A German manufacturer of technology commonly used in personal computers has agreed to plead guilty and pay a $160 million fine for engaging in an international price-fixing conspiracy that drove up computer prices, the Justice Department announced Wednesday. Infineon Technologies AG "conspired with unnamed manufacturers" to boost prices of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) sold to computer makers, the Justice Department said.

Government antitrust lawyers identified the firms directly affected by the conspiracy as Dell, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Apple, IBM, and Gateway.

"This is very good news for consumers and for businesses," said R. Hewitt Pate, assistant attorney general for the Antitrust Division.

Officials said some computer makers were forced to increase product prices because of the conspiracy, while others decreased the amount of memory used in some products. Infineon and other DRAM manufacturers, including Samsung, Hynix and Micron Technologies, also face civil lawsuits in San Francisco.

The Justice Department refused to name firms that allegedly conspired with Infineon in the criminal case announced Wednesday. The $160 million fine is the third largest price-fixing penalty in U.S. history.

Two BusinessWeek articles (via gooGuide): Google's Gaggle of Problems. 'sources say Yahoo has grown tired of Google.com's popularity and may soon cut its tie to the company. "The portals have started to get fed up. Over the last three years, Google has stolen 40% of the search market directly at the expense of AOL, MSN, and Yahoo," says Jason Kellerman, CEO of search-technology company LookSmart, which has a deal with MSN.' 'measurements by Web traffic tracker Nielsen NetRatings, AOL [which uses Google's results and ads] and Google.com together get six times the search traffic of Yahoo, the closest competitor.' Will Froogle Be a Google for Shoppers? "As a Google fanatic -- my wife claims I sometimes murmur Google in my sleep -- I was too excited to wait for the final release [of Froogle]. Beyond Blue (BusinessWeek Online) 04/08/2005 06:16 PM
BusinessWeek Online - It was over a lunch in Cincinnati two years ago that IBM Chief Executive Samuel J. Palmisano got his first inkling of Big Blue's next act. Palmisano was talking business with A.G. Lafley, CEO of Procter & Gamble Co. , one of IBM's big customers. At one point, Lafley asked Palmisano to estimate how many of P&G's 100,000 employees it truly needed to keep on its payroll. When Palmisano didn't venture a guess, Lafley stunned him by saying that P&G might be able to get by with only a quarter of its workforce. ...

BusinessWeek Online - Cell phones are indispensable when you're on the road. But back in the office, they mostly get in the way. They ring at odd times, and if you use a headset with your office phone, they're awkward to answer. They certainly do nothing to improve your efficiency. The best solution would be to make your cell phone and land line work together better instead of competing for your attention. I've been looking at three different types of gadgets that let you do just that. The caveat: You'll need particular phones or wireless providers to use them. ...
