The Paris Review puts Writers at Work
interview series online
12/19/2004 03:41 PMIn its fifty-first year of publication, The Paris Review continues to
search for new ways to bring together writers and readers. To that
end, next month we’ll launch the DNA of Literature project: a complete
online archive of the Writers at Work interview series. Available, it
should be noted, for free. Years ago, when we first started discussing
the archive, George liked to imagine a far-flung subscriber, who, for
some reason, he placed in Bangladesh,…

Linux as a Work in Progress
Linux as a Work in Progress
05/05/2004 10:45 PMIn a comment over on Kasia's blog, David said: Consider Linux as a
work in progress..things are going to be a-changing, so tomorrow you
may not even see that problem. It might have already been
fixed..things are constantly improving. That got me wondering a bit.
How does a linux distribution "decide" when it's time to cut a new

have an idea how the MySQL folks decide...

Washington Post explains why I give my
stepdaughters Linux computers
12/24/2003 02:33 PMI've written before about why Linux is the best operating system to
give on a "gift" computer to a friend or family member who is light on
technical expertise. Now Washington Post tech columnist Rob Pegoraro
has written a column about poor computer company tech support
(warning: taking an annoying survey may be required to read the
article) that confirms my opinion.

Linux systems now comprise more than
half of world's fastest 500 computers
06/21/2004 07:03 PMGo back more than a few years ago and Linux had zero representation
among the world's fastest supercomputers, which relied on traditional,
monolithic mainframe machines running Sparc, HP-UX, Unix or other
operating systems. In the last few years, however, the open source
operating system has begun dominating the list, thanks to clustering
and Intel hardware in the supercomputing market.
Making USB storage devices work

Making USB storage devices work
seamlessly under Linux
12/09/2003 03:51 AMWhat do you do when your ISP tells you the reason your Windows box
can't connect to the network is because its network drivers got
corrupted? You download new drivers using your Linux client and use
Sneakernet to move them to Windows. USB storage devices like
M-Systems' DiskOnKey are extremely useful for ad hoc chores like this,
and I was lucky to have one on hand. But how to make Linux mount the
device as seamlessly as Windows does?
