Quentin Tarantino Admits That Film

Quentin Tarantino Admits That Film
Copying Isn't Always So Bad
05/11/2004 03:16 PM
While the entertainment industry continues to stick by its hardline stance that any kind of copying or file sharing is bad and harms sales, they can't be thrilled that Quentin Tarantino stood up at an "anti-piracy conference" and told everyone that copying movies isn't all bad. In fact, he admits that he bought a bunch of bootleg movies that were hard to find in order to recreate certain scenes for his latest movie, Kill Bill. On top of that, he says he's happy that Kill Bill is being pirated in China since there's no other way for people to see it there. Just like in the music industry, it appears that those people who the RIAA and MPAA claim they're trying to "protect" realize the issue is a bit more complicated than the world is being told.

Microsoft Admits Plans For Music

Microsoft Admits Plans For Music
Download Service
11/17/2003 11:10 PM
Well, this should be a surprise to absolutely no one, but Microsoft has now officially confirmed their plans to offer a me-too music download service as part of their MSN properties. I'm almost surprised it's getting any news coverage at all - but when you mention Microsoft you get press. The thing that's interesting to me is that very few people are asking questions about how these hundred or so music download services are going to fit together. If I buy a CD from Tower Records, it's the same CD that I buy from a little independent music shop down the street or that I order online from Amazon. That's not the case with all these download stores. Each one has different formats and different restrictions - making the whole space one big mess. Why should I bother wading in when I have no idea if the music I buy will actually be useful to me in a year?

Law to make iTunes compatible with
Microsoft?
04/07/2005 05:57 PM
US legislators are debating whether to force Apple's products to interoperate with Microsoft's. The Congress have been considering a plan that would outlaw music protected by proprietary digital rights management (DRM) technology, such as Apple's FairPlay, which stops iTunes downloads being played on Microsoft digital music players and vice versa.

However, yesterday's Congressional subcommittee hearing on 'Digital Music Interoperability and Availability', which included debate on mandating interoperability for digital music, received a 'hands off' message from industry representatives. William Pence, Napster CTO, told the subcommittee that the music industry will eventually promote interoperability itself without the need for government intervention.

Today, Microsoft rolls out its MSN Music store, directly challenging its nemesis, Apple Computer, which so far has ruled that business. I’ve been testing Microsoft’s new store in advance of today’s launch and comparing it with Apple’s much-praised iTunes music store. While the Microsoft entry has a few nice touches, it is typical of many…
