Wireless sensing has emerged as a major research topic in the recent years and is now triggering a growing demand for the deployment of low-power wireless sensor networks in customer applications. Mirror, mirror on the wall...

Mirror, mirror on the wall... 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
..who will mirror Fink above all? There is a new player on the turf and it belongs to the Fink team. Finkmirrors.net tells you everything you wanted to know about mirroring Fink and its related resources on your Server. As our mirror structure will hopefully grow in the future, this web-site will also hold information about each individual mirror. To ensure that our service remains as stable as possible and to distribute the load imposed onto our main rsync server, we are looking for rsync mirrors or full mirrors. Those of you who are willing to share resources will find all the necessary information on Finkmirrors.net. UPDATE: Yes, I screwed up when I initially installed the DNS records. If you cannot connect please try again later. I am very sorry for this inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding.

Nike Ground is the latest surreal action by the European art group known as 0100101110101101.ORG, a band of media artists who use non conventional communication tactics to obtain the largest visibility with the minimal effort. Past works include staging a hoax involving a completely made-up artist, ripping off the Holy See and spreading a computer virus as a work of art. In mid September 2003, 0100101110101101.ORG started a surreal art project called Nike Ground, a…

Cellphone ringtones were a $3 billion business last year, but a new bit of software from Xingtone finally makes it possible to easily create your own sounds. I always thought much of the Opsound archive would make good ringtones. It'll be interesting to see if more CC music makes its way onto phones everywhere.

In other CC-in-other-media news, some people working on MythTV (a sort of open source TiVo that can run on any linux PC) are trying to find ways to imp ort movies from the Internet Archive and under CC license to their TV systems.

Guinness Spurs Most Wi-Fi Use in U.K. 11/13/2003 01:34 PM
A recent Intel study that ranked towns in the U.K. by the number of hot spots per capita, noticed that more hot spots in the U.K. are in pubs than anywhere else: That's certainly a big difference from the U.S. where cafes make up the largest group of hot spots. (As opposed to pub-based "hot sots," which are overheated regulars.) The Intel study ranked Exeter number one, followed by Bangor in Wales and then Newcastle. London ranked 33 because even though it has the most hot spots in the U.K.--and the second most in the world behind New York--its large population puts it lower on the per capita-based listing....

Another Thing To Blame On The iPod: Less
Guinness
09/03/2004 12:29 PM
It's amazing the sorts of things they blame on technology these days. Guinness is having a bit of a sales slump these days, and wouldn't you know it, it's because those darn Irish kids are putting all their money into buying iPods rather than heading down to the pub. Next thing you know, we're going to be seeing commercials talking about the poor, poor Guinness plant worker who you are putting out of business by stealing from them by not going to the pub, but rather choosing to spend your money in a way that it does not go into their pockets. The shame of it all.
