PHP.net: New Installation Instructions
08/16/2004 08:45 AMThere is a quick update from
the main PHP
website discussing the improvements to the "Installation and
Configuration" section of the
PHP manual.
New Installation Instructions
New Installation Instructions
08/14/2004 05:06 PMThe latest online version of the PHP Manual contains a completely
reorganized Installation and Configuration part, which is now splitted
up by platforms and servers to ease your first steps with PHP. The
manual Windows installation instructions are completely revised, and
now suggest you to set environment variables instead of moving files.
This way upgrades and configuration changes become more easier. Hereby
we would like to kindly ask everyone who published an article or howto
about installing PHP on Windows to revise those instructions according
to our latest guide. These new instructions got distributed with PHP
5.0.1 in both the source code and binary versions, and will continue
to be shipped with future versions of PHP.

08/31/2004 05:09 PMBlack Box Voting: Diebold GEMS
central tabulator contains a stunning security hole.
Manipulation technique found in the Diebold central tabulator --
1,000 of these systems are in place, and they count up to two million
votes at a time.
By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes
is created. This set of votes can be changed, so that it no longer
matches the correct votes. The voting system will then read the totals
from the bogus vote set. It takes only seconds to change the votes,
and to date not a single location in the U.S. has implemented security
measures to fully mitigate the risks.
If this is
true, it's perhaps the worst news yet in a saga that is monumentally
scary: the prospect that voting machines aren't just flawed, but
perhaps open to direct tampering.
No one should trust Diebold to begin with, given its
woeful security record,
a track record that should have disqualified it entirely from selling
voting machines. But if this is proved out -- and where are the
authorities, anyway? -- it ought to be the last straw.

Get first aid instructions in your cell
phone
06/24/2005 10:03 PMFinnish Red Cross has made a Java cell phone program
("midlet" for the technically inclined) which contains the
most basic first aid instructions in an easy-to-follow format with
pictures. The instructions are in Finnish only, but you can get yours
by texting "LATAA7 SPR ENSIAPU7" to number 17116. You need
to have WAP settings in place to make the download. I took a quick
look at it and it certainly seems like something I'm going to keep on
my phone for a long time.
(Though, be warned, the midlet costs 7€! Something that which
Helsingin Sanomat completely forgets to mention (boo hiss, this is
stupid), but that is declared on Red Cross's page...)
Just in time for the holidays, I would say.

The architecture of participation
The architecture of participation
08/17/2004 10:59 AM
Discussions about open source and innovation tend to cluster around
two opposing memes. One says that open source can't innovate; the
other that only open source can innovate. Both are wrong. Sometimes
large, well-funded R&D programs can achieve breakthroughs that
lone geniuses can't. And sometimes the reverse is true. Either way,
the real innovation of the open source movement is the architecture of
participation. It can help turn a good idea -- wherever it came from
-- into a best-quality implementation. Software companies that don't
choose the open source model have to find other ways to recruit and
reward participants. [Full story at
InfoWorld.com] [See also: other
open-source-related items]
The term 'open source' presumes that the essence of software is source
code, and that participation means hacking it. And that's true. But
the emergence of the services model creates modes of participation
that don't require access to source. Back in 2000, Rael Dornfest
introduced the term
open services in order to make that distinction.

Code v.2: Participation Requested
Code v.2: Participation Requested
03/19/2005 03:27 AMA new web-based experiment is being undertaken by Creative Commons'
Chairman, Lawrence Lessig. In 1999,
Professor Lessig wrote Code and
Other Laws of Cyberspace. After five years in print and five years
of changes in law, technology, and the context in which they reside,
he realized that Code needed an update, so he opened it up to the
world to help. Using wiki technologies provided by JotSpot, you, or anyone else can contribute updates to
Code.
Once the the project nears completion, Professor Lessig will take the
contents of the wiki and ready it for publication. The resulting book,
Code v.2, will be published in late 2005 by Basic
Books. All royalties, including the book advance, will be donated
to Creative Commons.
An excerpts from the site:
In the six years since its first publication, cyberspace has evolved
to the point where Code now needs an update. In the five years since
Code v.1, cyberspace has also evolved to enable new forms of digital
creativity. In applying these new tools to the now-old text, we're
harnessing the knowledge, creativity, and experience of the community,
hopefully to build a better update than could have been done alone.
This type of project was not possible until very recently: it is an
experiment in technology and collaborative creativity. We're excited
to see what happens.
This project also debuts the beta release of a newly
branded Wiki
license. The license works like Attribution-Shar
eAlike, however, attribution can be set to the wiki, in this case
Code v.2 Wiki, rather than each individual author.
We've made this slight modification to the attribution clause in this
beta version, and used it for this wiki, but we won't release the
license generally till we've had the ordinary time for discussion.
