An interesting discussion based on the famous line found on just about every resume: "references available on request". Is this an outdated idea when your "references" may be everywhere online? As the article points out, many people have quite a history of themselves online - and anyone can do a "reference check" on them with a simple search. While some are scared of this un-erasable past (or, as some may say, your "permanent record"), it's pretty much a fact of life for most of us. If that's the case, shouldn't you embrace it, and try to make the best of it?

In a quick note from Steven's blog is a pointer to tricky problem with the clone keyword in PHP 5- "There is a nasty change in PHP5: objects are now always passed by reference. Variables hold a handle to the object rather than the object itself. This brings PHP more in line with other OO languages (like Java) and removes some of the ugly from PHP OO code, but it also means that objects are treated differently from all the other types. Old code that depends on having objects copied when not passed by reference will break." For the fix, go here.

Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing pal Todd Lappin says, "Marxy has an interesting series of posts on his blog about a mid-80's Japanese girl group called The Onyanko Club, which translates loosely as Pussy Club (with very similar connotations). This is must-read/listen stuff, in a jaw-dropping, Hello Kitty-meets-Peaches kind of way."

In 1986, the Pussy Club hit Number One on the Oricon with their peppy surf-rock ode to sexual harassment on the public transportation system: Otto Chikan! (mp3). The word "chikan" means "male sexual pervert" and also refers to the action of men feeling up women on the subways. Not exactly a term that just screams "pop song chorus." The song starts as an anti-chikan rant from a high school wanting revenge on the suspcious males in her train car, but turns out, she was wrong to complain: the creepy kid in thick glasses just wanted to give the girl a love letter. Crisis averted.

The song seems to say: these men who appear to be in the art of - excuse me for this one - chikan'ery in fact have pure romantic intentions (love letter). Don't jump to conclusions, little girls!

If you dig that one, don't miss "Stop it, Teacher!" an upbeat pop morsel about a tenured pedophile.

Variable Variables in PHP Well since it's late but I'm still grinding and I feel guilty for not blogging much today, here's a special PHP Treat: A Variable Variable Tutorial. Yes that's right. There is a feature in PHP called "Variable Variables". One of the issues that I had with implementing our Digibuy support was our old friend and enemy: Parsing. This is such a fundamental thing but there always seems to be a new wrinkle in it. In this case we had an existing PHP script which did our registration calculations and was expecting a certain set of variables. Now this code was fairly complex and I didn't want to re-write it (much). Here's the input data we had to parse: author_id=BillBrown & author_password=HemosRules & prod_sku=98079949999 With the exception that it had like 30 odd variables in it. Since my code was expecting a series of variables I needed to parse this and automatically create a series of variables like $author_id and $author_password. Now if this data was being given to me by a URL then it would be easy -- PHP could automatically do it or I could just pull them out of $_REQUEST. But, instead, I had them going to me as if they were a file. So ... How do you create a series of variables on the fly? Note: Yes I could have made an associative array but that wouldn't have taught me anything, now would it ? I could also have gotten a similar effect with the extract function but I found out about that after this working. And if the code is working then ... Well deep in the recesses of what I call a brain was a recollection of "variable variables". I think I heard about this in a talk that Rasmus gave although I can't honestly be sure. I do know that whenever you need to do "meta" type tasks like this in a language, you need to poke around the oddball features since that's usually where they reside. What I do is look for the sections of the documentation that I've never read. The idea behind a variable variable is simple: interpret the value of a variable and make it into a variable itself. I.e. the "variable variable" nomenclature. Since php uses $ for indicating a variable they've chosen to use $$ to make a variable variable. Let's say you have two variables, $part1 and $part2. If $part1 = "author_id" and $part2="HemosRules" how do I get to $author_id = "HemosRules". Simple: $$part1 = $part2. Yup. It's just that easy. Of course I did need to wrap it into a string parsing loop. Here's the guts of it: $strarray = explode("&",$input); foreach ($strarray as $stritem) { $stritem = trim($stritem); $part1 = substr ( $stritem, 0, strpos ( $stritem,"=" ) ); $part2 = substr ( $stritem, strpos ( $stritem,"=" )+1, strlen ( $stritem ) ); #magic! $$ is a "variable variable" i.e. it converts the value #in the variable into a variable itself $$part1 = $part2; } The way this works is an input string, $input, contains everything that needs to be processed. First I explode this into an array using "&" as the delimiter. Then I loop over the array with a foreach loop creating a $part1 variable and a $part2 variable. Finally I just do the magic $$part1 = $part2. Here's the example Source Code. A weekend without my beautiful Powerbook means lots of time to sort out my disasterous financial / bill-paying / mounds of paper situation. This - in turn - means that some forms of music television have become an essential part of my life. Which means in turn that I'm being exposed to what seems to me to be a ludicrous excess of Christmas singles. Like dozens of them! Way more than normal. The other day I wrote about the The Darkness' effort but it's far far far from alone. Check out this highly inexhaustive list:

And that's just the ones with explicitly Christmas themes (and doesn't include blatant Christmas-mongering attempts like the Ozzy/Kelly Osbourne atrocity). So I wonder to myself? Why is this Christmas so poptastic? Is there some kind of correlation between the perceived redundancy of the music industry and a prevalence of these cheesy singles? Or does it correlate to anxiety about the state of the world? Or is it a sign of complacency? Or are we all just incredibly naff? Thoughts on a postcard please (and let me know if I've missed any of the little bastards)...
