Less Useless Than The Last One
New Anti-Spyware Coalition Hopes To Be
Less Useless Than The Last One
06/05/2005 11:57 PMJust a few months after an anti-spyware coalition
fell
apart after it admitted known malware creators to the group, a
new group has formed that promises it won't meet the same fate.
They say the original group tried to do too much -- though, really the
problem was just that they let the fox into the hen house. In the
meantime, this more "narrowly focused" group plans to start out by
"defining spyware." Good luck. People (politicians, mainly) have
been trying to define spyware for quite some time,
witho
ut much luck. The problem with defining such things is that you
never know what the unintended consequences are -- and there are some
actions that may be perfectly legit in some programs, but a serious
problem in others. It's still not clear why existing fraud laws can't
cover the problems caused by most malware. Besides, as we've seen
with CAN SPAM, it wouldn't be surprising if many malware makers figure
out ways to follow the letter of the law, but not the spirit -- or,
failing that, to ignore it completely.

Anti-Phishing Working Group Meeting
Anti-Phishing Working Group Meeting
04/09/2004 05:30 PM
I was out all day yesterday to attend the Anti-Phishing
Working Group meeting at Wells Fargo World HQ in San
Francisco. About one
hundred people from wide assortment of backgrounds were there, some
from law enforcement
agencies like the Secret Service and FBI, lawyers, prosecutors,
financial services,
e-tailers, solutions vendors, and security experts. APWG did
an impressive job
of pulling them altogether to focus on the phishing epidemic which
continues to grow.
While everyone wanted to pool resources to combat phishing, I
sensed a common desire
to protect details about ongoing APWG activities from the public
for various reasons.
Since I am not sure what APWG's policy is about blogging, I will
limit this post to
my thoughts and observations.
Toolbars
Warm receptions received by Account
Guard feature of eBay
Toolbar and Dan Boneh's SpoofGuard means
more toolbars in the near future. I predict we'll see about
ten security-related
toolbars released before this year is over. Since highly
integrated client-side
software like browser toolbars are one of my specialties, all this
is good news for
me but I couldn't help worrying about the oncoming glut of
toolbars, sidebars, and
deskbars causing confusion among users.
Microsoft
Microsoft needs to do more to combat phishing. Actually, they
need to do 'less'
by disabling or limiting use of hyperlinks and javascript in
Outlook and Hotmail.
Since phishing is causing real financial damages to companies and
individuals, Microsoft
created an arguably very large liability exposure by introducing
DHTML e-mail in Outlook.
My opinion is that hyperlinks in e-mail contents should require the
user to approve
each navigation after viewing a dialog that clearly indicate the
link destination.
This constraint can be eased depending on the age of the hyperlinks
because destination
phishing websites are more likely to be takendown or abandoned over
time. I
also think javascript should be disabled completely in e-mail
contents to protect
against new breed of javascript obfuscated webpages.
Hunters vs. Butchers
Law enforcement agencies are IMHO still in the hunter mode, meaning
hackers they find
and prosecute are more or less trophies for assuring the
public. Seen as services,
they are open to denial of service attacks by organized hackers
arming script-kiddies
to overload or slowdown cybercops. They need to think about
ways to shift-gear
from hunter to butchers mode now, if not just against
phishers, then for
homeland security.
Takedown.com
Most difficult part of fighting against phishing is taking down
phishing websites.
Differences and confusino in law and legal jurisdictions,
cross-language communication
issues, availability, authority verification problems, and other
issues make taking
down a fraud site a skill or an art of social networking,
ingenuity, and patience
which most companies do not have.
Solutions suggested so far like contacts and standards are useless
IMHO. A more
effective solution is to encourage entrepreneurs to startup
federated or franchised
businesses to offer takedown services around globe and around
the clock with the
local touch. Having middlemen like them solves most of
the issues mentioned
above.
Spoofback
Considering the difficulty with takedown, another options is to
'spoof back' by posting
phony information to the phishing websites in order to spoil the
goods by diluting
it with bad info. Instead of receiving 3,000 good responses,
phishers will receive
300,000 responses most of which will be bad. Another
variation is to post user
info leading to honeypots in order to phish the phishers. I
am not sure about
the legal issues, but hackback risk is no worse than the takedown
IMHO.
APWG Future Threat Models SIG
I have volunteered to participate in the Future Threat Models SIG
at APWG because
I am both highly creative and insanely paranoid which means I can
see blindspots where
none exists. :-) I probably won't be posting about
the activities
there but I will post my thoughts and publicize imminent threats
like the XSS
Network threat I posted about before.

02/12/2004 11:28 PMLast week, the US Attorney's office filed numerous subpoenas
concerning a November Anti-War forum held at Drake University. The
university, the leader of the Catholic Peace Ministry, and at least
four participants received the subpoenas, according to the New York
Times story. The justification supplied by the US Attorney's office
was that the subpoenas were part of an ongoing incident involving an
activist who scaled a fence at a Iowa National Guard facility a day
after the meeting, during a protest.

New anti-download campaign debuts during
Grammys
New anti-download campaign debuts during
Grammys
02/10/2004 02:51 AMThe
National Academy of Recording Arts and
Sciences (NARAS), the organization behind the Grammys, debuted a
TV and radio PSA campaign against digital filesharing during tonight's
awards show. One TV ad premiered during the awards show observes a
young woman downloading a 3MB file called "music" to her PC, while a
club full of hipsters dances to the music somewhere else. When her
download completes, lights and music in that somewhere else shut off.
The spot urges viewers to visit the dorkily-domained whatsthedownload.com, where
they'll find statements from pop stars about the dire consequences of
downloading (causes regional blackouts?), and pleas to purchase tunes
from a list of approved online services. I understand there's already
a deadpool going for how
long until haxxors shut off the lights. The site also includes a message
board. Will be interesting to see how that portion of the site
fleshes out.
One thing that visitors won't find, unless they're looking really
really hard, is the fact that The Recording Academy is behind the
site. Regardless of whether you're for or against filesharing, lack of
transparency makes people suspicious -- particularly the web-savvy,
younger crowd they're probably hoping this site will reach. At least
one flamewar about that issue is already under way in th
is area of the site's message board. Link to press release about
whatsthedownload.com launch.
And in other news, what the hell was up with that Outkast finale
number? I mean, what was that? The Lucky Charms
leprechaun meets every horrible Native American stereotype ever
plastered on a football helmet meets a set of macrame curtains? Where
are the Fab 5
when you need 'em?
Update: For those of you without MTV or someone
under 25 in your life, "whatsthedownload" is a bad pun sortasoundalike
for "what's the downlow." Which translates to "wassup." "Que hubo."
"What's shakin'." BoingBoing reader Bruce says, "On a hunch, I tried
www.whatsthedownlow.com, and I'm happy to report that NARAS didn't
secure that domain as well. Heh!"

not Diet Cokes to the head, from our fellow patrons. Viva La
