The Walgreens-branded PureDigital camera is a "disposable" digital cam, requiring that you bring the device to a Walgreens to have your pix "developed" (printed and/or exported). A hacker has cracked the device, so that you can add Smartmedia memory and export pictures to your PC at home, reusing the camera.

you will see there is a daughter board on there with the nand flash for picture storage .. if you remove that board you can add a smartmedia socket and using smartmedia card you will be able to get the pics with a smartmedia reader standard jpg's but it will not do more that 25 pics still (think its using fat12)..

Taiwan News has an article about RoboSapien being a humanoid robot that dishes out kung fu moves. Mark Tilton, aka BEAM religious leader, and hyped as a Nasa scientist (you either like him or hate him), is helping Wow Wee toys create the RoboSapien which will be coming soon to stores at around $100 each. RoboSapien is build on the BEAM concept like their previous toy BIO Bugs (popular a couple a years ago), but instead of a bug it is sort of like a fast lumbering ape. It walks like a ape, it growls like an ape, it even passes gas like an ape. It can dance and do kung fu. I"m sure kids will go ape over this thing.

Several interesting Robosapien items have been submitted lately. From Gizmodo comes news of a giant Robosapien outside the Macy's department store in New York. Also, zodiak has written an article on the Robosapien's internals that includes lots of very clear photos. That sort of information will come in handy if you plan on entering the SERVO Magazine Hack-A-Sapien contest. Also some DPRG members dissected a Robosapien at a recent RBNO. If you haven't got a Robosapien yet, they're still available from Amazon.com at a discount. Links to more photos and video of the Robosapien are available in a previous robots.net article.

Could it be that Sharper Image actually has something marginally cool? Incomprehensible as that may be, it appears that the technoshlock vendor is selling special edition "Signature Series" RoboSapiens, available in both Chrome and Blue, with designer Mark Tilden's autograph.

I realized as I started to write this that I had missed my little brother's seventh birthday. Nate, if you're reading this, remember that your brother doesn't hate you, he just, uhm, was waiting for the chrome one to come out. Actually, your brother just calculated shipping at Sharper Image, and you're getting a white one from someone else, because with shipping prices like that they can blow him. The new Robosapien V2 looks fantastic. For just 200 bucks, the new bot will be able track objects and movements, recognize objects and skin tones—all sorts of crazy stuff. Onrobo (another one of the new robot blogs, a trend I think is great) has details, as well as this first picture. Oh, and they have information about Roboraptor and Robopet, which the new V2 Robosapien can control (although they can be operated independently).

There's a lot of buzz lately about Robosapien, Mark Tilden's latest robotics venture. Dave Hrynkiw of Solarbotics sent us this update: "Solarbotics visited Mark Tilden at the Wow-Wee show room during the 2004 New York City Toy Fair. The Robosapien has been getting very high interest, garnering coverage in both the toy-trade and TIME magazine issues released during the fair. Gadget Madness has completed an arduous multi-week "experience" with the RoboSapien that has ended (as many love affairs do) with a music video. See the white robot ape chase away pigeons, bask in the plastic-crackling sun, and co-opt the culture of black robots - sort of a mechsploitation film, really. GadgetMadness confirms the release date of WowWee's next set of Robots and I have to say I'm disappointed. While I'm not looking forward to paying $200 for a Robosapien V2, I'm most certainly not looking forward to waiting until December before I can get my hands on one. The RoboRaptor [pictured] will launch for $100 in August, which might sooth me, although I may wait to go cheap in October and get one of the ambiguously named Robotpets for $70 instead. Or I'll do what I did with the first Robosapien and get one for my brother, then steal it from him when I go home for the holidays.

We've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright. In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an impact on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset makers to offer multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly) over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will cost lots of money and anger many people.
