Too Much Fuss Over Sender ID
Too Much Fuss Over Sender ID
09/02/2004 02:06 AM"Why all the fuss when a spam-free channel is already available and
working 24/7 -- without infrastructure changes?" asks UseBestMail
author Martel Firing. The Sender-ID system proposed by IETF and backed
by Microsoft, Cloudmark, Symantec, and others requires infrastructure
changes and may take years, while UseBestMail's spam-free channel is
infrastructure neutral and is here now. He then goes on to question
sender-ID's blacklist, sender reputation and law enforcement models,
which he maintains won't do much to prevent spam given the proven
ingenuity of the spammers themselves. [PRWEB Sep 2, 2004]

Spammers love Sender ID
Spammers love Sender ID
09/10/2004 05:51 AMALTHOUGH Microsoft's anti-spam sender-ID is disliked by Open Sources,
it is providing popular with the very people it is targeted against.
According to E-mail security outfit MX Logic, spammers are taking to
sender-id faster than an IT journalist to whisky. The science is
pretty easy. Under the Sender Policy Framework (SPF), companies
publish a list of authorised E-mail servers for the domains they
control. This is used by those receiving E-mail to make sure the
purported server of origin matches the one listed in the message
header.

Email Sender ID: It's like Kerberos all
over again
09/02/2004 08:00 AMWe received a lot of interesting feedback in comments and email as a
result of the story we ran last week on Email Sender ID: the hype and
the reality." Many of those who contacted us are intimately acquainted
with the subject matter, having had personal, first-hand involvement
in the process to date. One of those was Yakov Shafronovich, who
co-chaired the Anti-Spam Research Group during 2003, when the group
was considering this very issue, prior to passing it on to the IETF.
That led to an exchange of email messages during which I got a much
clearer look at how Microsoft is once again embracing, extending, and
attempting to encumber open source technology. Doggone it, it looks
like Kerberos all over again.

Spammers Hijack Sender ID
09/10/2004 06:27 PMOn the heels of the repudiation of Microsoft's Sender ID
E-mail-authentication scheme last week by two major open-source
software groups, spammers are doing the opposite: They're embracing
the very standard intended to curb their abuses.
According to E-mail security vendor MX Logic Inc., spammers are trying
to make their messages appear more legitimate by adopting the Sender
Policy Framework (SPF), which recently became part of Microsoft's
Sender ID proposal.

which enables identification of the source of an email before it is
sent. However according to US mag PC Week, the licence for sender ID
might breach open source requirements and Linux developers would not
be able to use it.

08/27/2004 01:37 PMThere are a number of promising technical papers under consideration
by the Internet Engineering Task Force which deal with the
ever-growing problem of spam. Most of them seek to attack the spam
problem obliquely rather than head on. These techniques avoid looking
at message content in an attempt to determine if an email is spam or
not. Instead, they focus on authenticating the sender. Since most spam
comes from forged email addresses, eliminating such forgery would be a
big step up in the fight against spam. In this article we'll look at
the evolution of the current Sender ID proposals, and we'll also
examine some of the non-technical barriers which might prevent any of
the proposed solutions from ever working.
