The Future of Flash as a rich client

The Future of Flash as a rich client

The Future of Flash as a rich client 09/13/2002 02:24 AM

Mike Chambers has created ... an example of the Flash MX DataGrid control. It's a great example of the richness of the client environment created with Flash MX. We're now reaching the richness of the traditional Mac/Win desktop in terms of user interface components.

I know the DataGrid is one of those components that *everyone* needs in an Internet application --- it facilitates easy structured viewing/browsing/editing of tabular data; it will be interesting to see how developers extend and enhance it with custom Cell Renderers to provide really powerful data views and manipulation. -- Jeremy Allaire, author of Cold Fusion, CTO Macromedia.

"tri" I intend to learn Flash over the next few months. It looks like this (or something similar) is going to be very important in the future.

Thin client, rich data

Thin client, rich data 06/15/2004 08:32 AM
Current approaches to taking browsers offline typically enqueue messages that later update a server-based data model. An Alchemy application, though, always works with a genuine local data model that it stores as sets of XML fragments and navigates in a relational style. Bosworth's hunch is that a Web-style thin client, driven by a rich data model intelligently synchronized with the services cloud, could do most of what we really need -- both offline and online. Nothing prevents Java, .Net, and Flash clients from adopting the same strategy, by the way. But if Bosworth is right, the universal client that we know and love could get a new lease on life. David Temkin (of Laszlo Systems) will be at the Bay Area Chi meeting tonight.

He's really a wonderful speaker and can explain RIAs for you.

I highly suggest everyone attend.

Ethan and Ian (of ODDport) will be there too.

And io you go - make SURE to ask the Macromedia guy (slimeball) "hey, Flex seems a whole lot like laszlo...... where did you get the idea from."

Macromedia has to know that it's not OK to steal ideas from others and just plain rip them off.

The Future of Flash Drives

The Future of Flash Drives 03/22/2005 04:32 PM

Computer files in your pocket: A good article on the ubiquity of the Flash drive, and where the technology is headed.

[...] some industry insiders see an even bigger future for the tiny devices. Instead of taking a laptop on trips, it's possible to just stick a flash drive into a pocket or purse and turn whatever computer you sit down at into a copy of your own.

Standing in the way of this enticing vision are two S-words: standardization and security, says Steffen Hellmold, president of the USB Flash Drive Alliance, another industry group trying to get manufacturers to agree on setting standards for applications on flash drives.

xt21_front.jpg imageSome might call the M-bird XT-21 digital audio player ugly, and it a way they would be right - it certainly is anything but understated. But in a way, really, I think it's awesome; it sort of lets everything hang out in a way I appreciate. It's like Maycom said, "You know what, screw the new future. I want my cyberpunk back," then tried to figure out how to glom as many knobs and switches and weird curves into the flash memory player that it could. It even has built-in stereo speakers.

This looks exactly like the sort of thing I expected to plug my mirrorshades into.

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

c_flash_dime_bit.jpgPretec Electronics Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones, which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly, though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?

While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.

BlogShares - Gadgetopia: Our share price has gone through the roof at Blogshares. I have no idea why or how this happens, but an outgoing link from us is worth $25K these days. I think that's good.

Actually, this graph is a little misleading since it starts at $800, so the increase is actually about 25%, not the 500% it looks like. However, our total valuation looks good, though I haven't the first clue why, or why we peaked then fell a while back. If anyone knows the mechanics behind this, speak up.
