Thanks to Tyler and Mohammed and everybody else that sent in pictures of these am3 Anime Vending machines for the Advance Movie player. I'm fairly sure that eh one of the left (the Pokemon-branded one) is the newer model, while the one on the right is the older, less full-featured model that has been out for a while. I love that in an all-digital machine, they've somehow still found it necessary to incorporate a giant crank dial on the front.

Japanese company am3 has set up anime vending machines in 20 locations around the country in test program to sell content for its moderately succesful 'Advance Movie' peripheral for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance. Different from the Game Boy Advance Video cartridges available here, the Advance Movie uses a rewriteable Smart Media card, which consumers can fill up with movies that cost between 100 (~$1) and 400 yen(~$4), depending on their content (and presumably length). So far all the titles are anime, but there's nothing stopping other types of programs to be sold. In fact, am3 is already planning to sell data for four other peripherals it sells; Advance Comic, for manga viewing; Advance Picture, for images; Advance Music, for durrrrr; and Advance Navi, for maps.

Why they can't just have one peripheral that does all those things, I don't know. Oh, and if any of our Japanese readers can snap a pic of the vending machines and send it to us, that'd be dandy.

Cnet says that Humans beat AI in robot wars. It's not really a war per se, but rather it's an online competition called the SodaRace which pits humans against virtual robots. It seems that Canadian humans won the first round by creating a machine using trial and error. It may not be a fair test of man vs machine, but interesting nevertheless. If you would like, you can also create and play around with your own soda robots using the sodaconstructor to test your intelligence abilities. You may have seen the sodaconstructor before, but it's the competition of human vs. ai that makes it very interesting. It may be hard to overcome human craftyness but like recent chess matches demonstrate, it may instead be hard to beat the computer. It runs on Java and it's cool. Check it out.

It appears that making sure gambling is fair is much more important than making sure our elections are fair. One of the defenses pulled out by those who want to keep going with existing electronic voting machines is that no one seems to complain about electronic gambling machines. Perhaps that's because electronic gambling machines are held to a much higher standard than electronic voting machines. This NY Times editorial lists six different ways in which gambling machines in Nevada are under much more scrutiny than electronic voting machines. These include things like the fact that the state requires copies of the source code of all electronic gambling software, as well as their stringent licensing procedure for any company that wishes to sell electronic gambling machines. Employees of any such company have to go through background checks to make sure they have no criminal record. Considering that Diebold had convict ed felons involved with their electronic voting systems - you wonder if a similar licensing procedure might make sense for voting machines as well.

When CDs first came out, they were marketed as being nearly indestructible. We were told we'd be able to throw them around like Frisbees, run over them with cars, and beat on them with a baseball bat and they'd still play perfectly. Obviously, that turned out to be a bit less than truthful, and most people know to take at least some level of care for their CDs and DVDs. Still, now that they've been around for a while, people are noticing the problem of "CD rot" where, for no clear reason, the data layer of the disc just starts to go bad. Of course, the simple solution is to make backup copies (and backup copies of the backup copies for when those rot). However, the music industry is already upset enough with the idea that people can legally make a personal copy of a CD, and would prefer, when your CD rots away, that you just go out and buy another one.

Asono has released a tweaked version of their 'Mica' wearable MP3 player. Called the 'Play,' the unit is almost exactly the same as the Mica—it still looks like a little handbag—but the LCD screen on the bottom of the Mica has been replaced with two, iPod shuffle-like lights at the bottom in the Play. Navigation is don't through sound, including (they say), searching of folders and EQ adjustment. I can't imagine how'd they allow folder search with two LEDs and some beeps, but I didn't think you could build furniture out of sawdust, either, and the Scandinavians proved me wrong.
