The Establishment Press gets it

The Establishment Press gets it 05/12/2004 02:44 AM
The lead editorial in the New York Times today: The Abu Ghraib Spin The administration and its Republican allies appear to have settled on a way to deflect attention from the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib: accuse Democrats and the news media of overreacting, then pile all of the remaining responsibility onto officers in the battlefield, far away from President Bush and his political team. That cynical approach was on display yesterday morning in the second Abu Ghraib hearing in the Senate, a body that finally seemed to be assuming its responsibility for overseeing the executive branch after a year of silently watching the bungled Iraq occupation.... It was Mr. Bush and Mr. Rumsfeld, not General Sanchez, who failed to anticipate the violence and chaos that followed the invasion of Iraq, and sent American soldiers out to handle it without the necessary resources, manpower and training. The lead editorial in the Washington Post today: Protecting the System THE BUSH administration still seeks to mislead Congress and the public about the policies that contributed to the criminal abuse of prisoners in Iraq. Yesterday's smoke screen was provided by Stephen A. Cambone, undersecretary of defense for intelligence. Mr. Cambone assured the Senate Armed Services Committee that the administration's policy had always been to strictly observe the Geneva Conventions in Iraq; that all procedures for interrogations in Iraq were sanctioned under the conventions; and that the abuses of detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison were consequently the isolated acts of individuals. These assertions are contradicted by International Red Cross and Army investigators, by U.S. generals overseeing the prisoners, and by Mr. Cambone himself. Start with adherence to the Geneva Conventions, which Mr. Cambone's boss, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, has publicly derided as outdated and which the administration acknowledges are not being adhered to at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prison. Mr. Cambone said yesterday that the administration considered all detainees at Abu Ghraib to be covered by either the Third or Fourth Geneva Convention. But he also confirmed a statement by Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller, the current commander at Abu Ghraib, that techniques officially available for interrogation have included hooding, sleep deprivation and stress positions. An official report by the Red Cross confirms that those techniques as well as harsher ones have been used systematically, and not only at Abu Ghraib. The report says they have been employed by tactical military intelligence...

Weird-o SMS behaviour

Weird-o SMS behaviour 02/05/2005 09:13 PM
Outi sent me yesterday a sweet text message about mice. True to the nature of these beasts, that SMS started multiplying: for some reason, T-Mobile (yes, I'm in Germany) has decided to deliver that message to me eleven times within the past 24 hours. Even though it has been sent only once.

It seems that every SMS sent from Finland is replaced by this same SMS message - so if you've tried to contact me, I have only seen a message about a mouse from Outi. Sorry. You gotta try and resend, if you had anything to say (or just email me).

Weirdosity++.

Microsoft has no licence for bad

Microsoft has no licence for bad
behaviour
09/03/2004 09:55 AM
Microsoft's demands for control of essential Internet standards belie its commitments to security for all. The fight against spam is both practical and symbolic. It directly affects our ability to benefit from the Net, and it epitomises the balance between free access and control. A new standard, Sender ID, makes it easier to reject email that doesn't come from its purported source. It's not the magic bullet, but it's certainly part of the gun. Yet Microsoft is actively hindering the adoption of this standard. Uniquely among Internet standards, Microsoft's restrictive licence is plainly incompatible with open source, in theory and in practice. It can do this, the company says, because it holds intellectual property -- in the form of pending patents -- on basic ideas used in the standard, and thus it is free to demand that anyone who incorporates the standard in a product must comply with Microsoft's conditions. Ask the company why it needs to make this demand and no good answer is forthcoming.

I have a question about weird powerbook
behaviour: ...
03/13/2003 10:22 AM

I have a question about weird powerbook behaviour: it's making strange noises. Like, really strange. Every keyboard or mouse event seems to generate a very, very quiet click from inside the machine; moving your finger around the trackpad sounds like a geiger counter.

It's not the audio system -- turning the speaker off doesn't stop it happening. I don't think it's software-related, either (certainly my iBook didn't make these noises, and neither does the desktop G4 in the next room). It doesn't sound like the drive seeking. It might be some kind of electrical interference directly tweaking the speakers, but I don't particularly want to start opening up the laptop and snipping wires to find out. Anyone got any ideas? It's driving me nuts -- I get paranoid when computers do things I can't explain ...

Update: I found other Powerbook owners complaining of the same thing at Powerbook Zone, so it's not just my imagination. Weirdly, the noises stop when the machine is running on battery juice and the CPU is throttled back. So it appears to be something related to the CPU cooling system ...
