Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
06/03/2004 03:44 AM
The meat of the article is: “…Wireless security recommendations: Change your system defaults – everyone knows them. Change the Admin and SNMP passwords. Change the IP network range. Also change the Server Set ID (SSID). The SSID is a unique identifier for your wireless hub/router. The default SSID is set in the factory is definitely not unique. Don’t broadcast the SSID. While you can change the default ID, that does little if your hub or router broadcasts that SSID. Enable Wireless Encryption. WEP or something similar can be compromised, but it makes it significantly more difficult to compromise your information. The larger the key length, the better. Enable Shared Key Authentication. The default Open System setting lets anyone connect to your network with very minimal effort. Change your SNMP Community String. Create a Community String like it is a strong password. Enable MAC Address Codes. Again, this makes it more difficult for a hacker to compromise your home network. Set Wireless LAN cards to Infrastructure Mode. Most cards have the default Ad Hoc mode, which is less secure. Don’t rely only on the broadband firewall. A firewall at your home’s Internet entry point is critical. However, you should still have personal firewalls on all computers on your network, in case something makes it through your home’s firewall or a hacker does make it onto your network.”

Rio Japan Wireless Speakers

Rio Japan Wireless Speakers 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

rio_wireless_sx.jpg imageI think we can all get with wireless connections to our speakers from our portable music players—it's mostly pointless, but potentially handy, what with the ability to switch songs around from your pocket (I tried this for a while with an iPod and an iTrip, until I found myself virtually tethered, always turning to get the best transmission, which sort of defeats the purpose). So these new speakers from Rio Japan are a fine idea, even if the dongle that is designed to plug into the Rio Carbon is almost as big as the player itself. The reflector on the top of the speakers, with the Rio logo silk-screened onto it to float in the air... that's a bit much, really. But wireless is good—this $400 speaker set will surely make some Rio fan very happy.

60,000 Take Home Numbers Wireless

60,000 Take Home Numbers Wireless 02/13/2004 05:52 AM
While most stories about wireless local number portability in the US focused on who was switching between which wireless carriers (and what problems they were having), the fact that you could also take your home number and port it over to your mobile phone received much less coverage. Now, it turns out that about 60,000 people took advantage of this rule and took their home landline wireless. Not a huge number, but still noteworthy (and some say the numbers would be much higher without all these glitches). Wireless carriers also claim (though, without evidence) that the number of wireline customers requesting to move a number is growing - so it may simply be that many people didn't realize they could do this. Of course, the people who are most likely to be interested in ditching a landline probably already have a mobile phone - so it's not clear they really need to port their landline number over. I'm also curious how many of those 60,000 were Manhattan residents who were drooling over a coveted (and previously unavailable) status-symbol 212 mobile phone number.

JVC TH-SW5 Home Theater System with
Wireless Rears
08/03/2004 09:03 AM

jvc_th_sw5.jpg image

JVC has a new set of home theater systems out in Japan that transmit sound to the read speakers wireless via radio; a radio that, unfortunately, broadcasts on the 2.4GHz spectrum -- the same frequency as Wi-Fi. The TH-SW5 otherwise looks like a solid system, but perhaps another model at 5GHz or 900MHz would be optimal. Or maybe -- stay with me -- user selectable frequency. There aren't plans to release it here, though, to my knowledge, but I'd hate to be the Japanese consumer who has to choose between their network and their speakers.

My dream wireless speakers receive audio and power through a fixed microwave beam. If you couldn't navigate through the matrix of flesh-searing invisible conduits, you wouldn't be worthy to watch the extended edition of Groundhog Day.
