Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage
06/15/2004 11:54 AM

linksys_nslu.jpg imageWhile they're promoting it with Maxtor, there's nothing stopping you from using Linksys's new Network Storage Link (NSLU2) with any external USB hard drive to turn it into a network storage device (not unlike the Mirra or other backup units). Storage Link even provides passworded web-access to files and multiple users (although they don't get into the details of how multi-user sharing will work). Since the Storage Link works via RJ-45 (regular ol' Ethernet), there's nothing preventing you from attaching it to a wireless router and using it over WiFi, either (albeit at lower speeds than a wired network, of course). Even better, it sounds like you can continue to add additional USB hard drives to the device to increase storage as you go along. Not bad for $100.

Future of the Palm OS

Future of the Palm OS 06/02/2004 08:53 AM
The name of the conference room at PalmSource was "Absolute Panic"' -- but the Sunnyvale company's chief executive was a picture of calm when I stopped by a couple of weeks ago. Dave Nagel's confidence may have been shaken a bit since then, especially given Tuesday's announcement that Sony, one of the company's important customers, was on its way toward aban doning the arrangement (Mercury News). But it would be premature, at best, to assume that the Sony move is a sign of doom. More...

Palm drops the Mac

Palm drops the Mac 02/12/2004 06:20 PM
According to this article at Brighthand, Palm have announced that Palm OS 6 (codenamed Cobalt) will not support the Mac platform —
...PalmSource isn't developing a Mac version of the Palm Desktop. As the way the PIM apps work has changed significantly, this means Mac users won't be able to HotSync without third-party software.
This is a blow for Mac-owning Palm PDA users, although it's stoked those old fires suggesting that Apple may be ready to announce a PDA of it's own. John Manzione writes on MacNetv2
Apple will deflect this Palm bullet because they will soon introduce a new product that will do for the handheld market what the iPod has done for MP3 players.
A Jonathan Ive-designed PDA? Now I'd love to see that.
