Failure to communicate
Failure to communicate
01/16/2004 10:57 AMA growing segment of the technologically-enabled population is
developing what I would best describe as a "derision" towards those
who are not technically competent, for whatever reason. This sentiment
is immediately apparent in the technical support industry, but I've
seen it from peers who've never been formally introduced to tech
support as well. The common factor in the derision appears to be a
result of differences between the two groups of people involved: those
who feel they have invested much time in competence, and those who
they feel have not. Over time, repeated communication failures left
unaddressed appear to result in a build-up of resentment towards one
(or, more often, both) parties. One of the clearest examples of this
can be found in comics that focus on these conflicts, such as Dilbert,
Userfriendly, or w00t; in each, one can find...

03/26/2005 12:57 PMSFC. American Democrats travel
to Iraq, talk to leaders, and come away impressed. The grind of
4th gen global guerrilla warfare isn't visible at the top. All
the well intentioned leadership in the world doesn't matter if the
state's system is fundamentally broken and unable to reboot.
Sudan: a failure of will
Sudan: a failure of will

The Passion of the
Present
A failure of will
Forces from across the world are poised to help the people of
Darfur, but no nation has the will to move forward.
We are in a tragic and signal moment, a catalytic moment, where the
world sees the need, has the means, and yet continues to experience a
failure of will.
...Now it is the public's turn. It is our turn. The time is now for
our action. We must ask our leaders to act now, not in 30 days.
All key elements are in place, except the will to launch the rescue
of Darfur in earnest.
A call to action that you should all
read. This is "low hanging fruit" on the "lets do something good
today" tree. Take some action today.

CAN SPAM: Still A Failure
06/30/2004 01:07 PMI'm sure this will surprise, well, no one, but the CAN SPAM Act still
hasn't done anything to slow down spam. In fact, it looks like
even fewer spam messages are complying
with the requirements in the law. When it was first passed, many
people said that it would take some time for spammers to understand
the law and add in the required info. Instead, it looks like (despite
the series of lawsuits filed), most spammers don't care at all. Out
of 547,685 messages studied, only 71 complied with the law: 0.013%
That number seems way too low. In fact, another study, says that they
found
nearly 10% complied. That's still
low, but it's a lot more than 0.013%. That second study also noted,
by the way, that Viagra is the king of spam, as 14.1% of all spam
messages now advertise the drug. So, is it time to change tactics?
People seem to be getting worked up over an MSNBC story saying
the FTC is considering a
bounty system, but that isn't news. They announced it
over a
month ago, and it doesn't appear as if anything has changed. All
the MSNBC piece adds to the debate is that people on both sides of the
spam issue think it's a terrible idea that will cause more problems
than it solves. Sounds like nothing new at all...
A failure of vision
A failure of vision
07/22/2004 11:19 PMGen John Keane,
Army Vice Chief of Staff (the Army's #2) in testimony before the
House Armed Services Committe on July 15th.
The intellectual capital to prepare ourselves
properly for an insurgency was not there,
There were very few people who actually envisioned,
honestly, before the war, what we are dealing with now after the
regime went down.
We have a lot of young folks that paid the
price for that lack of foresight. Am I correct? Rep. Ike Skelton
(D-MO), the committees ranking Democrat, asked.
Right, yes, sir, Keane replied.
NOTE: Of course, not everyone had a failure of vision on
this.

A new train system in the UK is causing problems with commuters, with
doors not opening at stations because of
problems with satellite.
"Keep a sense of perspective on this,"
claims Southern spokesman. "We run over 1,700 services every day, day
in, day out."
Well, keep a sense of perspective on this, Mr.
Spokesman. Do we send new doctors into the field and tolerate them
when the these new doctors kill one or two patients daily? Give them
time, the doctors will get better.
Do we employ new cooks in
restaurants, and have a few cases of food poisoning daily? Give them
time, the cooks will get better.
Granted, this is no
life-or-death situation here, but hey, we learnt in Computer Science
101 that when you introduce new systems, make sure you have fall-back
plans that will work.
It will be a sad day when it is taken for
granted that new systems will always not work perfectly. It will be a
sad day when it is the norm for the actual users to be the beta
testers.
"Ooops, sorry. I've just killed your husband. Sorry, but
we will get better. New chef, you know? Here's a voucher for your next
meal. See you again!"

administration has been especially successful at getting the American
media to confirm its political and diplomatic agenda. Media reporting
on the President amplified the administration s voice: when Bush said
to the country that Americans are vulnerable to WMD in the hands of
terrorists, the media effectively magnified those fears." Lawrence Lessig says:
"As media becomes more concentrated, competition to curry favor
with politicians only increases... Concentrated media and expansive
copyright are the perfect storm not just for stifling debate but,
increasingly, for weakening democracy as well." Can we make the

democratic?

Many languages have failed honorably -- Eiffel, Dylan, Oberon, Icon,
CLP(R), C+@, Oak, PL/1, Bliss, Algol-68, Pascal -- some more
honorably, some less, but far too many to list, or indeed to count.
Others struggle vainly along, confined forever to subsidized niches --
Erlang, Common LISP, REXX, Objective-C, Delphi, Ada. Only a handful of
languages sustain a vigorous population of programmers using them,
industrially, for their original purpose; we need not list them.
