The Inquirer note that online encyclopaedia,
Wikipedia, has now over a million pages of content.
Formed just under 3 years ago, the site has exploded in content and
usefulness. With just 200,000 pages as of January this year, over the
last 9 months they've seen a five fold increase and a few server pains
to boot. It's unique method of content creation has also been key to
it's success. Users submit data and build up subjects, often with
startling levels of detail. Data can then be edited / updated by other
users as time goes on, keeping content fresh and up to date.
Although the site has enjoyed much success in the technology community
due to it's free / GPL friendly nature, traditional educational
establishments have been urged not to use the site, with some groups
suggesting that it is
"un-authoritative". Indeed, one techie
went on to test exactly
how good Wikipedia users were at weeding out
false information: the results were poor, with
none of the changes being noticed.
Sadly, although Wikipedia list a reference for The Inquirer, the site
doesn't feature yours truly - Neowin. A page placed on the site today
was hours later marked for deletion; better
check it
soon, as it might not be there tomorrow.

Wikipedia has just
announced that it has reached one million articles.
Congratulations Wikipedians! Wikipedia is in more than 100 languages
with 14 currently having over 10,000 articles. It is ranked one of the
ten most popular sites on the Internet according to Alexa.com (trumping Reuters, the Wall
Street Journal and the LA Times). At the current rate of growth,
Wikipedia will double in size again by next spring.
Wikipedia is a volunteer effort supported by the non-profit
Wikimedia Foundation. Please contribute to their fundraising
effort.
Coincidentally, this is the 3000th post on this blog.

Cory Doctorow:
The free/open Wikipedia encyclopedia project just posted its
1,000,000th article.
The Wikimedia Foundation announced today the creation of the one
millionth article in Wikipedia, its project to create a free,
open-content, online encyclopedia (Wikipedia.org
(http://en.wikipedia.org)). Started in January 2001, Wikipedia is
currently both the world's largest encyclopedia and its
fastest-growing, with articles under active development in over 100
languages. Nearly 2,500 new articles are added to Wikipedia each day,
along with ten times that number of updates to existing articles.

iPass Releases Press Release with
McDonald's Name in It
iPass Releases Press Release with
McDonald's Name in It
11/10/2003 10:53 PMMcDonald's will have its networks certified as Enterprise Ready by
iPass: Now the ostensible purpose of this announcement is that
McDonald's restaurants with Wi-Fi access will be available to
customers on the iPass collective network, which comprises over 2,000
hotspots and 400,000 users across the companies they serve. But read a
little closer and you find that the three networks that McDonald's
currently uses to run its Wi-Fi service -- Wayport, Cometa, and
Toshiba -- are either already certified or soon to be. So what's the
news here? Two pieces of news, really. First, McDonald's is making a
corporate-level commitment to iPass, which means that even if they use
other networks, they'll ostensibly make sure that other operators are
or will be certified. Second, McDonald's gave iPass permission to use
its name in a press release, which can't hurt on the credibility side.
A little extra news at the end notes that McDonald's in China will
also become iPass Enterprise Ready. Because all iPass customers have a
directory of hotspots that they are really required to use if they are
to use hotspots at all -- the software can be set to only allow access
to hotspots on iPass's list -- this provides McDonald's with more of
those business bodies they want....

Motorola Officially Announces MPx220:
Leaked Press Releases Do Come True
06/30/2004 02:36 PM
So I guess I should probably
mention that Motorola finally officially announced the MPx220, right?
I mean, there might be something that we didn't already know about it,
even though we already knew it was going to be a quad-band,
Bluetooth-enabled, 1.3-megapixel camera-having, Windows Mobile
2003-running clamshell. How about the fact that the MPx220 has 44 tiny
divots on its front cover? Needed a high resolution image for
that, didn't you?
I'm not trying to be cynical, though; it looks really nice. Nice
enough, in fact, to perhaps pick up while we wait for the MPx300 to
arrive.

Meta-tags, or, the Dublin Meta Core
Meta-tags, or, the Dublin Meta Core
03/17/2005 03:00 AMAs we sort through tags, it'd often be useful to know who created a
particular tag. And when. And in which application. And probably other
stuff also. While some apps remember who created which tag (e.g.,
Flickr), as we begin to aggregate tags, we could use a standard way to
express this tagging metadata...a Dublin Core not for objects but for
tags attached to objects. If this were to happen, it's very likely to
come from the apps that benefit from having standardized tag metadata.
The most obvious suspects are the search engines. (Hmm. I may be
re-having Mary Hodder's...
