California Lawmaker Wants Gaming Ban For
Kids
12/04/2003 02:25 PMA California lawmaker has decided that because there's violence in
some video games
kids should be
banned from buying them. The article at Broadband Reports does a
good job explaining why this is overreacting as usual. When there's
violence among kids, people are always looking for someone to blame,
but the blame never seems to fall on the kids themselves who almost
definitely know the difference between virtual and real - and between
right and wrong. Instead, people blame the video game and assume that
somehow kids will suddenly stop being violent.

Getting Kids To Program Old School Video
Games
04/06/2005 06:48 AMIt seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their
attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original
Atari) to
make
a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from
years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly)
on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic
concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers
to learn -- resulting in a
competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of
course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours.
While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind
people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a
game is still about
gameplay at its core -- which many of
today's game designers seem to forget.

I just received word that I have been admitted into the
International Business Strategy Doctor of Business Administration
(DBA) program at the Hitotsubashi University
Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy. I was talking
to them last year about possibly applying, since the Ministry of
Education recently changed the rules so people could apply for a
doctorate program without a masters degree. Unfortunately, I don't
even have an undergraduate degree so it was tough nuggies for me. They
changed the rules this year and let me apply again and I got in. I
guess this makes me the least educated student to ever be admitted.
hmm...
Anyway, the real reason I'm doing this isn't the degree, although
that's nice. It's a very cool program where I will be able to use the
resources of the university including research and the professors. My
only deliverable is a book on the sharing economy. I don't have to take
any classes and the topic really fits right in with Creative Commons, blogging
and everything else I'm doing. I'm a big fan of many of the professors
at the school and I am really psyched to be able to exploit them
officially now. ;-)

A pair of articles from Reuters and USA Today try
to extrapolate the buying habits of students returning to college,
which would be sort of interesting if there were some hard numbers,
but they're mostly a "Talk to Analysts, See What They Like," sort of
thing. Still, it's good to hear that Averatec's C3500 Tablet PC is
selling well; I haven't used one, but the price is right, for sure.
Other stalwarts like Palms and Sidekicks and iPods aren't that
surprising, but the USA Today article, claiming the success of the
iPod this year is causing more students to purchase Apple laptops
(specifically iBooks) is curious. I'm a little sketched, honestly, but
I'm looking forward to the numbers later this year. Even Apple
themselves has said they don't really expect the iPod to translate
into increased sales numbers for the Mac.
And even if more students are using Macs, it's not as if that means
they'll continue to use them out in the real world. I mean, everybody
that that first smoked pot in college immediately stopped on
the day they graduated, right?
