Aluminum Yucca

Aluminum Yucca 07/01/2004 08:54 PM
A while back, I was driving west into Albuquerque late at night. As I neared Albuquerque, I looked up and said, "What the heck?" There was this lit-up thing right at where the canyon opens up just before you enter city limits. I had seen one of Albuquerque's latest public art pieces, "Aluminum Yucca." The public arts folks are working on getting gateways to each entrance to the city installed. Well, being the photographing type, I had to get some pictures. This involved a death-defying stop on the shoulder of I-40 with semis roaring past, hopping over a wall, and clambering up some rocks, but was worth it. OK, it was during that day, so it wasn't that death-defying. Because I thought the sculpture looked like a bunch of rockets, discovering what it was called took a lot of googling. Since it was made with salvaged F-15 fuel tanks, I like to think I was close. If you're into the sport know as geocaching, which is sort of a modern day treasure hunt using technology, there is a geocache near the Aluminum Yucca....

Lian-Li OA F1 All-Aluminum Desk

Lian-Li OA F1 All-Aluminum Desk 04/12/2005 07:44 AM

lianli_oa.jpgAluminum folders Lian-Li, best known for their expensive, high-quality PC cases, have announced this doozy of a desk, built to be the ultimate accessory to one of their $300 aluminum cases. Called the 'OA,' almost every bit of the desk is solid, anodized aluminum, available in both natural metal color and black. Little touches include a desktop surface covered with a leather plate and a built-in flash memory card reader and media extender that adds FireWire, USB, and Ethernet right next to the keyboard tray. It's all a little cold, of course, but if you've got around $5,000 handy, UK site Kustom PCs is offering the F1 model for pre-order. (Thanks, Elmer!)

GameDeck: Aluminum Computer Exoskeleton

GameDeck: Aluminum Computer Exoskeleton 06/21/2004 09:06 AM

navisfull.jpg imageAlex Petraglia took a trip down to the offices of GameDeck, the latest company to offer one of those fancy all-in-one PC desk/chassis that every gamer really wants until they realize one of these aluminum bastards costs over five thousand dollars. Still, like any good reporter covering something so drool-worthy, Petraglia takes lots of detailed pictures of the best computer gaming exoskeleton you'll never have. Of course you could get one of the low-end Mayfly models that start at only a grand, but then you're basically just buying a pressed-aluminum version of the same sort of desk you could get at Ikea for $100.

xcraft1.jpg imageThe US Navy is set to christen an experimental aluminum catamaran dubbed the 'X-Craft,' designed to serve as a test bed for a variety of future coast-hugging combat technology. A multi-purpose ramp lets the X-Craft launch a variety of "manned and unmanned surface and sub-surface vehicles," like inflatable boats and scouting submarine drones. DefenseTech has the details—I say we chip in and make Gizmodo a floating, mobile operation.

g5_flatpanel_small.jpg image

I don't know why it is, exactly, that people feel they must concoct some convoluted and unlikely story every time they send in pictures of pre-release items. I mean, I'm fairly sure I've seen these shots before, right here on Gizmodo even, so adding that these were sent to you by your bestest friend who works as an engineer in Cupertino doesn't lend any veracity to these pics, which are interesting enough without all the bullshit. Anyway, I'm going to go with my gut and say these are probably the real deal--but bear in mind I have nothing to base that on except my unflagging, infallible tech future intuition.

Lian Li V1000 Aluminum PC Case

Lian Li V1000 Aluminum PC Case 07/13/2004 10:05 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/lianli_v1000.jpg" alt="lianli_v1000.jpg image" width="440" height="331" class="borderyes" border="0" align="center" vspace="5" hspace="0"/>

We don't normally cover PC cases on Gizmodo, not just because they aren't that interesting, as a rule, but mostly because they are usually just godawful. There are exceptions, thankfully, and this Lian Li V1000 is one of them -- all aluminum, inside and out, with a mesh front and back reminiscent of the PowerMac G5. And while reading the review at PCUnleash might occasionally challenge your English parsing abilities, I think you'll find that the $190 street price of the V1000 almost sounds reasonable when you take into account the fit and finish of a well thought-out case.

The only downside? In my experience, aluminum cases aren't as resilient to frequent hauling as steel-framed cases.

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

WWDC: Apple's 30 Inch Aluminum Displays
and More
06/28/2004 01:13 PM

Apple has announced new aluminim displays to match their G5 PowerMacs. Along with the 20-inch ($1299) and the 23-inch ($1999), a new 30-inch mega-display has been announced that will be driven by a customer dual-DVI video card that will cost $600. I'll get you pictures as soon as I can.

The 30-inch display will cost $3299 without the necessary $600 video card and will be available in August. Unconfirmed resolution is 2560 x 1600.

Looks like the video card is from Nvidia, which would explain that announcement earlier today about SLI, I bet.

Mac OSX Tiger (10.4) will ship in the first half of 2005 and will be native 64 bit instead of the hinky 64/32 bit system from before.

Apple is adopting the MPEG4 .h264 Hi-Definition DVD spec in the Quicktime for Tiger.

Tunewear Aluminum Clip for iPod shuffle

Tunewear Aluminum Clip for iPod shuffle 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

shuffle_clip.jpg imageGood morning, job seekers. Who here thinks the iPod shuffle's end cap is just begging to be lost? Why not invest in something a bit more practical, like this aluminum end cap with clip from Tunewear. It may only be a minute difference, but having your shuffle clipped to your jacket or bag sounds a lot better than just letting it dangle on a lanyard or sit in your pocket. And while Tunewear has only announced the clip in Japan, they do sell their products here, so I expect we'll see it soon enough. Since it's aluminum, you can pretend your little flash player is a PowerPod shuffle, too.

For those of you who couldn't stop dreaming of coating their shuffles in anodized metallics, Griffin Technology has picked up the case and now offers it under the "Griffin iVault" moniker. It just goes to show you that if you have access to a CNC milling machine, a lot of spare aluminum and a keen sense of craftsmanship, your dreams can take you anywhere, or, at the very least, from a message board to a manufacturer. Available for preorder for $30.00 at Griffin.
