I
have posted up our
review
of the brand new Microsoft based smartphone - the Orange SPV C500.
This is the
latest smartphone that has just been released in the UK and runs
Windows Mobile
2003 Second Edition software. The review is based on the silver
version of the phone.
Here is a piece from the review:
Being a long time Pocket PC user I
found Microsoft's
entry into the Smartphone business more interesting than most. Pocket
PC sales have
not been as good as they could be, and I have to admit, I've
started to find mine
more and more useless with the influx of new mobile phones that can do
just about
everything I want from a PDA. The Orange C500 Windows Powered
smartphone is my 2nd
Microsoft based phone I have had from Orange, the first one I started
off with was
the rather large in size E200 model shown below left. The major
problem with previous
Windows Based smartphones has been battery time and the size of the
unit, well things
are about to change with the introduction of the new C500 phone from
Orange.

New Orange Smartphone: SPV C500
05/24/2004 02:27 PMLong on speculation and short on details, the first news of a new
Windows Mobile 2003 SE phone has leaked out, including what looks like
a (hopefully) rough mockup image to me. There's not much more known
than that, except...

When reader Martin McNeil asked us why we
hadn't talked much about his new phone, the Orange SPV C500, we did
the logical thing and asked him to do our job for us. Since Marty is a
sucker, he actually did it. We're going to start making everybody
answer their own questions (and why does he have American
quarters?)
Orange has recently released a new SmartPhone in the UK, France and
Netherlands dubbed the SPV C500. It is the fourth handset in their
“signature” phone series in that it carries their brand, although the
phone is actually manufactured in Taiwan by HTC. This particular
handset is also available from QTek as the 8010 and i-mate as the
Smartphone 3. It will doubtless be carried by other providers and
resellers with their particular branding.

align="right">The smallest smartphone in the world has
officially launched here in the UK today. However amongst all the
fanfare and celebrations from people waiting for this phone, no-one
can order it. Orange are experiencing technical problems on their
databases resulting in their sales staff getting an "out of
stock" message even though the phone launched today and the
system alerts sales people that stocks are available. Orange has been
experiencing a lot of technical problems recently following on from
last weeks network outage for users of certain SIM cards.
As for the C500, it's a vast improvement on previous SPVs which have
been lacking in battery life, call quality and good looks. The C500
takes smartphones in the right direction. Rumours are that the device
has a battery standby of nearly 5 days which is a big improvement on
the full charge per day of the E200. The C500 comes with the standard
Bluetooth, infared, GPRS connections and Microsoft's Windows Mobile
2003 Second Edition. The device will also take mini SD cards and has
64mb onboard storage. We will be bringing you a full review of the SPV
C500 as soon as Orange ship us a device to test. Keep your eyes
peeled.

And though we've mentioned it before, Orange has
confirmed the launch of its new Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone, the
SPV C500. It's a tiny bugger, with integrated Bluetooth and all the
other goodness you'd expect from a Windows smartphone. No price yet,
but expect this one to be a popular unit.

AudioVox: never again
09/25/2004 03:11 PM
A couple months ago, I bought this cool new phone by Audiovox -- the
CMD8900. The speaker then quit working. I returned it to the store I
had bought it at (New Wireless, 107 West Portal Ave) at the end of
August. Last week, when it was still not back, I called and asked why.
New Wireless informed me all Audiovox repairs take "30 to 45 days." I
found that hard to believe, so I went to the Audiovox website, and
posted a question asking whether that was true. A week later, no
response still.
So though I have spent over $60 for wireless service this month, I've
had no wireless phone. And indeed, if this is Audiovox's policy, it is
a
really good reason not to rely upon that company. Unless of
course, your cell phone is just a toy which you don't really need, and
you don't mind spending scores of dollars for service that you cannot
use.

In
Om's very positive review of the Sprint Audiovox 6601 Pocket PC phone,
he writes, "I personally feel that Microsoft should stop trying to get
into all general purpose phones and instead focus on these high end
devices which make life easier for the 'enterprise user.'" That made
me wonder: is Microsoft marketing these devices to anybody
besides enterprise users (we geeky early-adopting types,
aside)? I think the genius of something like, say, the Sidekick II, is
that it has moved keyboard-based messaging into a form factor and a
user interface that even sassy debutants don't mind busting out in
public. I don't know that the target demographics' optimal form
factors are mutually exclusive (in concept), but I can promise you
that no one—even the enterprise user that Audiovox is
targeting—really wants to pull something this ugly out of their
pocket in the middle of a restaurant.
God I'm deep.

I can hardly
believe it's true, but MobileTracker is reporting that Sprint has
announced the Audiovox PM-8920, the first megapixel-plus cameraphone
for the US market. And if that weren't enough, the price is to be low
-- $150 after rebates. Among its other features, the PM-8920 also
features an 'Airplane Mode,' a special setting that allows games and
applications to be used while keeping the cellular radio powered down.
(That sounds like a load of fun to explain to the stewardesses.)
The PM-8920 should be in stores today. If any of you early adopters
want to send in early impressions, feel free.

Mobile Treo
04/06/2005 11:31 AMAnother day, another Windows Treo rumor. This one is somewhat
legit, but still, salt liberally:
Which is fascinating...
but can it explain the embarrassing scenes in the Landmark Hotel,
London, where a Very Senior Orange Person produced his Treo 650, and
switched it on, and carelessly allowed all others at the table to see
that it was not running PalmOs, but Windows Mobile 2005?
Several people eagerly produced camera-phones to record this, and
the phone was hastily tucked away where the sun can't
shine.
Wow, those UK conferences get
wild.
So
where actually is the new Orange Treo 650? Microsoft Treo??
