Independent research firm International Data Corp. (IDC) recently finished work on a report commissioned by Apple that focused on the company's efforts in the scientific life sciences field. While the report was complimentary to many of Apple's accomplishments over the past few years it also pointed out some pitfalls the company would have to watch in the future. This, said an Apple executive, is just what Apple was looking for.

Is AOL Making Political Adjustments To
Google Searches?

Is AOL Making Political Adjustments To
Google Searches?
02/10/2004 05:32 PM
The concept of Google bombing is not new, and we've already discussed what a pointless waste of time it is - sort of the equivalent to scribbling someone's name and an insult on the bathroom wall. It does a lot more to show the immaturity of those involved than to actually convince anyone of the "insult" being proposed. However, AOL is apparently taking another view of the practice. They've edited out the famous "miserable failure" Google bomb result that pointed to George W. Bush. While AOL is free to do what they want, this opens up quite the can of worms. AOL says they did it to get rid of "obviously irrelevant results." The problem, though, is that a group of people who were upset about the miserable failure Google bomb have been trying to associate the phrase with various other people such as Michael Moore, Hillary Clinton and Jimmy Carter - and AOL saw no problem leaving those links. Once you start editing the search results, it leaves you wide open to questions about why you edited them the way you did. AOL would have been much better off ignoring this matter, and letting the search results fall as they did.

The Business Of Making Your Google

The Business Of Making Your Google
Results Worse

While it's well known that there are plenty of folks working on ways to boost rankings in Google, it turns out that the opposite is true as well. First, there's the sort of confidential information that accidentally gets revealed online, which people don't want Google to have. Usually that can be quickly removed from the index by letting Google know. However, others want to make sure that bad or embarrassing things aren't the top results. The article even notes that one PR firm has a full-time search engine optimizer whose main job is to make sure bad stories about clients get pushed down in the rankings.

Google's initial public stock offering, which will probably take place within three months, is a strange brew of optimism, idealism, and pragmatism – all of which reinforces the adage that "the more things change, the more they stay the same."

OpenCourseWare in worldwide use and

OpenCourseWare in worldwide use and
experiment
03/13/2003 10:16 AM

MIT 's recently released OpenCourseWare ( OCW ) is being used by people around the world , who are putting its materials to different uses.

Mr. Cooper, who describes himself as "a lowly tech-ed guy" at Pacific University, in Oregon, says that he envisions a future in which professors and students, using free course materials like MIT's and open-classroom sites on the Web like Tapped In, will exchange their teaching services through a kind of online barter system.
"I could volunteer my hours [to teach] at the high-school level and that would give me credit to then get other hours from somebody else," says Mr. Cooper, an education-technology specialist at Pacific.
... At a Unesco forum about the project in Paris in July, Alain Senteni, director of the Virtual Center for Innovative Learning Technologies, at the University of Mauritius, said his institution had an interest in translating and adapting the content of MIT courses for French-speaking developing countries.
And Mohammed Dahbi, a professor at Mohammed V University's Agdal campus, in Morocco, said faculty members and administrators might use OpenCourseWare as a model for course structure and pedagogy when they recast their courses during the next few years. University courses, he said, are being rewritten as part of a broad reform movement in Morocco.
The high-profile, positive reception of OCW has prompted other institutions to pursue similar initiatives of Webbing up course content for world usage.

eUniversities Worldwide to close 05/08/2004 12:00 PM

The British eUniversities Worldwide is being shut down (subscription required). The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) determined that the project had not garned enough interest, and decided to distribute support to other initiatives.

According to the Chronicle :

Its goal was to attract 5,600 students in its first year. So far, only 900 students from 38 countries have enrolled in its online courses...
The council said it would try to shift work done by UKeU to the institutions that had been working with the virtual university. There are no plans to cancel the courses that have been created, although it will be up to participating institutions to decide the fate of courses they are involved in.

Worldwide Blog Readership Up 01/03/2005 02:47 PM

It is no surprise to me that weblog readership is up worldwide. I have noticed a significant increase in traffic from outside the United States as 29.6% of this sites traffic originates in a foreign country. The Podcast gets and even higher percentage of about 35.1% comes from a foreign country. We had an average monthly growth rate of 21.7% which beats last years monthly growth rate which was around 15%. I could not be happier, the goal here at Geek News Central in 2005 is to have a average of 100,000 unique hits each day. [Yahoo News by AP]

Monitoring wikis worldwide

Monitoring wikis worldwide 01/01/2005 02:58 PM

Newsfeed search engines like Technorati, Feedster, and PubSub make it easy to monitor blogs and news sites. You can subscribe to a search newsfeed to be alerted whenever a blog entry or news items matches your search criteria. But how do you monitor all of the wikis of the world? The newsfeed search engines don't monitor wiki recent changes newsfeeds, or do they?

I googled and turned up some wiki pages on InterWi kiSearchEnginesDiscussion and UnifiedRecentChange s.  Looks like there is plenty more work to be done in this area.
