standards and Web applications
A few weeks ago, I attended the W3C Workshop on Web Applications
and Compound documents in San Jose. Sarah Allen presented on behalf of
Laszlo, with a position paper on Web UI titled The Future of the Web
is not the Past of Windows.
This was my first exposure to a standards body meeting, and some of
the perspectives were surprising. Attendees included representatives
of Adobe (who hosted the workshop), Microsoft, IBM, Sun, the Mozilla
Foundation, Opera, OpenWave, Nokia, France Telecom and more.
The meeting seemed to have been motivated by the growing interest
in supporting interactive applications on the Web, and the challenges
to the W3C standards posed by proprietary solutions in this area such
as Microsoft's XAML.

About a month ago I had a little run-in with 3 Homeland Security
agents, 3 Seattle Police officers, 2 security guards and a German
Shepherd while I was at a local park with my camera. The DHS agent
told me that it's illegal for me to take pictures of federal property.
The ACLU of Washington disagrees. My blog is my attempt to chronicle
this outragous situation and bring some common sense and public
awareness to it.

Homeland Security: North Bergen Style
05/24/2004 10:07 PMTom Rowan, the webmaster of NorthBergenPD.Com, is a patriotic guy.
North Bergen, where Tom lives and where he once served as a cop, is
part of Hudson County, New Jersey. Hudson County is right across the
river from lower Manhattan. Area residents experienced 9/11 up close
and personal. Many could see the attack from their windows-- or from
streets and parks. A large number of people from Hudson County worked
in the World Trade Center. Many of them died that day. Almost everyone
knew someone who was a victim, or who was connected to one. Hence
local support for the War on Terror has been strong. When accessing
Tom Rowan's website you pass through a 9/11 memorial which includes a
graphic of a weeping eagle. So it seems odd that North Bergen township
officials are trying to shut down Rowan's website by declaring it a
"threat to Homeland Security".

07/12/2004 10:59 AMNewsweek reports: "American counterterrorism officials, citing what
they call "alarming" intelligence about a possible Qaeda strike inside
the United States this fall, are reviewing a proposal that could allow
for the postponement of the November presidential election in the
event of such an attack... The prospect that Al Qaeda might seek to
disrupt the U.S. election was a major factor behind last week's terror
warning by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge... Ridge's department
last week asked the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel to
analyze what legal steps would be needed to permit the postponement of
the election were an attack to take place."
Homeland Security finds SEVIS successful
Homeland Security finds SEVIS successful
09/02/2004 11:38 AM
After one year of implementation, officials from
the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement office ( ICE ) and the
Department of Homeland Security
expressed confidence in the foreign-student-tracking
Student and Exchange Visitor Information System ( SEVIS ).
Over the past year campuses and college
information vendors have
implemented policies and
programs to implement SEVIS, while sometimes
criticizing the system for errors and intrusiveness.
Michael Garcia, ICE's assistant secretary, said SEVIS simplifies what
was a manual process. Agents at airports and other ports of entry and
consular officials abroad can now check students through SEVIS and
terrorist watch lists.
"This type of visa fraud was much harder to detect in the old
paper-based system," he said.
