More Sony VAIO Pocket Details 05/11/2004 07:49 AM
AkibaLive has some more information on the VAIO Pocket, the upcoming 20GB iPod-fighter from Sony. Looks like that screen is nicer than I first thought, with a 320 by 256 color display that has an integrated touchscreen with 'G-Sense' for navigating through the menus--certainly they've given some thought to the...

Sony Pocket Bit Pro, 2GB USB Hard Drive

Sony Pocket Bit Pro, 2GB USB Hard Drive 06/21/2004 09:06 AM

pocketbitpro.jpg imageI could have sworn we already mentioned this, but the Oracle of Search says otherwise. Apparently, Sony's getting into the "mini hard drive masquerading as USB flash drive" game with their new Pocket Bit Pro USD-2G, a simple-enough little device that differentiates itself from the crowd mostly by its automatic data synchronization feature. By pressing the AutoSync button on the drive (you might want to plug it into the computer first), the Pocket Bit Pro will back up pre-selected folders and sub-folders, saving versions (as space allows) up to ten generations back. Pretty slick stuff, but you'll pay the Sony premium for the convenience -- the Pocket Bit Pro will retail for over $300 when it ships in July.

Sony Rumored To Reenter PDA Market With

Sony Rumored To Reenter PDA Market With
Pocket PC
08/09/2004 03:20 PM

img_home_ux50.jpg imageOm Malik passes on a rumor that Sony may be reentering the US PDA market with another Clië - this time running Windows Pocket PC operating system. Although there's not much to go on at the moment - just the overheard comments of a Sony executive - it would be an interesting turn. The PDA market in general is stagnating, with Palm's share slowing slipping in most segments. But it also seems weird to scrap five+ years of PalmOS experience just to move back into the PDA segment with an operating system that plenty of others are already leaving behind, as well.

And a Symbian PDA? It could happen - Nokia is working on one - but for whatever reason I just don't see that coming from Sony unless it's in the form of a smartphone. Overall, though, I consider the whole thing unlikely.

Sony HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Review

Sony HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Review 07/12/2004 10:34 AM

hmpa1_review.jpg imageI should warn you: I'm sort of lukewarm on portable video players altogether. I don't commute to work, and when I did, there was enough jostling and train swapping to make anything that required focused attention, like reading books or watching video, a fractured and annoying experience. But still, there is an opportunity for a video player like the HMP-A1 to be useful -- I just don't think this would be the one I would buy.

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison 06/09/2004 09:10 AM

pocket_vs_ipod.jpg imageIf you want to stumble through the Babelfish translation, AV Watch Japan has a review of the Sony VAIO Pocket, the hard disk-based music player that's getting the most buzz as Sony's attempt to create an iPod-killer. Among other things, they compare sizes (!), and really that battery nodule on the back of the VAIO Pocket does it a disservice in pictures -- it's not nearly as big as it seems. Of course, the chink in the VAIO Pocket's armor is its inability to play any format but Sony's proprietary ATRAC3, meaning every song you want to copy to the VAIO Pocket has to be converted. 20GB of conversion is going to be sucky, but manageable; it's really just the principle of the thing (even Apple, head up their AAC, lets the iPod play MP3).

Another Sony HDR-FX1 Photo 09/08/2004 07:22 AM

1080i_model.jpg imageJoel asked me to post this image of a Japanese Sony model holding that sexy new Sony HDR-FX1 camera - the one that records to 1080i. I guess he's just considering how many more HDTV amateur pornos/nature documentaries can now be created in a quality like never seen before. He'll need to wait until at least October 15th to see new video of Madagascar's steaming jungles, though, as it won't even be released in Japan until then. [I find jungles sexy and I'm not afraid to admit it. I blame Duran Duran. -ed.]

MSN Music can be played on Pocket PC

MSN Music can be played on Pocket PC 09/04/2004 05:11 PM

I have a Pocket PC and I consider it the biggest waste of money I have ever spent for a gadget. So the news that you can play music on it that is purchased from MSN is encouraging. This is really no big deal as I have played music on it purchased from other sources for a long time. With only a 128 meg memory stick I don't really think it's worth the hassle though to me honest with you. [Engadget]
