Going Ape over RoboSapien
Going Ape over RoboSapien
12/02/2003 12:24 AMTaiwan News has an article about RoboSapien being a
humanoid robot that dishes out kung fu moves. Mark Tilton, aka
BEAM
religious leader, and hyped as a Nasa scientist (you either like him
or hate him),
is helping Wow Wee
toys create the
RoboSapien which will be coming soon to stores at around $100
each. RoboSapien
is build on the BEAM concept like their previous toy BIO Bugs
(popular a couple a years ago), but instead of a bug it is sort of
like a
fast lumbering ape. It walks like a ape, it growls like an ape, it
even
passes gas like
an ape. It can dance and do kung fu. I"m sure kids will go ape over
this thing.

Having made many of the "must have" lists for Xmas 2004,
WowWee is introducing follow ups to their breakout product, the
Robosapien. A new 7-inch Mini Robosapien is the first to be shown,
shipping in February for just $10. More robots will be shown at CES
this week, including a new 'Robosapien V2,' a 'Roboraptor,' and a
'Robopet.'

08/18/2004 04:15 PMSeveral interesting Robosapien items
have been submitted lately. From Gizmodo comes news of a giant
Robosapien outside the Macy's department store in New York. Also,
zodiak has written an article
on the Robosapien's internals that includes lots of very clear
photos. That sort of information will come in handy if you plan on
entering the SERVO
Magazine Hack-A-Sapien contest. Also some DPRG members dissected a
Robosapien at a recent RBNO. If you haven't got
a Robosapien
yet, they're still available from Amazon.com
at a discount. Links to more photos and video of the
Robosapien are available in a previous robots.net article.

The new Robosapien V2 looks fantastic. For just 200
bucks, the new bot will be able track objects and movements, recognize
objects and skin tones—all sorts of crazy stuff. Onrobo
(another one of the new robot blogs, a trend I think is great) has
details, as well as this first picture. Oh, and they have information
about Roboraptor
and Robopet, which the new V2 Robosapien can control (although
they can be operated independently).

Could it be that Sharper Image actually has something
marginally cool? Incomprehensible as that may be, it appears that the
technoshlock vendor is selling special edition "Signature Series"
RoboSapiens, available in both Chrome and Blue, with designer Mark
Tilden's autograph.
I realized as I started to write this that I had missed my little
brother's seventh birthday. Nate, if you're reading this, remember
that your brother doesn't hate you, he just, uhm, was waiting for the
chrome one to come out. Actually, your brother just calculated
shipping at Sharper Image, and you're getting a white one from someone
else, because with shipping prices like that they can blow him. This
is the brutal world of finance I am teaching you about!

Robosapien Update with Video
03/06/2004 02:03 AMThere's a lot of buzz lately about Robosapien,
Mark Tilden's latest robotics venture. Dave Hrynkiw of Solarbotics
sent us this update:
"Solarbotics visited Mark Tilden at the Wow-Wee show room during
the
2004 New York City Toy Fair. The Robosapien has been getting very high
interest, garnering coverage in both the toy-trade and TIME magazine
issues released during the fair. It's presently on pre-sale at
BestBuy.com (on their website cover
page) for $99.99 (yes we know that Toys'R'Us
/ Amazon list it for $89.99, but we have it on good authority that
they'll most likely not be getting it in stock before BestBuy does). We
are fortunate to be the first to bring you video
footage of what the production Robosapien is capable of. Enjoy!"
The Solarbotics site also has plenty of photos
and video of the development and pre-production versions of the robot.

Gadget Madness has completed an arduous multi-week
"experience" with the RoboSapien that has ended (as many love affairs
do) with a music video. See the white robot ape chase away pigeons,
bask in the plastic-crackling sun, and co-opt the culture of black
robots - sort of a mechsploitation film, really. They've also
got a really nice collection of links at the end of their review for
those interested in hacking their RoboSapien to do even more than it
does out of the box.

GadgetMadness confirms the release date of WowWee's next set
of Robots and I have to say I'm disappointed. While I'm not looking
forward to paying $200 for a Robosapien V2, I'm most certainly not
looking forward to waiting until December before I can get my hands on
one. The RoboRaptor [pictured] will launch for $100 in August, which
might sooth me, although I may wait to go cheap in October and get one
of the ambiguously named Robotpets for $70 instead. Or I'll do what I
did with the first Robosapien and get one for my brother, then steal
it from him when I go home for the holidays.

Car hacking
12/19/2004 03:40 PMRace for the Ultimate Car Hacks By Michelle Deli People have been
tinkering with their cars since the first horseless buggy hit the
road. Now, thanks to onboard computerized systems that control
everything from engine management systems to radios, hackers can
customize their rides in ways that are likely to have Henry Ford doing
back flips in his grave. Feeding this need for speed with aftermarket
computer chips and simple upgraded components gneerates $25
million…

Hacking matter
Hacking matter
06/24/2004 06:41 AMI've been reading Wil McCarthy's book
Hacking Matter, which is a popularized version
of the serious study of quantum dots and the ability to build
pseudomatter using artificial atoms. How can one not like a book,
which contains wonderful sentences such as this one:
- Now we can create not only a thin film of goldlike
pseudomatter, but a three-dimensional solid with pseudogold dopant
atoms on the inside as well. Thus, we can generate a bulk material
with the mass of wickered silicon, but the physical, chemical, and
electrical properties of an otherwise-impossible gold/silicon
alloy.
I mean - even the minuscule thought of it is breathtaking! The
wonders of the universe! How could one not love this world, when so
many incredible things are about? This could, and would change the
face of the world as we know it. You just flick a switch, and you can
make a part of the wall transparent - or a light source - or a TV
screen - or gold. Whatever pleases you.
As an aside, I also found another very interesting paragraph (among
thousands, but this one has an ominous look):
- At his insistence, we filed an application with the
United States Patent and Trademark Office, and within a few weeks we'd
been contacted by the U.S. Air Force about the possibility of maybe
licensing it.
Note that even in the US, patents are generally considered secret and
proprietary, until a year of the filing date has passed. This is so
that the application can be amended, fixed, and just being kept secret
from the competitors, who might find a way to redesign around the
actual implementation (ideas are not patentable as such). Obviously,
the military is ignoring all that and have their own informants within
the US patent process... Somehow, that does not surprise me at
all.
Hacking Idol
Hacking Idol
05/17/2004 02:54 PMIt's great to finally hear someone talk about phone phreaking and
other attempts to subvert American Idol voting. Just
last week I was trolling the web looking for web-to-SMS gateways to
see if one could write a bot to vote-spam an American Idol contestant.
To hear that folks are using automated dialers to shut out voters
seems even more obvious. They should probably just make the voting a
900 number, at say, 50 cents a vote, in order to limit hackery but
people could still simply jam the lines with DoS attacks using
dialers.

Hacking Text
05/10/2004 04:21 PMCNET posts an inter
esting New York Times article about a group of European
researchers who have found ways to 'un-black' blacked out text in
documents like those released by the government in recent months by
using a process-of-elimination technique to figure out what words fit
under the obscured area.
The researchers showed their software at the conference, called
Eurocrypt, by analyzing a presidential briefing memorandum released in
April to the commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks. After
analyzing the document, they said they had high confidence the word
"Egyptian" had been blacked out in a passage describing the source of
an intelligence report stating that Osama Bin Ladin was planning an
attack in the United States.
