VOIP: Be Very Afraid

VOIP: Be Very Afraid 05/05/2004 09:37 AM
Here's what Michael Powell had to say about voice over IP to the main cable industry trade show:

"If you're a big incumbent and you've sort of enjoyed a competitive advantage . . . you, in my opinion, ought to be terrified."

"I think it's going to be the very, very best and biggest breakthrough in our ambitions and dreams about competition ever."

You tell 'em, Mike!  Seriously, Powell is dead-on here.  He understands what VOIP represents, and the significance of the regulatory issues it raises for the FCC.  As do the key FCC staffers, who I talk with periodically.

However, I've been disappointed that Powell's FCC has so far taken a nibbling, incremental approach to VOIP.  They are still putting off the hard issues, while addressing what look like easy cases.  In reality, those cases (like the AT&T petition the FCC recently denied) aren't so easy.  And the FCC's tentative, limited decisions will still be taken as definitive by those in the marketplace.  I'm convinced the FCC is committed to addressing the fundamental VOIP policy issues squarely, but that commitment needs to translate into action.

A good indicator will be how quickly the FCC moves forward, either through formal decisionmaking or public activities, after the comment cycle on its major voice over IP proceeding closes at the end of June.

Afraid to Breath Out

Afraid to Breath Out 04/09/2004 05:30 PM

I love garlic but I love miniture garlic more.  What is miniture garlic?

I am not sure if they are really garlic but they are spicy and has that piercing and lingering taste similar to garlic.  In Korea, they are called Dal-lae.  They are sold at Korean markets but only for short period of time late spring/early summer.  They are hard to prepare too.  What you see above took my wife an hour.

Best way to eat them is raw with a touch of dressing made with soy sauce, vinegar, red pepper, sugar, and sesame oil.  Very very delicious if you like spicy food.  Only downside is that, as with garlic, breathing out calls for courage.

What The RIAA Is Really Afraid Of: Its
Own Demise

What The RIAA Is Really Afraid Of: Its
Own Demise
03/30/2005 06:50 AM
It's no secret that the RIAA has been known to fudge the numbers to prove their point that file sharing hurts sales. What was never entirely clear, however, was why they simply refused to believe any study that sugge sted file sharing could help sales. If anyone were interested in such studies, it should be the RIAA -- because they would show them a great way to increase sales (which should be their goal). However, Mark Cuban makes an excellent point about why the RIAA is acting the way they are, despite these studies. Even if sales are up, it's not the sales of RIAA members. Cuban suggests that sales are probably up, but it's the independent musicians who are making up the difference, while RIAA member sales are holding steady, or slightly decreasing. Remember, the RIAA represents the big music labels -- not the tiny ones. Almost everyone agrees that the real impact of file sharing is that it spreads the success outward. Rather than just a few mega-rockstars, you get many more successful musicians. The big record labels have built their business models on the idea of just a few mega-rockstars dominating the market. What this means, then, is that the RIAA members are losing marketshare. It's not overall sales that are down, it's just that the competition from smaller players is taking away sales from the big labels -- which is why that coalition of independent artists is supporting the Grokster side of the case. If this theory is true (and a lot of the evidence does seem to support it), then what the RIAA is really fighting about is not saving the recording industry. It's about saving the RIAA.

New Study Says People Not Afraid To Shop
Online

New Study Says People Not Afraid To Shop
Online
05/10/2004 01:30 PM
It was just last week (wasn't it?) that we had a study (paid for by a company that wanted to provide secure transaction software) saying that people were going to shop less online due to fear of fraud and scams like phishing (which have nothing to do with shopping online). This week, thanks to some research paid for by PayPal/eBay we have a study saying exactly the opposite. It turns out, according to this study, that the increase in stories about these scams means that shoppers are much more sophisticated and careful about buying online, but they're planning to buy more and many feel the internet is much safer for shopping these days. In other words, you can't trust either study as both are impossibly biased by the money that paid for them.
