Email Sender ID: Exactly what's wrong
with the license?

Larry Rosen, the attorney who has been negotiating with Microsoft on behalf of the OSI for changes to the restrictive patent licensing attached to Sender ID, was asked recently to explain in a concise manner exactly what it is about the Microsoft licensing for its proposed standard that makes it unacceptable to the open source/free software worlds. Rosen's reply makes interesting reading for all of us.

The open source version of Sendmail recently suspended its planned implementation of the anti-spam weaponry collectively known as Sender-ID due to concerns about Microsoft's licensing terms. In response to this and other concerns being voiced in the free software/open source communities as Sender-ID is being considered as a new standard by the IETF, Microsoft has revised its Sender ID license to make it more acceptable to open source developers.

We received a lot of interesting feedback in comments and email as a result of the story we ran last week on Email Sender ID: the hype and the reality." Many of those who contacted us are intimately acquainted with the subject matter, having had personal, first-hand involvement in the process to date. One of those was Yakov Shafronovich, who co-chaired the Anti-Spam Research Group during 2003, when the group was considering this very issue, prior to passing it on to the IETF. That led to an exchange of email messages during which I got a much clearer look at how Microsoft is once again embracing, extending, and attempting to encumber open source technology. Doggone it, it looks like Kerberos all over again.

There is currently some confusion over the status of Sender ID in the IETF's MARID working group which has been considering the proposed standard. NewsForge has gone to directly to the source to clarify reports that Sender ID is a dead proposal. It is not. It is very much alive. Here is what we've learned.

There are a number of promising technical papers under consideration by the Internet Engineering Task Force which deal with the ever-growing problem of spam. Most of them seek to attack the spam problem obliquely rather than head on. These techniques avoid looking at message content in an attempt to determine if an email is spam or not. Instead, they focus on authenticating the sender. Since most spam comes from forged email addresses, eliminating such forgery would be a big step up in the fight against spam. In this article we'll look at the evolution of the current Sender ID proposals, and we'll also examine some of the non-technical barriers which might prevent any of the proposed solutions from ever working.

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PM
The big discussion that I've been having with a few different people over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that Google is developing an email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic - which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out - and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the ability to better search through their own email. I could see a certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well, it could be a real hit.

Too Much Fuss Over Sender ID

Too Much Fuss Over Sender ID 09/02/2004 02:06 AM
"Why all the fuss when a spam-free channel is already available and working 24/7 -- without infrastructure changes?" asks UseBestMail author Martel Firing. The Sender-ID system proposed by IETF and backed by Microsoft, Cloudmark, Symantec, and others requires infrastructure changes and may take years, while UseBestMail's spam-free channel is infrastructure neutral and is here now. He then goes on to question sender-ID's blacklist, sender reputation and law enforcement models, which he maintains won't do much to prevent spam given the proven ingenuity of the spammers themselves. AOL Signs Off From Sender ID

AOL Signs Off From Sender ID 09/17/2004 06:43 AM
America Online has decided not to fully support Microsoft's Sender ID spam-fighting plan after the Internet Engineering Task Force and the open-source community expressed intellectual property concerns. "AOL will now not be moving forward with full deployment of the Sender ID protocol," spokesman Nicholas Graham said in a statement sent via e-mail Thursday. Instead, the Dulles, Virginia-based Internet service provider will support only the Sender Policy Framework to fight spam by verifying the source of e-mail sent to its users, he said.

AOL's rejection comes a week after an IETF group considering Sender ID as a standard said the proposal needed rewriting. Earlier this month, the open-source groups Apache Software Foundation and Debian Project dismissed Sender ID because the license would prevent them from supporting the technology. AOL is concerned about the lack of acceptance for Sender ID in the open-source community, Graham said. Additionally, the ISP is afraid that recent changes to Sender ID will make it incompatible with the original SPF specification, he said. AOL had endorsed Sender ID when it was submitted to the IETF in June.
