"A remote iChat participant can send a "link" that references a
program on the local system. If the "link" is activated by clicking on
it, and the "link" points to a local program, then the program will
run. iChat has been modified so that "links" of this type will open a
Finder window that displays the program instead of running it."

iChat Stream Icon streams your mug via iSight or the
like as your iChat icon, live to anyone who has the (mis)fortune of
having you in their buddy list.
I've always kept my buddy list visible, right there at the right of my
desktop. Being virtual, it provides a sense of folks being
around--virtual cube-mates, if you will. Now, thanks to the technical
know-how of Andreas Pardeike, I can watch them pick their noses, see
what they're having for lunch--hopefully not in that order--or just
watch them bobbling and jiggling about on my desktop...

I do is talk to them once a day, send them a file or three every other

iChat as phone

02/10/2004 02:42 AMHere's something I hadn't thought of: using a bluetooth headset with iChat. I already use iChat a
great deal for communicating remotely with coworkers, but I usually
wear big stereo headphones and use the iSight as the mic. Instead I
could be wirelessly talking and listening using something like
this.
I always knew iChat coupled with an iSight was a killer combo and I
greatly prefer it over regular conference calls, but with a bluetooth
headset it becomes even more useful for one-on-one conversations
between other people with the same setup. Heck, if everyone you knew
had a powerbook, iSight, and a bluetooth headset, this would kick ass
all over Voice Over IP systems.

High-End iChat
High-End iChat
04/30/2004 07:19 PMI should confess that I am the worst kind of obsessive high-end audio
weenie. Fortunately, it’s my only really expensive hobby; I
distinctly prefer beer to champagne. Anyhow, this creates a problem:
when you upgrade your system to get better sound, what do you do with
the old stuff? High-end gear tends to last more or less forever, and
unlike computers, is usually 80% as good as what you replace it with.
So, I’ve used some of that stuff to cobble together a home-office
system. I’m taking the audio feed out of my PowerBook via USB to a
(now apparently discontinued, sigh)
Stereo-Link D/A converter, then
through very decent
Linn
interconnects to an all-tube (and very beautiful)
Cary Audio Design “Rocket 88”
power amp, driving a pair of the original
Totem “Model One”
speakers (a dozen years old now). You can bet that I’m happy that
iTunes now includes a lossless music encoder; I’m going to have to
go back and junk all the existing MP3s I’ve ripped and grab ’em
again. Anyhow, I just had my first audio
iChat talk since I got this
wired up, with
Paul Hoffman,
on the subject of Atom and the IETF. It was astounding, remarkable,
unlike any mere “telephone” experience. Had I shut my eyes and
you’d told me that Paul was sitting across the desk, I would have
believed you.
