The Pew Internet & American Life Project reported this week that 36 million Americans, 27 percent of internet users, report having downloaded music or video files. Half of this group have skirted the traditional peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and commercial online distribution services (i.e. Napster, iTunes). This is a significant number of digital media users whose sharing of digital media is untraceable by the recording industry and copyright holders.

Nashville business owner Ed Clay (President and CEO of Gameness, Nashville Mixed Martial Arts, Punch Kickboxing, and Grappler Gear) has formerly joined efforts with Made To Order Websites (one of Tennessee's top web hosting companies) in order to develop an online procurement and distribution network for the now-famous Gameness clothing line. The venture, commonly referred to as "The Gameness Distributor System" has been architected by Shane Messer of The Incubator Group (a venture capital and business development firm also located in Nashville) and will provide a way to reach a huge number of customers throughout the martial arts industry via directly providing custom web sites to other martial arts schools and providing Gameness products to the students of those schools. Tristan Louis writes "Reading stories after stories about the RIAA lawsuits, broadcast flags, DVD holds for the Oscar, etc... I've started to develop a grand theory of digital assets piracy reactions, assessing 4 stages of reactions to piracy. I thought it might interest Techdirt readers." This sounds about right - though, I wonder if there's ever a point where the industry realizes how much time and money they waste in the early stages.

Bobby Fuller< /a> was a Texas based rock and roll singer best known for the immortal rebel anthem "I Fought The Law,". Considered by many to be the heir to Buddy Holly as the king of Texas Rock, he built on Holly's style with songs like the aforementioned "...Law," "Jenny Lee," "Love's Made A Fool Of You," and the 2 1/2 minute masterpiece "Let Her Dance." And then it ended, at age 22, in very weird circumstances. Over the years, interest in Fuller and his work has ebbed and flowed, and plenty of archival material surfaced, but the mystery of his death remains unsolved, although many have speculated. Ann odd end for a footnote character in rick history, but who was bound for more

Dance Dance Revolution

Cory Doctorow: American health insurers are working with obesity researchers to encourage children to play Dance Dance Revolution on home consoles with dance-mats as a way of reversing childhood obesity and the concomitant health costs later in life.
Jones is one of 85 children in an at-home study trying the popular Dance Dance Revolution video game to boost their activity. The study is being done by West Virginia's public employees insurance group in hopes it will lead to better health and lower costs.

Jones lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks playing the game, he has lost another 10.

Cory Doctorow: Kickass Kung Fu is a video-game in which you use real martial-arts moves to control an on-screen kung-fu fighter in order to best both human and AI opponents.
The game takes place on a 5 meter cushioned playfield suitable for martial arts and acrobatics training. Using custom computer vision technology, you are taken inside an artificial reality where the normal laws of physics no longer apply. Your movements are exaggerated so that you can easily dodge your opponent's bullets by jumping five meters in the air and landing behind his back. Using the dual projected screens, one at each end of the playfield, you can also continue by counter-attacking your stupefied enemy from the behind.

There have been discussions over the past few years about the problem of childhood obesity and how video games that force kids to be active may be at least part of the solution. While going outside and doing something is probably better, if they must be staring at a screen, they might as well be active about it. It appears that one insurance company has decided to test this out and is running a study by giving Dance, Dance Revolution to kids in an effort to make them lose some weight. While others have noted the aerobic nature of the game (and the game apparently has a calorie burning counter as an option), this appears to be the first insurance company promoting the game. Next thing you know, your car insurance rates will rise if you play Grand Theft Auto...

Digital Gallery for Your Wall

Digital Gallery for Your Wall 07/07/2004 11:20 AM

PhotoVu recently announced the PV1910 wireless picture frame to display your latest and greatest digital creations.

The PV1910 is the industry's first Wi-Fi®, 19" LCD digital picture frame. Recognizing that most digital camera users store, organize, edit, and share their pictures with the computer, the PV1910 compliments the way you work today by displaying your photos or presentations in their native formats and without creating yet another photo storage location. The new photo "shoebox" isn't in the closet or basement any more, it is on the computer!

While the digital frame is not a new concept, the addition of Wi-Fi makes this product particularly appealing. Older versions either accepted a memory card or in some cases had a modem built in that downloaded pictures.

The integration of iPhoto is an added bonus. Since iPhoto has built in sharing capability I assume it pulls photos from a specifically named album from within iPhoto. However, I don't see the market growing until the price of these products drop dramatically. $1500 is a bit steep. Come up with one that is about 11x14 and costs a couple hundred bucks and I'll probably put one in my home.

Hmmm... Maybe Apple will come out with one of these. Adding a product like this to the new Airport Express makes some sense.
