage”, “racial memory”, “crystallized thought”, “priceless treasure”, that kind of thing. They need to be taken care of better than they are, I think, and others agree.

The Data Assistant for Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2003 provides an easy-to-use method of inserting and managing graphical data objects such as Visio drawings, and Excel charts and named ranges into PowerPoint presentations. There are three basic features for the tool: inserting graphical data objects into PowerPoint, saving graphical data objects for future use, and retrieving saved graphical data objects for reuse. Because the Data Assistant creates a connection between PowerPoint and the host application of the data object (Excel or Visio), you have the option of inserting the data object as it was saved or refreshing it to reflect any changes that were made to the data object.

As a reminder to our readers, we are repeating the same advice we published in 2000, the last time Microsoft's source code was compromised. Don't look at it or you could contaminate yourself legally: The Wall Street Journal reported today [October 27, 2000 -- Ed.] that Microsoft and the FBI are investigating an intrusion in which unknown attackers had access to Microsoft source code for three months. Although nothing purporting to be Microsoft source code copied in the intrusion has surfaced yet, any such code poses a legal risk to people who read it and to any free software project that accepts contributions from those people.

Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of two new Office 2003 Business Intelligence (BI) Accelerators, the Microsoft® Office Business Scorecards Accelerator and the Microsoft Office Excel Add-in for SQL Server (TM) Analysis Services. Designed for and built on the Microsoft Office System and Windows Server System (TM) , the Office BI Accelerators provide customers and partners with increased access to data that is critical to maximizing business performance. Information workers and industry partners can also use the accelerators to assess performance in real time and reshape strategy and redeploy resources as market conditions change, staying one step ahead of their competition. To work through this demonstration, you need Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003. With Visual Studio .NET, we use the wizards to build a simple, custom Microsoft Windows service that launches Cassini, a managed code Web server that is described in the article, on the local computer. This Web server hosts the research provider consumed by the research task pane in Office 2003 editions. The code samples are provided in Microsoft Visual C# development language.

Microsoft to share Office code

Microsoft to share Office code 09/20/2004 10:44 AM
Reuters reports that Microsoft has announced plans to open up the code to their Office suite. Microsoft will share the code with 30 world governments, allowing them to inspect it for security problems. The announcement is part of a wider "Microsoft's Government Security Program" launched last year, where 30 governments have been allowed access to the source code of Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows CE and now Office 2003.

Microsofts main competitor in many markets is free software. More often than not, it's also open source (i.e. anyone can view the underlying code that makes the programs work). Microsoft programs are generally closed source and are only opened up to select people, often with tight restrictions.

To a certain extent, Microsoft has opened up the code to stay competitive (or ahead of the game) with regard to Open Source software. Asides from this fact, the problems with security and inter-operability with Microsoft programs has prompted the move. Governments often use and need software from a variety of vendors to work together to ensure efficiency. Microsoft hopes the move will restore any faith lost in the past few years; recently, the company has been beaten to some lucrative and high value contracts by Open Source alternatives.
